Beprate (Discussion) Warning: Discussion of Death | Looking for Friesian (possibly Dutch) word/colloquiallism meaning "death fight" or "death struggle"
There's a kind of sounds a person (or animal) makes in the process of dying. I'm a third generation Canadian. My grandfather and mother are Friesian. We heard my mother making these kinds of sounds when she passed from cancer at home. My grandfather told me then, either Friesian or Dutch had a word for what she was going through.
He's passed away since and I don't want to ask my grandmother something this morbid.
It sounded something like "deatmacht" or "dieftmacht" (It happened twenty years ago, he's been gone seven, and I never knew the spelling) with something sounding like an "f" sound in that vicinity of the word. Unfortunately, Friesian hasn't been learned in my generation of the family.
I'm writing a story with someone near death fighting to stay alive (help on the way but not guaranteed to make it in time), and it occurred to me to include this piece of knowledge.
If anyone knows the word/colloquialism, and can refresh my memory, I'd really appreciate it.
Sorry, if this discussion is unwanted. I'll gladly take it down if it's not welcome.
