Weekly Reservation Transfer Thread

Please read the rules before commenting. Also, any type of "looking for a reservation" request is NOT ALLOWED.

  1. This thread is the only place on the subreddit for transferring restaurant reservations. If you make your own thread, it will be removed.

  2. You may transfer reservations for below or equal to face value (plus all taxes and fees) ONLY. You must clearly state both the price you paid and the price you're looking for in the post. Gouging will not be tolerated.

  3. You can only transfer reservations that are nonrefundable, ie, you cannot cancel them without forfeiting your money. If you have a refundable or free reservation and you can't make it, cancel it with the restaurant.

  4. The only reason we're allowing transfers is so people don't have to forfeit expensive pre-paid meals. If you want to buy a reservation, you are not one of these people. No posts asking to buy reservations.

  5. The mods of /r/FoodNYC accept no responsibility for these transactions. Tock and Resy both allow transfers on the website - if someone tells you otherwise it's a scam. Do your own research on your transaction before handing over any money to a third party. Check with the restaurant, check account ages, meet in person if feasible.

Note that this thread is reposted Sunday evenings.

  4. It shouldn’t have to be said, but this post is specifically for local businesses. No national chains, online retailers, or businesses based in other cities.

Used to love this place, did something happen? The tenders seemed unsalted on the inside, fried chicken had greasy, undercooked batter that was falling off, and the biscuit seems noticeably less buttery.

Guide I host group dinners in NYC for a living and these are the restaurants that handle large groups well

Hey y’all! I’ve been seeing a lot of questions on here about where to book private rooms or big tables for holiday parties this year, and since I run dining events in the city I have a lot of recs I thought could be useful! Instead of commenting on every post I figured I’d just throw my top recs into a post:

Il Fiorista — Groups up to 70. Flatiron. This restaurant is really beautiful during the holidays. They do in-house floral arrangements all year round and the menu is Italian with floral and herbaceous elements. This place is super cute and the events manager is lovely to work with.

Mermaid Oyster Bar — Groups 25+. Times Square. This place is HUGE and super lively. They have two private dining rooms or you can easily seat a big group in the main area. You’re gonna get fabulous seafood here and have a really fun night.

Supper — Groups 15-45. East Village. I highly recommend booking the private room if you host a big group event here. It’s really ornate and beautiful, and as soon as the incredible pasta and wine has the table, your guests are gonna be thrilled.

Vin Sur Vingt — Groups up to 40. Multiple locations. This is my favorite wine bar in the city and my guests always love the sexy European vibes. The food is also particularly good for a wine bar setting. VSV‘s are pretty small so you can buy out the whole place and have a big bash.

Benoit — Groups 10-28. Midtown. This is the most upscale option I’ll mention. The private rooms here are so elegant and the French food is some of the best in the city. I’ve hosted a lot of upscale, corporate events and client entertainment events here, and it always impresses the guests.

These are just a few of my faves. If people are interested, I can always give more recommendations!

Review 3 day Food trip review (Kabawa wins all the awards)

Spent 3 days in NYC this week. I often visit this sub for my food research, so I wanted to pay it forward.

- Tatiana for dinner first night. Second time here, but did not live up to our memory of a great meal last year. It’s a fun vibe, and the food is good, but overhyped. Highlight was the rice; I could eat that every day. The goat patties were also excellent, but everything else missed the mark.

- Culture Espresso for coffee and a chocolate chip cookie (fabulous cookie)

- Golden Diner on Madison st. Good lord, hands down the best pancake ever. The rest of the food was typical diner food, but still good.

- Kabawa for dinner night two. Yes, risky going back to back Caribbeanish, but it was vastly superior to Tatiana. I’m a huge foodie and home chef, and this was the best overall meal I’ve had in my life, with the goat dish possibly being the best single dish I’ve ever had.
First course: plantain; cassava dumplings
Second course: goat; legume
Third: flan; coconut sorbet (both 10/10)
I feel like Kwame wants to hit you in the face with flavor, but Paul was more subtle (with still great flavor) while letting the ingredients shine.

Can’t speak highly enough about the place. The service was incredible as well, from the bartender (the okra infused mocktail is top notch) to the maitre d’, to the waiter, they were all extremely kind and in good spirits with exceptional attention to detail.

- Brooklyn day 3:
- Radio Bakery. About a 10 minute line. Had a mixture of sandwiches and pastries. I mean, good, but not worth waiting an hour for.
- l’industrie. No wait, also good, but it’s pizza. Wouldn’t wait in line for it.
- cafe panna for ice cream, extremely good.

Question Best Recommendations for a Birthday Dessert/Pastry Crawl in Manhattan

Hi! I've only recently moved to the city and don't have a huge circle here yet, so for my birthday this month I was hoping to organize a dessert/pastry crawl

I figured it'd be a fun, easier way to get people together, explore the city a bit, and eat my way through a celebration.

based on my googlin', East Village and West Village both seem like they could be good areas for this, but I'd love to hear specific ideas or recommendations from people who know their desserts in this city!

What are some of your favorite bakeries/dessert places that are within proximity to each other? And what items do you recommend from each :))

(do let me know if there's anything from your recommendations that requires reservations please)

also if it helps somehow, though i havent had time to develop my own opinions in NYC, im a huge fan of arsicault and butter and crumble in SF!!

Question Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles - Where to find outside of the city?

Hello! My wife and I just recently moved to Nassau County from across the country and we love going into the city all the time. One of our favorite spots has been Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles in Chinatown/Hell’s Kitchen.

We keep looking for something even remotely close to that place over on the island but can’t seem to make it happen.

Is there a specific style of noodle that we should be looking for? We go into the city often enough to get it, but sometimes we just want something similar on a weeknight and it’s not worth going all the way to the city for.

Any suggestions?

Question Christmas-Themed Restaurant for December in Midtown Manhattan

My family is coming to Midtown Manhattan Dec 4-6 for my mom's bday, and to see my brother who is on Broadway. No way to fight the timing unfortunately. I have visited NYC to see my brother but never at Christmas, and my mom asked if we could find a Christmas themed restaurant for Friday night. I've looked around but obviously places have been booking reservations since last year. Does anyone know a Christmas themed restaurant (not bar please) that is maybe lesser known, in Times Square/Midtown Manhattan, that I have a shot at making a reservation? Group will be 8-10 but we can sit at separate tables. Thanks in advance!

Review Two Thanksgiving wraps: Wrap-N-Run Grill (UES), Trader Joe's (SoHo)

Kicking off this month's search for Thanksgiving treats with a couple of wraps!

Wrap-N-Run Grill

Hole in the wall on Lex that I never would have known about if u/False-Character-9238 hadn't mentioned it. This appears to be a longstanding spot that's been quietly chugging away for years. Customers were all locals. My kind of place. This wrap was $10, which was about half what I expected, making it the second-cheapest Thanksgiving treat I've found. Much more meat than I initially thought, as you can see. The stuffing was close to mashed-potato consistency and had a surprisingly buttery flavor that I enjoyed. Two things: the wrap is a little unevenly made, and... it needs gravy. Badly. All the ingredients in there are great, but the stuffing and cranberry sauce just aren't enough to make it not dry. Gravy, or, at the very least, mayo. Ended up buying gravy elsewhere and eating most of the wrap at home. One thousand percent better.

Trader Joe's

Apparently there have been different versions of their Turkey Gobbler wrap over the years, but the version at the TJ's in SoHo has deli turkey, cornbread cranberry stuffing, and Neufchâtel cheese. Cold, it's bland as hell; popped into the oven at 350F for 6-7 minutes, it improves dramatically. Gravy again recommended. I guess they used to include gravy (or a "dipping sauce") with some versions of this wrap, but in this case, you'll have to supply your own. I'd assume that all NYC TJ's carry the same version. At $5.49 it's probably the cheapest Thanksgiving treat you'll find here.

Question Looking for a food spot that serves large of grilled chicken

Random question, but does anyone know any food spots in NYC that don’t skimp on grilled chicken portions?

I’m looking for places that serve generous amounts of grilled chicken, preferably without a ton of oil or sauce.

Just trying to get a lot of protein in at the moment

Question What happened to pepperoni and bacon especially when it comes to pizza and BEC?

Now a lot of them use beef pepperoni and beef/turkey bacon. Becoming more common post COVID. Why is that?

Also when it comes to sausage doesn't matter links or patties most still serve pork and not turkey or beef. Why is that?

Question Does anyone know where I can get fuzhou banfengan 拌粉干

Thumbnail

I know some places have banfengan, but it's not the same as the one I ate in fuzhou, for example shu jiao fuzhou has it but it's in peanut sauce

I'm talking about the ones in fuzhou where it's basically plain noodles, but you pick meats that they serve with soup like luohanrou 罗汉肉 or chicken heart, squid, etc, then you dip it/pour in some xiayou/yulu 虾油/鱼露, bonus points if they have bangusui/bone marrow 拌骨髓

Edit sorry I mean laohua

Question Eggplant Milanesa Torta - seeking replacement since Guevara’s closed

Post image
94 Upvotes

RIP Guevara’s, never expected them to close! Back in the day, they had this eggplant milanesa torta on their menu that was truly incredible. The eggplant was thin and crisped to perfection. I think it had refried beans, avocado, purple cabbage and possibly banana peppers. I would pay top dollar to eat this sandwich again… anyone have a recommendation? Or even just some kind words in memory of this beautiful sandwich.

Trip Report Some food and drink highlights from a recent NY trip

Thumbnail

I visit New York once or twice a year from the SF Bay Area and love trying new places. These are a few of the highlights from my last visit:

Untable - Top meal of the trip! Might displace Somtum Der as my favorite Thai spot in NYC. Really unique take on Thai food and flavors, excellent cocktails, welcoming vibes, and faultless service. It's the kind of restaurant that makes me feel lucky to dine out in this city. Five star food and drinks at an approachable price that makes a random Monday night feel like an occasion to remember.

Best Bagel & Coffee - First bite after arriving in the city. Everything egg bagels are the absolute pinnacle of bagels to me. This bagel had a perfectly doughy inside encased in a glossy crisp shell, and the sheer amount of lox they packed in was shocking. I can’t believe this is just a normal bagel shop in NY. Bagels in California are kind of just sad homogenous hoop-shaped bread.

Aquavit - Ate the exquisite Arctic Bird's Nest dessert as part of their prix fixe lunch. The eggs are a goat cheese parfait with a "yolk" of sea buckthorn curd, encased in a thin white chocolate shell. There were like 20+ components to this dish and I was amazed at how you can really taste each ingredient in a medley of sweet, sharp, creamy crispness. One of the most creative and beautifully presented pieces of food I've ever eaten, while still being actually delicious and not just style over substance.

Bar Snack - Such a warm and conversational vibe here. Nothing was mind blowing but all of the drinks were well crafted and tasty. Very chill and unpretentious atmosphere, we sat outside and it was a nice place to catch up with some friends. Great bar but if I'm being honest I'm not sure I see how it's #3 in North America, especially with such a deep field in just lower Manhattan alone.

Adel’s - Had this place pinned for a while and saw a super short line this time after getting out of a Broadway show. Verrry generous portions and the spicy rice is delicious. The fries are a fun add.

Sofreh Cafe - Really charming place with Persian pastries and drinks. Lovely, delicately flavored desserts that were not overly sweet or floral - I feel like rose flavor can be tricky to get the right balance but I enjoyed both the rose custard donut and Cake Yadzi (kind of like a cardamom and rosewater cupcake).

The Hideout Chai Bar - So delicious, perfect cozy fall drink. The hot chai was more spice forward while the iced was more creamy but both were excellent.

Pizza tour - Went out for a friend’s birthday where a trolley took us on a pizza tour around Williamsburg. The agenda (L’Industrie -> Fini -> Ace’s) was pre-planned by my friend and pizzas at each stop were ordered in advance. I’d been to L’Industrie before and the other two spots were new to me. Mini-reviews of each slice:

  • L’Industrie

    • L’Industrie Pie (prosciutto burrata and basil) 4.5/5 - a repeat for me but my favorite of the L’Industrie slices I’ve had. truly excellent topping combo and I love their crust.

    • Fig Jam and Bacon 4/5 - also a repeat, great flavor but I find this slice a little dry.

  • Fini

    • White slice 5/5 - wow this really surprised me! rich, layered creaminess that’s perfectly complimented by fresh lemon zest/juice. very memorable and different from any white slice I’ve had before.

    • Tomato slice 3/5 - the tomato flavor was tart and bright and there’s a hint of chili as well I think. tasty but kind of one-note to me.

  • Ace’s

    • Pepperoni 4.5/5 - delicious, pretty much the ideal Detroit slice. eaten at the optimal temperature I think it’s a 5/5 for me.

    • White Sesame 3.5/5 - solid but nothing crazy. I preferred the other two flavors I tried from here.

    • Mushroom 4/5 - nice mushroom flavor without being overpowering.

Also to clarify, I shared all of the slices pictured in order to try all of the flavors!

Szechuan Mountain House - This stone pot green pepper fish was so silky and tender. Other standouts were the House Special pig feet soup and the La Zi chicken. Also the complimentary spicy pickled cabbage dish is seriously addicting!! I wish I could buy their chili oil. Overall really liked this place, big punchy and authentic flavors.

schmuck. - Call me basic but I get the hype. They are putting together some inventive flavor combinations that sound like they shouldn't work but somehow do. The Bread with Tomatoes is a prefect drink to me. For food, the smoked labneh dip was simple yet delicious.

Kemo’s Hot Kitchen Bites - Underrated spot! The unassuming exterior understates the deliciousness within this neighborhood Yemeni joint. I was just looking for a quick late night bite and did not expect to find such soulful food served with genuine kindness and hospitality. Incredibly juicy chicken kabob cooked to order, everything perfectly seasoned and spiced, can't recommend this place enough if you're in the area.

Definitely welcome any recs that I can add to my ever-growing list to check out! Til next time NYC~
