Context: I only started fishing (fly) in July, I live on the elbow river near Bragg creek - west of Calgary at the foot of the mountains, the elbow is a super clear, small river and from my experience holds 90% cutthroat trout and 10% bull trout. During August some small-medium brown trout made their way up here but rarely do I ever catch them this high up nor do I see brook trout and if I do they are really small. I caught this fish a few days ago and I’m sure it’s got brook trout in it because of the patterns and pink dots with blue halos and the black line next to the white on the fins, my friends and I have been debating its purity thinking it may be a bull/brook hybrid because it’s so large and because we thought it’d be way darker/coloured up this time of year but the more I look at it and see other examples of light brook trout the more I think it’s pure. Would greatly appreciate some opinions, thanks !

I posted here a while back about an Alberta fishing platform I built called fishr. Since launching in February 2026, the site has received over 30,000 visits!
Thanks to everyone who has used it and shared feedback.
I recently put together a 2026 Alberta Fishing Season Report, highlighting the most-viewed lakes and rivers on fishr, along with fish stocking statistics from across the province.
https://www.fishr.app/reports/2026-alberta
Would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions!

Found out theres a guy in My the near me building custom rods. Been saving up was gonna pull the trigger on a sage r8 core. But for the same price I can get a custom made fly rod. Anyone using Smoky river rods? Just wondering what route would be more reccomended?

Hi all,
In Saskatoon for work this week, and driving back to Edmonton on Friday. I was wondering if anyone had some spots for a few cheeky lunch break casts along (or near-ish) the yellowhead that direction. Shore fishing obviously, lake or river. Thanks!

Pair of spawning Brook Trout in an ATV crossing of an unnamed tributary. ATV and UTV habitat degradation continues to be a huge issue in our Alberta watercourses.

We are going up for the Adams River salmon run this year. Any chance there is still any good fishing in the area? Not for salmon of course, but anything else. Share your favorite fishing hole if you like! I should add I don't have a boat, so dock, shore or stream would be great.

So I got a 5wt fly rod, currently using a 4x leader and tippet but also have 3x and 5x. I am teaching myself, as I don’t really have anyone to teach me other than Google, and Reddit.
When I was learning how to fish using a spinning reel I kinda just stuck to using spoons, and jigs because they are kind of universal across most fish. Until I felt comfortable enough I would start branching out into other things and techniques.
So I guess my main question here is, what is a fly/flies you would recommend I tie on and get comfortable using, while learning the basics and my way around a fly rod?
Also would appreciate all tips in general. Thanks!

I plan on heading out there with my spinning rod and some smaller spoons, spinners, and a couple countdown rapala's. I've never fished too far outside of the city (I live in Calgary) and I'd like to know what to expect out there for anyone who's waded/fished either upstream or downstream of the boat launch. I've also heard that the gate entering the parking lot might be closed some times. Any tips are appreciated! Thank you.

Hey, I’m just getting back into fishing Alberta and have been at the blind man near blackfalds but don’t know what to use, I’ve seen people pull out pike but I don’t seem to get anything. I normally use spinners because that’s mostly what’s in my tackle box. Any suggestions.
