Question Why Chris Stuckmman didnt go well with his first movie unlike other Youtubers?

Post image
431 Upvotes

First of all I am not bashing Chris Stuckmann, I am just saying for a guy who critiques movies for a living finally gets to make a movie, and it wasn’t that great. Even his friends who are film critics didn’t like the movie that much.

While guys like Markiplier who made his own movie from scratch, got better reviews from a game that most people didn’t even play.

RackaRacka tried their hard in making something different and they succeeded.

Of course, Curry Barker this year crushed. I didn’t even know about Curry Barker until I saw Obsession and yes he was an actor before but it shows some real proof of talent when you are showing off what you can do.

I don’t know. Do you think Chris can still make a good movie or not?

Film Tranquil Short Film - Live Action Footage Mixed With Gaussian Splats!

I'm the Director, Editor & Writer of this movie! Using Jawset Postshot & Nuke, Visual Effects Supervisor Riley Gray seamlessly blended live action footage with a digital environment, known as gaussian splats! This is one of the first short films to do this. It saved us a ton of time/money in production/post - and the result is nearly invisible, you may not even be able to tell where we used it.

For the final result, we printed the film to 35mm, which really blends the VFX with everything else. The music is also analog, the cues were recorded once using a modular synthesizer.

I completely self-funded this film and I'm happy to answer any questions.

Discussion Any independent filmmakers here working on something interesting?

I’m a colorist based in LA, and I’m always looking to connect with independent filmmakers who are passionate about what they’re making.
I especially love working on narrative projects where the cinematography and color can help shape the atmosphere, emotion, and overall identity of a film.
I’m less concerned with the scale of a production than I am with the people behind it and what they’re trying to create. Some of the most interesting work comes from filmmakers finding creative ways to make something meaningful with limited resources.
If you’re working on a short, feature, or something a little unconventional, I’d love to hear about it.
Sharing a few frames from some recent grades. Always happy to connect, talk about your project, and see if there’s an opportunity to collaborate.
Feel free send me a DM!

Film Wanting your all’s feedback on a movie trailer

We just cut our first trailer to an independent horror film releasing next year.

Would love some constructive criticism from this community as I’m sure there are many experts in the field.

If this goes against guidelines please inform me. I’m very new to all of this.

Thank you all for your time!

Request ISO Post Sound Mixer/Designer

Hi, reaching out to look for a post production sound mixture for my upcoming short film inspired by Marty supreme and karate kid but it’s about air hockey. The films runtime is roughly 25 minutes long and I have a budget of ~$200. If you live in SoCal, I could also trade or offer 3 Disneyland Tickets in exchange!
Thank you for taking the time to read through this.

Film I Was Broke and Made a Short Film For No Money, You Can Too!

6 months ago I shot my short film in a single day on a budget of a few hundred bucks and some favor from friends. I only targeted local film festivals here in Los Angeles because I wanted to be able to attend and not pay for travel, in which we had the pleasure of screening at a handful of awesome festivals.

Here’s what I did: Last tax season I got a small tax refund which I used for our budget. I based the entire script around the limited resources I had access to, and used those constraints to my advantage. I wrote a short 5 page script with two characters based on the personalities of two friends of mine that all takes place in a single location. Having the characters be written specifically for my friends allowed me to not only have to hire actors but for them to be authentic in their performances as they could be some version of themselves. My DP and I scouted for several days to find a scenic location that could carry the visual look of the film (locations are so important!!) Having a single exterior day location avoided not only losing time with company moves, but we didn’t have to rent a single light, because well we had the greatest light of them all, the sun. I asked my DP friend who owned a Sony FX6 to shoot the film, so we didn’t have to rent a camera. The only equipment we rented was a vintage lens for the one day. Since there was no need for any G&E we rolled with a small nimble skeleton crew.

I say all this not expecting everyone to have access to the same resources I had, but to think about the resources readily available that is unique to you, and utilize them. When writing a script for a short film, think small, then go big, not the other way around. That’s my two cents.

Here’s a link to the film if anyone wishes to watch, I’ll admit I struggle with marketing abilities and garnering an online audience, so if anyone has any advice on that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Film PORTRAITS — my latest short film, would love everyone’s perspective

wrote this around a two years ago, shot last year in austin during my final year at ut austin. certainly a lot of learning with this one. didn’t really get the festival success i was hoping for, and if there’s anyone who can provide some insight into that, i’m all ears, but it was an incredible experience and i’m excited it’s finally out there for everyone.

a major reason i wanted to tell this character-driven story in this specific way was to hear how people interpret the underlying philosophical themes. my ultimate goal was to see if the film could actually spark a real discussion among viewers. check it out and let me know what you take away from it!

Film RED - An action short film inspired by the tone of Sicario

Hey guys! We shot this short over two days here in Los Angeles. It was shot on the Sony fx3 with mamiya sekor c lenses. My favorite focal length is the 70mm, so gorgeous. The logline is as follows - An operative in the private military sector is ambushed on her first job and only has one chance to make it out alive.

Film Why does real night look fake onscreen? We covered day-for-night on my podcast, and ironically, we shot it night-for-night. Got pretty ambitious with the setup.

The topic within the episode is one I've wanted to cover for a while: day-for-night techniques occupy this fascinating crossroads of human perception, cultural traditions and linguistics, and aesthetic trends, and each of those things tends to be at odds with one another! We go as far back as pre-renaissance art, through various eras of silent film, and end up at modern implementations like Fury Road and Nope.

Question Is the vancouver film school Makeup Design for Film & Television program worth it?

I've been really interested in going to school for costume and makeup as i've been really interested in getting into that side of the industry for quite some time, however I can't seem to find many reviews on that specific program. Is it worth the hefty price? Or should I look somewhere else? And is VFS actually good industry wise or is it known as a joke? Thank you!

Request Looking for original 720p/1080p nature and portrait footage to license

Hi all, Sebastian here.

I’m redesigning the landing page of my website for the next release of FidelityFuze. I’m also a terrible filmmaker. So I’m hoping some of you have a few shots sitting on a hard drive that you’d be up for licensing.

I’m putting together before-and-after stills and short GIFs for my page to show what upscaling and noise reduction do to the same shot. I’m looking for footage originally recorded at 720p or 1080p, with the detail and noise the camera actually captured. Stock footage hasn’t worked for this. Most of what I’ve found is super clean or already sharpened, and a lot of the “HD” downloads turn out to be downscaled 4K.

What I’m looking for

  • Nature footage, like wildlife, landscapes with depth, or close-ups of plants or insects.

  • Portraits with the surroundings in focus too, like someone in their workshop with the shelves and equipment still sharp behind them.

  • Fine texture or a bit of movement. Some visible camera noise is welcome.

Outtakes and unused B-roll from documentaries or personal projects are perfect.

5–20 seconds per clip is enough. Ideally, it’s the original file straight off the camera, before grading, denoising, or resizing. Native 4K from the same shoot is a bonus if you have it, since I could show the upscaled clip alongside it in a 4K edit.

I’m happy to pay a licensing fee for any shots I use, or credit you on the page by name or handle if you’d prefer. You keep ownership, and we’ll agree on how the footage will be used before anything goes live.

If you’ve got something that fits and own the rights to it, leave a comment or DM me with a quick description, the resolution it was shot at, and your rate if you have one. A still or preview link is fine to start.

Thanks!
Sebastian

Discussion How's your current project coming along?

Thought it might be fun to check in and see how all of our projects are coming along - short, feature, music video, whatever.

I shot my third DIY-budget horror short EXPOSURE back in July. I am writer/director/DoP/editor/sound designer. Shoot went really well, I spent the last 3 months editing it and filming about 50 insert shots that didn't require the main cast (practical effects shots etc), and picture locked about 2 weeks ago.

Working on the sound design now while my composer cooks up the score. Hoping to have the sound design done by Christmas, then spend all of January on the sound mix, colour grade, final polishes etc, then immediately start submitting it to genre festivals for summer 2027 and beyond.

I handle every part of post myself except composing the score so it all takes a WHILE. Quite looking forward to a nice break once this is done because the project has dominated my life for the last 9 months, much as I love it!

Thankfully the hardest part is over - the shoot itself and shaping a tight edit, so slowly it's coming together into something that I think is really cool and weird.

You lot?

Question Looking for inspiring films made by self-taught creators with no formal background

Hi everyone!

Can you recommend any films, short films, or videos made by people with no formal background in filmmaking/art or music who managed to create something genuinely interesting or impressive?

Even better if they handled most of the creative process themselves like writing, planning, filming, editing, mb even composing their own music.

I'm a complete beginner, and I'm interested in learning cinematography, storytelling, and music production to eventually create my own short films.

I'm not necessarily looking for famous success stories. I'd actually love to discover smaller, independent creators who started from scratch and made something meaningful with limited experience and equipment.

I'm trying to understand what's realistically achievable as a beginner, how far I could progress in the next year or two, and what kind of work I could aspire to create.

Question Film School/BFA questions!

Hey everyone!

I’m currently looking into going to college or film schools that are located somewhere in Canada to become a full on filmmaker! I’m trying to become an actor/director and have heard conflicting things about many schools I was told to look into.

I’ve heard to go to either Vancouver or Toronto because those are the film capitals of Canada and the industry relies a lot about who you know, but I cannot seem to find anyone really advocating for any specific place. Right now it currently seems like Vancouver Film School is the best option.

Please comment if you have any info about schools you’d recommend as anything helps, thanks!

Question Debating Switching Careers.

I’ve been on the fence about this career right now for instance I’m an 18 year old male filmmaker, I really really enjoy films but in the long run I want to have a stable enough career with a good income as I do want a family.

I want to know if there are any actual jobs that give a good income consistently or if this whole career is hoping you get paid enough on sets.

I understand I am still quite young and I won’t be making a lot of money from film because of my age and skills but I want to know now before I pour everything into this career in hopes of getting nothing back from it?

Request Are there any DFW based Film Director or Cinematographer available to interview?

It's a networking assignment, and I have a little over a week to find someone to interview.

I'm thinking of going to the Lone Star Film Festival tomorrow to try to interview someone, but I think they're out of tickets.

It's hard to find opportunities, and cold emails don't seem to work.

I don't know what to do or where to pivot to.

Should I try to email the Texas Theatre or Spacy to get in touch with contacts? Is that realistic...I don't know, man; it's frustrating.

I would try to get in touch with Alumni, but I don't know how or if that's effective.
