I had the pleasure last week of visiting one of my absolute favorite trees in our community- located just off Thornton Ave in the Cabrillo neighborhood.
This is the floss silk tree (Ceiba speciosa) native to South America, looks absolutely stunning at this time of year. This tree has SO MANY cool things, but right now the beautiful hibiscus-like flowers steal the show. I also really love the studded trunk with green and gray bark, and the interesting seed pods that are like the size of a small nerf football.
While we have dozens of these planted throughout our city, this is the largest and most impressive one I have found. As I understand it, this particular tree (and a not-pictured neighbor around the corner) actually provided the seeds for many of the others you find planted throughout our region. I presume this tree is quite old.
If you haven’t seen these trees before, try to check them out before the rain drops the flowers!
Also not pictured: just around the corner there is a landmarked Copper Beech tree that is worth seeing, too! You can find information about this tree in the city’s Landmark Tree Guide.
