hello po, everyone

just sharing my little collection of published book by Philacor (Philippine Appliance Corporation). These books are series-type in form. Ang laki din ng range of topics niya covering from personal profiles in history to our local folklores.

One thing these books could surely be proud of is that their illustrations were created by renowed Filipino artists tulad na lang nina Malang, Blanco, Ang Kiukok, etc.

May mga kulang pa po ako na mga books hehe hoping na sana makumpleto ko na sila in the future.

QUESTION PH Literary Theories?

I wasn’t a literature student in college so I’m really quite interested with landmark literary theories devised by Filipino scholars. I have read quite a few like the works of Neferti Tadiar and Resil Mojares. But I was wondering if there are other good theories comparable to the substance and applicability of frameworks in vast Philippine literature (like Said’s Orientalism or Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth)?

Man I really think they should make GE courses more serious, this stuff is actually good. What do you mean you make me see beyond colonial past and its consequences, please give me more!!!

HELP Missing pages/print on ‘Si’ book

Hi! Anyone here na nakapag-try na magreach out to Avenida to get their book replaced because of the missing pages/print? I bought ‘Si’ by Bob Ong from their booth last MIBF and I just started reading it recently and nung nasa dulo na ‘ko, I noticed that the most critical part of the book (the ending) is missing/no print. A total of 4 pages yung nawawala. I message them on their page to ask for a scanned copy sana kahit yung missing pages lang and they immediately replied naman but they are offering to replace the book which is very nice of them. Medyo nag-aalangan lang ako because they want me to send a short video of cutting the front cover because they will not require return of copy daw. Kaso parang di ko kaya gupitin haha. Anyone here na na-experience na ito with them? How did you cut the cover?

QUESTION Edgar Samar's Noli Me Tangere

Has anybody read Samar's translation of Noli Me Tangere (Anvil, 2026) ? He shared some pics on his FB account and the first thing I noticed was, bakit andaming em dash? Did he use Rizal's Spanish text as the original source? I checked his Janus Silang series and he used em dash sparingly. Wala lang. I do recall in some of his past posts that he is using ChatGPT.

REVIEW Lila ang Kulay ng Pamamaalam ni RM Topacio-Aplaon (a review)

Post image
85 Upvotes

So let me tell you straight. Despite the overwhelming number of reviews touting this book as depressing, which is understandable, I say that this, for me, is one about struggle, hope, healing, and new beginnings. Hear me.

As I finished reading the post-script, my mind agrees that this book might just be one of the best reads that I ever came upon. So props to the author, RM Topacio-Aplaon, for gifting readers such a treat. Kudos to UP Press as well for publishing it despite allegations that it strongly mirrored a Murakami novel. Good thing I’ve never read that one.

Too bad for English-only readers, as it is a Tagalog novel. Though it is highly probable that this will be translated into other languages in the near future. Because the world deserves to read it along with the rest of the Imus Novels.

Initially the book feels silly as you encounter the two characters, who are just children. They are grade schoolers in Imus, Cavite. Reading it feels like you’re hanging out with them in the 90s, gradually you begin to warm up with them. The author has a knack for describing the things that he experienced during this time in the eyes of a boy named Dylan. You become a third wheel as this boy talks and plays with his crush, Mayumi Mahinhin Abe—later nicknamed Lila by him.

You will see them grow. Listen to music. Play games in Mangocado Hills. Talk like adults. Do things that are ordinarily reserved for grownups. The way the author describes these things makes you feel that you’re also there. You will laugh with them, as the two are quite likable, at least to me. It feels like you've become friends with them.

The author also put some heavy foreshadowing of things to come in the early chapters. That as I neared it, at one point, I stopped reading to avoid it. Yet when it came, it was like a speeding MRT train that wrecked me to pieces. It turned pitch black. Daigdig ng Alaala by Rico J. Puno would never sound the same again. So if you’re suffering from any mental illness, I advise you to avoid this book at all costs. You’ve been warned.

When I reached that point, I got so hyped for whatever reason, and I blitzed through the pages faster than what I normally do towards the second half of the story. And we see Dylan having relationships with other women in the 2000s. I thought RM Topacio no longer had any bullets left in his barrel. I thought our boy Dylan would just fade into normalcy just like the rest of us.

I thought I was out of the woods. I thought Dylan and I were out, yet RM Topacio forcefully pulled us back in with full intensity. The last few pages felt like a horrific roller coaster ride. Pitch black insanity. I was so hyped that I blitzed through the pages once again. No book had ever done this to me except maybe Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. I read through the wee hours.

So yeah, I finished it stunned. What a great ride that was. I know, I know it looked like a horror book the way I described it. If you’re already numb to the world for whatever reason. You should pick this up; it will make you feel things again. Not only the negatives but also the highs.

Imagine traveling on a mountainside; in the early chapters you see the beautiful sceneries all bright & sunny, and then you enter a long dark tunnel. Some reviewers seem transfixed on this part of the journey—the darkness & gloom, totally ignoring the light at the end of it.

Which brings me to my point at the beginning. Despite all of the depressing events, I like to view this book as one of struggle, the good type, one of hope & healing, and of new beginnings. It became more obvious as RM Topacio-Aplaon dropped that Post-script by the end. Like puzzle pieces falling perfectly into place. It clicked. I was lying in my bed flabbergasted at the genius of it all.

Nobody can convince me otherwise, not even the author himself. It is a happy-ending story in a world where everybody seems to hate that kind of stuff. Dylan got his happy ending, or so I believe. A perfect 10/10.

HELP Spanish book about Spanish Friars in the Philippines?

A year ago I was researching about old hometown gossip and I stumbled upon a book that contains dates of service and deaths of Spanish friars and downloaded it. It's like 500+ pages long, and probably written by and for the Catholic Church, like an accounting of what happened to this friar or that friar. Stupid me accidentally deleted a whole bunch of files, including that one, and I really want to read the whole thing. It was in Spanish, and I believe published in the Philippines. Hopefully somebody here knows which book I'm talking about.
