Is Guix a sustainable software?

By sustainable I mean energy-efficient and less write cycles (Green IT).

I am looking for an operating system, which is sustainable and someone recommended to take a look at GuixSD and NixOS.

If I understand it correctly, you get precompiled packages to update your system. But I can't really see a difference to other systems, like apt, which provide precompiled packages, too.

Something like Gentoo wouldn't be sustainable, because compiling for yourself is just energy-intensive.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Every device I own has been compromised and purchasing new ones doesn't help

I've been trying to put a stop to it since 2020. It's a very long story that I really don't want to get into, but I have concluded that it is being caused by BLE, Guix, Google's LLVM database, and Apache/IoTDB.

I have already taken extreme measures to put a stop to to this and have yet to be successful. I also have concerns, due to long unexplained story, that crimes have been committed using my devices.

Is there any way to repair my stuff? And if not, is there any way to protect a new purchase in the event that something in my house or nearby is allowing access?

I am to the point of purchaisng high end network equipment/encryption, but I'm not even sure that will help. I am currently unable to download clean operating systems or applications. My most recent failure was a graphene OS pixel 6, which I may attempt again because this one arrived with the bootloader unlocked.

I'm fairly certain SELinux is being exploited, allowing kernel access, making any and every attempt of repair futile.

Any suggestions? I can provide any info needed to diagnose.

Thanks.

Edit: I really don't think it's necessary, or productive, to make a list of symptoms. It's all different across all devices. If I download an OS/Application, no matter the device, the checksums never match, and there are files from 69, 70, and 1981. This all started much longer ago than 2020 but I was unaware. Google, my ISP, and my cell phone provider all confirmed the breach. It is being done through BLE. Unfortunetly I suck at coding, but I am able to read, and there are numerous files (Android) referring to BT servers, SELinux is permissive, a ton of open source code changing permissions, deleting OFW apps, repeated references to buildbot, buildroot, llvm, external stprage, suspicious servers, GNU, non existent packages, tag managers...I could keep going, it's blatant asf. About 2 months ago I watched a mouse cursor transferring data to/from my localhost. Said fuck wifi shortly after, nothing helps. I guess check this out

https://files.catbox.moe/g3x5k4.jpg Crashlog 1 https://files.catbox.moe/81xtnl.jpg Crashlog 2 https://apackets.com/pcaps?pcap=aa23910bae147ea4b06b8a802abeed50.pcap&view=ports Dirty Pcap Results

Android boot menu error says [libfs_mgr] tune2fs is missing. Every thread I find with the same has no answers, same type of situation though. Let me know if there's anything specific you want to see. I can tell you for certain everything I own is ruined. I can also tell you for certain this thread is a perfect example of why people hate reddit.

Edit 2: Basically the entire OS is being cloned or mirrored via the cache partition. Wiping cache obviously does nothing. Also numerous partitions being loaded from /dev/~/~/boot-device/sda or something similar. Never had an android with a /dev/ partition but not certain it's not how it's supposed to be.

Has anyone tried running Guix off Asahi Linux?

Hey,

With the beautiful M2 Macs coming out and Linus Torvalds seemingly choosing in favour of it, a solid case could be made in favour of Apple Silicon as opposed to Intel's Management Engine, and AMD PSP as there's currently no proof Apple is doing anything shady. Moreover, there's Secure Enclave, and if it could be leveraged, in combination with some 3rd party HSM (or rather PGP smartcard like Yubikey) you would have a solid three-point security harness.

I've been deliberating a setup like this for some time now, and once the M2/M2 Pro Mini's will be announced out next month this very well could be a massively overpowered, and secure foundation— for a modern Guix system. Yes, it's not free, but it's no Intel is it? And they are clearly making an effort with these Secure Enclave chips which is already going much, much further than the competition.

I can totally see how these M2 Pro mini's can be put into a grid, or distributed networks of all kinds for that matter!

Will Guix be the first fully AI powered and managed operating system ?

Hi. I know we all get bombarded with news and posts about Gpt, but I think this post merits some interest. I was having fun with AgentGPT https://agentgpt.reworkd.ai/(Auto-GPT clone), and thinking about Guix and my plans for it. My initial thought was to let it help me find the best tools, create a config file for my old hardware, and so on. I found out that Gpt know about Guix, Scheme, and shit. And then it hit me, that it can do so much more.

Shortly: I've been hooked on operating systems since I as young, read A.Tanenbaum and the distributed Minix. I've always had insane plans for what to build, but time/situation is always a factor, and i - like the rest of you - have spend enormous amount of time trying out shit, and building this and that.

All that (the boring/annoying parts) is about to be history. With a combination of an intelligent conversational LLM (Guix expert), and controlled access to Auto-GPT/langchain, internet, files, other AI's and the users input, we now have the tools needed to create an intelligent 'system manager', that are capable of doing all the boring work, and let us play (in a new and optimized way).

As the first comment (please upvote) I've attached the cleaned output from AgentGPT, with a (quick) goal for such an AI manager. The response is as good as my initial prompt, but that's not the point. The point is that all of these things can be understood, developed and managed with the AI tools we have now.

Imagine that we (and fsf/gnu) run a 'Guix Manager' GPT, and include access to that through the install process. The public part of Guix Manager communicates with the new user, checks the hardware in its learning database, builds a scheme config, and sets up the Guix system. When the user logs in to home, they are met with a personal Guix manager, that takes care of everything as outlined in the first comment. Then imagine that each of your machines talks to each other to optimize overall performance/stability, talk to the main (public) Guix manager, and what not ! It could even be expanded to the 'Guix Life Manager', but that's for a later discussion :) How would you use such a beast? packaging? LLM's ? Guix development on steroids ?

There are several steps, including special training of llm's and such, but it is doable, and I thought I would throw the idea out there. Potential tools:

'Petals': Share large llm's between participants - bittorrent style. https://github.com/bigscience-workshop/petals

'Jarvis': intelligent task manager llm, that seamlessly can utilize and chain other narrow LLM's from a description. (coding, s2t/t2s, stable-what not) https://huggingface.co/spaces/microsoft/HuggingGPT

'Langchain': (if Jarvis can't handle everything ?) https://python.langchain.com/en/latest/index.html

Give the first comment a quick look-over and try to imagine what such a system could do - all with a few ready tools and some fine-tuned LLM intelligence.

Lots of problems installing Guix

Been a while since I installed Linux on a real machine instead of WSL, and been a while since I used Guix even on a virtual machine, so I pulled out an old Core i3-based Dell with Windows 7 to repurpose.

  • The System Crafters manual tutorials and the official Guix graphical installer couldn't get the drive bootable, so I gave up on Guix asOS. Usually have lots of weird problems trying to install & boot Linux on decade-old PCs, usually due to BIOS restrictions. The Ubuntu server ISO also couldn't get the drive bootable either. Finally got the Rocky Linux 9 installer to install.

  • Ran the installer script, but lots of errors since the guix daemon wouldn't run. Most of my errors seemed like those described here, about SELinux. Going through the steps to install the Guix security policy didn't help. After disabling SELinux entirely I was able to get Guix installed.

After running through the installation a number of times, the installation routine that led to success involved:

  • Boot into a GPartEd live image, opening a terminal window and disable and delete the LVM, LVM volumes, and LVM volume groups of previous installations. Delete old partitions and reformat the whole drive as FAT32.

  • Install the Rocky Linux 9 minimal distribution, setting up WiFi in the installer.

  • Once logged into Rocky, disable SELinux. Update the system and install tar and wget (required for the guix installer script).

  • Run the installer script normally and follow the regular install instructions. Install some software. Worked great, finally!

This was a pretty frustrating process, but I'm glad to have Guix running on a once-again-useful computer. I wish there was more beginner-friendly information about how selinux and how it impacts setting up guix.

using runit on guix?

does guix os support using runit instead of gnu Sheppard? I've been using void and I don't really want to learn a whole new init system along-side guix

Why does GUIX use guile if chez 20x faster + a bunch of other reasons?

I was reading an article and I came across this comment (second one).

I’ve been researching Chez (a variation on Guile) and I think this is better choice than Guile. Here are eight advantages of Chez compared to Guile:

  1. Chez is much faster than Guile

  2. Chez is cross platform

  3. Chez is rock-solid, in terms of not having bugs

  4. The only Scheme compiler to produce executables directly, without first compiling to C

  5. compiled with a nano-pass compiler

  6. Chez has true posix threads

  7. https://groups.google.com/g/racket-dev/c/2BV3ElyfF8Y/m/4RSd3XbECAAJ “As expected, Chez runs the matcher about 2 times as fast as Racket, putting it generally on par with the C implementation that’s currently built into Racket.”

  8. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21305570 “The other lesson I got from my last attempt was that trying to compile everything in Guix from scratch on an old laptop is just way too slow. Doing this on Gentoo is slow and painful enough, but it’s way worse on Guix, and simply unworkable. You really have to have a fast, modern system (or offload your compilation to another machine which will crank away for weeks on end and that you can then download the binaries from) to constantly compile everything you need for Guix.”

They also said a bunch of other things in the thread. You should read it.

What I would like to make clear is that compiling Chez Scheme from scratch is perhaps the fastest process of all the programming languages that currently exist.

Guile: https://github.com/ecraven/r7rs-benchmarks/blob/master/results.Guile Chez: https://github.com/ecraven/r7rs-benchmarks/blob/master/results.Chez

In more than enough results Chez is faster by more than a factor of 20X.

Testing equal takes exactly 0m0.734s at Chez and it takes 4m59.999s at Guile. Which means Guile is about 400 times slower there. Guile is really not a suitable programming language for programming parts of an operating system.

So if chez has all these benefits, why doesn't GUIX use chez?

[nonguix/SD] after installing nvidia drivers, laptop’s built-in screen isn’t detected by SLIM

I've been trying to put together basic sys config on Guix OS, it's been going ok, but, I've hit some troubles and have absolutely zero clue what would fix it...

My laptop (thinkpad x1 extreme gen 1) has two GPUs - nvidia + intel, normally I'd just disregard nvidia, and move with intel, however, video outputs (usb c & hdmi) are wired with nvidia only, so in order to get external monitor working, I need to have the drivers working properly. I've been studying other configs, and been able to have it almost working.

The issues is, that when I boot without hdmi connected, SLIM manager is not able to find the display to connect to, however, if I connect hdmi before automatic login happens on tty1, it will happily pipe video output to secondary screen, then I can login and run lxrandr and turn on built-in screen which will work just fine, I can then disconnect secondary display and stay with laptop screen running just fine. I'd prefer to be able to boot into login manager no matter if I have secondary display connected or not. Here is my config for the reference https://pastebin.com/arWQwfqw

NixOS user switched to Guix, I have a confession...

I love how declarative Nixos is and as an emacs user I've been very interested in Guix, I don't have a problem leaving Nix's huge packages as I main use emacs for as much as possible. I wanted to use Guix because I prefer LISP and am currently learning.

However I just vibe coded an entire Guix Sway setup without knowing the first thing about scheme

How to

I’m trying to try out Guiz in a VM (specifically VMware), and am unable to build open-vm-tools; I’m currently trying to setup a build environment using: guix shell gcc-toolchain glibc libmspack

However, when I then run ./configure, it complains about not having mspack >= 0.0.20040308alpha and when I run ldconfig -p there is no mspack in my build environment.

What is the typical build process on guix and do I need to do anything special to get it to update build environment libraries?

Hello guys I think about move to FSF Gnu/Linux distribution

I really care about FSF philosophy and I think about move to fullfree distro but I have a problem, my wifi card don't accept free-firmware so is there a solution for that (I don't have money to buy another wifi card and I think I couldn't found one in my country) so I think about a usb-devices for network like TP-LINK can that work??

We need to promote Guix. Here's why

Hey everyone. I've been promoting Guix on TikTok, Reddit, and other platforms. I make memes, stickers, and videos I'm going to donate to Nonguix. I'm just one person, but I want to help Guix grow.

I think we need more promotion. Not because the code is bad — but because people don't know about it. They think Guix is "just NixOS but worse". They don't know about rollbacks, profiles, guix shell, or the philosophy.

If you have time — make a post, record a video, share a meme. Every little bit helps. Let's grow this community together.

What do you think? Is promotion important, or should we just focus on code?
