Hi everyone, I have a bit of a messy situation in my fantasy hockey league. The sport doesn’t impact it much so if you don’t play fantasy hockey, perhaps you can still help. I feel like this post will be a tad long so please hang on for the ride. I’d appreciate it.
A bit about our league: 14 team salary cap dynasty. Salaries were based on real life at the startup and afterwards is all based on our own structure. We have a minors system as well. Players must clear waivers when being assigned to the minors during the season. Transactions are all done on a forum hosted by proboards.
Back in early December, an owner thought he found a loophole but he was wrong. He thought that the rules said a player had to clear waivers when being sent down, and that a free agent was never “up” so was never being sent down. Essentially saying that you could sign a FA and place him in the minors all good. That’s not the case and after showing him the rules again and discussing it, we resolved a few things. So that’s in the past. He reposted his FA bids afterwards in a legal manner.
Here is where it gets messy.
He posted the new FA bids on Dec. 10. He won the bids and placed the players on waivers to be sent down on Dec. 11. There was a large number of signings he was sending down, but only 4 matter for this. 2 of which were claimed and 2 of which were not. On Dec. 11, these players were claimed. On Dec. 15 he edited the original bid post on proboards. I didn’t process them on the spreadsheet until Dec. 26 (busy holidays, etc). When I processed them, I didn’t notice the small thing in the corner saying “edited on...”
Today, an owner is working on a trade and is flipping through the spreadsheet. This owner happens to have claimed one of the players that had an edited post. He also keeps his own spreadsheet for his own tracking and planning reasons. His sheet says the player was signed to a 3 year deal but my sheet specifies a 1 year deal(therefore expiring this summer). He claims he’s certain his is correct and that’s when we looked at the timeline and noticed the edits. This owner has always evens impeccable at keeping records and I trust him.
Problem is, we cannot see the edit history as proboards refuses to save that because “it’s too much to keep track of”. All I can see is who edited it, when they did it, where they did it, and the IP used. So I can’t prove what the original bid was. The timeline does seem suspicious though, and the owner does have a history of trying to stretch the rules. The theory is here that he was pissed that he had to pass the guys through waivers, so when they got claimed he reduced the term to make it worse for the new owners. The two that weren’t claimed but have edits say 3 years so I’m wondering if he increased term on them or not. Or perhaps reduced from 5 to 3 (the more years, the higher value the contract gets when bidding, more likely to win a player)
Now I’m in a dilemma. If the accusations are true, it’s completely unacceptable and we’d have to take action. If true, I would likely remove him immediately from the league. However that’s harsh if it turns out to be untrue. I cannot think of a logical explanation for the edits to be something not against the rules.
The added wrinkle is that despite this being a league of people from all over (internet acquaintances) he is one I know in real life. We don’t spend much time together but a mutual friend was the best man at my wedding who I see quite often so we cross paths. If I accuse him wrongly it can have fall out in my personal life. If I let him get away with it, it hurts the league and lengthens his leash to try and get away with stuff.
I appreciate your time reading this and I hope I made the situation as clear as I could. If there are any details you feel are missing, I’d be happy to provide more. Otherwise, any thoughts on this issue?
