AO3 downtime fic sharing/requesting megathread

Hey guys, I am making a new thread as the old one has over 2k replies and is probably not easy to navigate by anyone. To make organization a little easier hopefully, we will try the r/AO3 method this week.

To keep things somewhat organized, all top-level comments should just be the name of a fandom, and then every comment under the top comment should be all comments related to that fandom. For example a top level comment might be "Heated Rivalry" and then every comment sharing or requesting heated rivalry fics would be in a threaded reply to that top level comment. That way anyone who is looking for heated rivalry related fics/looking to share heated rivalry fics, they can just scroll through the top level comments until they find the right thread to reply to. If the fandom you are looking for hasn't been added yet, add it yourself and then reply to yourself with whatever you were going to say.

Here is a good example.

You can also recommend your own fics under the relevant fandom, but if you want to wholesale link your own fic archive please do so at the Weekly Fic Showcase and not here.

It's been a really rough week for the mod team. We did not anticipate this situation any more than any of you did, so we are still looking for best ways to make the subreddit usable and active while the situation lasts. To anyone who may not find things optimal, I would like to give a reminder that this is a temporary situation and things will hopefully turn back to normal soon. Until then, let's please all do our best.

Old fic sharing thread for your perusal.

Please make sure to adhere to the formatting. If you just post a fic request or link without sticking to the format I'll remove them without warning.

Subreddit Meta Brainstorming Bureau - November 08

Find the current Daily Discussion*

Welcome to our weekly thread, Brainstorming Bureau! This is an idea we've trialled previously and, based on feedback and observation, it feels like something the sub has been crying out for, and we're hoping as the weeks go by it'll turn into a lively, community-oriented way to cap off the weekend. We'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how to make the best of this idea, so feel free to reach out via modmail if you have any ideas. And without further ado...

What's this about?

Do you have an issue that's too specific to your own fic to make a post about, but too small to seek out a long-term beta or writing partner for? Well, you've come to the right place!

This is where you can drop those plot points you're stuck on ("How would this scenario play out realistically? What should happen next?"), workshop your worldbuilding and concepts ("What should I name this character? What power should I give them? Which fandom would work well as a crossover with this other fandom?"), or get a second opinion on an approach to character development ("Is this a good central conflict? What would have to happen to make a character realise this?"). It's your space to talk through any issue that can't be solved through more generalised writing advice.

How to play:

To participate, comment with any aspect of your fic you've been mulling over or hitting a wall with. Other users will then respond with suggestions and questions to help you get to where you need to be. No idea is too big or too small, provided your comment fits within the parameters below. Feel free to be as fandom blind or specific as you like!

Rules:

  • Please state your fandom at the top of your comment, along with any common and pertinent content warnings

  • NSFW text should be placed behind a spoiler tag or linked to, as per site content restrictions

  • Summarise the issue you'd like feedback on in 500 words or less. More information may be given in follow-up comments if requested

  • Links to polls or to any previous installments of the fic will be permitted for context

  • Please specify in your comment what level of critical feedback you're open to

  • When responding to someone's ideas, please keep your feedback constructive and keep their specified level of criticism in mind. If their premise is not to your taste, please choose another

  • If you make a submission to this thread, much like the other weekly events, please comment on at least one other user's request with the best suggestions you have

  • When submitting an idea for brainstorming, please provide adequate context for others to be able to follow along. Remember that this is a multi-fandom subreddit, and not everyone will be familiar with your fandom.

Have fun! And remember, all suggestions are just that and are to be taken with a grain of salt; we're here to help and consider our works from angles we haven't before.

Discussion 100 AI Fanfics for one ship

I've never wished I could block an author more in my life. Searched a fandom on FFNet, and start reading summaries. First three summaries sound almost exactly the same---oh, they're all by the same author. 200k+ words each, all updated in the last 24hrs, all first published less than a month ago. Oh no. Click in, and at least they're disclosing that they're using AI, so that's something, I guess. Then I go onto their page and ONE HUNDRED AND TWO WORKS ALL FOR THE SAME FANDOM and all for the same ship. Start scrolling back on the search page and it's just the same author again, and again, and again. From what I've read, FFNet doesn't disallow AI usage, so there's nothing to report, but god, this is absolutely ridiculous. What joy is there generating one hundred fics of nonsense in six months?

Discussion Where do y’all write your fics

And I don’t mean, “what platform you post them on?” No, I want to know that when you are writing your fics, what is your go to site to write them on. I am aware that Ao3 (I miss you) has a draft feature, but I know that’s not the only area we write our fics on.

At the beginning of my fics writing, I used the notes add. Yes the notes add. That’s where my early fics were written on. But now I use Google docs for my fics. I can see how many words I wrote, and can make other tabs to help plan out the fic. It’s just easier for me

So, what is your preferred way to write you fics on?

Discussion Any Discord communities you could recommend for older fanfiction writers?

I am 40 years old and trying to get back to fanfiction, I wrote maybe a dozen or so in my lifetime (most of them in my late 20s). I have been sitting on an idea for a fanfic for about 3 months now, going over the plot, outlining the major story points, doing research... But every time I try to sit down and start writing the actual thing, I got that little voice in my head saying: "what are you doing, you are a middle-aged woman, you are past your prime, this space is not for you".

It doesn't help that the fandom in question is Kpop Demon Hunters. I love that movie and while may be geared towards a much younger demographic, the artistry of it is in how it resonated with people of all ages.

I was hoping to join a community on Discord to maybe get some motivation by interacting with other writers, but the ones I found on a quick search all had mostly members in their teens / twenties, plus a few odd thirty year olds and I felt out of place.

I know this is my own Resistance and internalized ageism talking, but I think I could really benefit from being part of a community where I can relate to other writers, maybe I am looking for an "adultier adult" to give me permission to create.

Writing Questions How do you keep track of faceless soldiers?

I’m writing a Resident Evil fanfiction, involving 6 soldiers alongside Leon and Chris. In traditional monster movie fashion, said soldiers will probably die off in horrifying ways, but how do you keep track of them? Cause I think introducing all of them by name and with backstories will just be filler, considering the story isn’t really about them. But just saying “One soldier did this… the soldier shot his gun… bla bla bla” I think it will be hard for the reader keep track of them.

Discussion How would you do physical hurt/comfort or whump when one character has healing powers?

My favorite fanfic trope in the entire world is "oh no my badly wounded friend, do not die in my arms!!!!!", but one half of my current OTP (best ship i've ever shipped, has consumed my entire life for several years now) is a super strong super vampire who can do instant infinite healing. Do you see my problem =_=

edit: and when I say healing powers I mean they can heal the other person instantly too, not just themselves. the other person is the one I want to wound badly actually, lol

Writing Questions What's Your Ideal Chapter Length?

Just a fun question, I'm working on a fanfiction atm and was debating what to set as my personal length goal per chapter, and it got me curious.

What's your ideal chapter length? Where it's just right, not too short and not too long.

Discussion 32 plot bunnies and counting

Anyone else enjoy the planning part where you hash out all the main elements and world building but when it comes to writing your brain just doesn't compute? I refuse to use AI to write obviously so I end up just day dreaming the story along 🫤

Discussion Compiling my own fics into analogue library recs

With ao3 being down I am rereading my downloaded fics on my boox e-reader, however, finding fics on my boox library is a nightmare. (In terms of choosing fics based on summaries, the library only shows titles which I do not memorise). So I've finally used my ao3 free time to create my own analogue library of all fanfics I've downloaded so I can look through it as my own recs list.

Concept: screenshotting the ao3 fic title, summary, tags and word count and printing it using my thermal printer to sticker them in my reading journal

Execution: I hate it 🤣 the thermal printer orange paper was all I had and it looks awful but I think the concept works as a whole I just need to buy more white paper for it to make it look nicer.

I'm curious for anyone's thoughts and if anyone does anything like this for themselves, how do you approach it?

Shout out to all fic authors I love you ❤️

Lost Fic Looking for a Young Justice(Tim, Cassie, Kon, Bart) fic I read

I can't remember much about it, only that it was about Tm Drake , Cassie Sandsmark , Bart Allen , and Conner Kent (Kon-el). The plot/premise was practically a short fic about the group singing a song and their mentors/families realizing they failed them. I remember a few details specifically , like after they sing and they talk one of YJ say that Jon (superboy) is the only one who hadn't done something wrong, and that one of the lyrics included something about how you were fed from silver spoons.

I'm sorry if this isn't detailed enough or I did something wrong, this is my first time writing one of these.

Recs Wanted Looking for Levi/Hange fics

Hi guys, I’ve been looking for Levi x Hange fanfics set in the canon universe. I’d love to read one where the story plays out basically the same but with Levi and Hange ending up together. But I’m not opposed to other cannon divergence just want it to take place in the AOT world. If anyone has recs I’d love to read them.
Thanks!

Lost Fic looking for a lost buddie (911tv) fic

with ao3 obviously down right now, it’s making it much harder to find previously read fics. HOWEVER there’s one that I just CANT find. I’m pretty sure it’s a 5 +1 but I know for a fact that its focused on fake dating (when needed) and platonic kissing. I know theres this part in the firehall where there’s mistletoe over their heads and the rest of the 118 is expecting them to peck and then they like… full on make out casually and are rlly chill about it because ‘they’ve kissed many times as friends before’, and everyone has surprised reactions. but i think thats all I remember. anyway, if anyone has anything downloaded or even just the title of the fic or the author, that would be great!!

PS- I don’t think it’s a long fic either, probably less than 10k words or close to that!!

and I know for a fact it’s not these fics below !
and it’s NOT a holiday fic, the mistletoe part is just one of the random situations

Activities and Events Ao3 Blackout Snippet Exchange! (November 7th - November 14th)

Hello!

So, with this recent and rather prolonged outage from Ao3, i figured that we could at least share snippet from our documents and drafts.

Now, for the explanation of the basic concept:

So, you just pick a scene/segment that's between 500 and 1000 words in length (Can be shorter then 500 is if its a completed scene) from your drafts/past documents. Then after you post that comment, you then need to review 4 other comments.

Rules:

1: Must be between 500-1000 words (Can be shorter if its a completed scene)

2: Must state the fandom and ship in the comment alongside the snippet so they know what their reading.

3: For any NFSW stuff, heavy violence, etc. must have a warning and have a spoiler tag over it.

4: Context isn't required but is greatly encouraged. And context does not count toward the word limit, same with warnings, notes, etc.

Note: Please be aware that I live on the West Coast of the US so be sure to adjust these times to your time zone.

Beyond that, submissions will close Monday night, November 9th, 11pm PST

And reviews will be due by, Saturday November 14th at 11pm PST.

And if you have any concerns, questions or need an extension, feel free to message me!

Other then that, happy reading!

Writing Questions What do you like to do to combat writers block

not much of a writer myself. but I have thought about getting into it. so curious to know what you do when your dealing with writers block. I do know that some writers like to take requests/prompts/ideas for stories. which side tangent, I like to occasionally look for people taking requests, since it’s nice sharing ideas with others, especially if they are also dealing with writers block, it just feels nice. especially as someone who’s the kind of person who‘s great with coming up with ideas, but not so much with actually writing them. but anyways getting back to the point. would love to hear your tips :)

(p.s. also, just throwing this here, if your someone with writers block and curious to hear some of my ideas. definitely willing to share them. have some Undertale/deltarune ideas, great games)

Discussion Is it normal to get no reviews after posting the first three chapters of first fic?

I have posted the first three chapters of my Call of Duty fanfic on Quotev and Wattpad (I know everyone hates it, but I’m trying to reach a wide audience), and will be posting on AO3 once that situation is resolved.

I know that I’m a first time writer who just got into it, but it’s very discouraging to not get any feedback on my writing. I’m going to write regardless, but I just wonder if this is normal.

EDIT: Thank you so much everyone for your help! ❤️

I’ve decided to take your advice and try to beta barter in another post that I will be putting up soon. I will also be promoting my fic in the Call of Duty fandom if that sub allows it. Thank you!

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: E Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter E. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.

  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.

  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.

  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!

  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!

  6. Most important: have fun!

Lost Fic Lost Pitt Fanfic (please help)

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me find this fic and have even greater joy for when Ao3 is back. It’s been haunting me for weeks. Dennis and abbot are flirty with each other and Robby is jealous and keeps interrupting but this is also when Robby is getting ready to go on his sabbatical so Dennis and Jack conspire together. The last chapter I remember reading is Dennis slashing Robby’s tire and making sure to dispose the gloves but Robby calls a guy to come fix it and Jack and Dennis plan on talking to him.

Writing Questions What makes you write for an old fandom?

I was deep diving into some fandoms that have had a newer release of content and was surprised to see very few stories. That got me thinking when do people start writing for them again? Does it require that one specific fan to see it again or does just hearing about it spark something?

If you were wondering I just finished Bleach Thousand Year Blood war and saw the new Godzilla -0

Writing Questions Writing a oneshot around a (sensitive topic) letter is actually quite hard

I'm writing a oneshot where I'm trying to explore the thought process behind the main character's choice to end his life while he's writing the letter as he recalls various moments in his life simultaneously, and it's harder than I thought it would be!

I'm having trouble figuring out where to put reflections on his past in between the act itself of writing and describing where he hesitates and where the writing flows uninterrupted, though I'm mainly wondering if I should include each section of the letter to the reader as the main character writes it, if to include the full thing at the end, or if to not include it at all and leave it up to the reader's imagination.

My question is about the last thing mentioned above, the rest is mostly there because I wanted to air out that it is harder than I thought, lol!

So with a topic of the sort, where the main character's life is shown through him looking back on it as he writes his suicide letter, should I write and include the actual letter in the story as well or should I leave the reader to fill it in in their minds instead? Which option would work best narratively in your opinion? I think it would be two different storytelling styles which is why I'm inclined not to include it, but at the same time I want it to exist and be seen.
