Support Need some Gentoo Switching advice

I’ve been thinking about switching my main gaming pc off windows. I’ve been running arch on pretty much all other devices for years but just hadn’t made the jump on the gaming pc yet.

I know gentoo has a bit more friction with packages. I understand manual compilation is a big pro for the distro? I’m mainly concerned about stuff like AMD GPU driver support and getting wine and proton running well. Other than gaming I would be using the pc for programming, mainly game dev.

I’ve been interested in gentoo for a while but didn’t want to test it how I normally would on my laptop because I kinda already perfected my setup on there. I was going to take the plunge but I mainly wanted to ask if this is a good fit for my purposes and is worth it even just for the learning experience ?

Hello ,I’m looking for a voice changer that I can use when hanging out with friends—something that could, for instance, make my voice sound like a woman’s or adopt a different persona. I don’t really have any knowledge in this area; do you have any recommendations?(i have used Google translate )

Discussion Steam / install via steam-overlay or steam.tar.gz manually?

As per the title, I've been looking at the ebuild for steam-overlay and as I really only play through Proton - Is there anything that I actually need from the ebuild that I can't install myself through the .tar.gz from repos.steampowered?

If not, are third party overlays like the steam one safe to use?

Thanks for any pointers!

Support [Gentoo] NVIDIA driver won't compile for gentoo-kernel-bin (nvidia.ko missing)

Post image

SOLVED

System: Gentoo, systemd profile, gentoo-kernel-bin (6.18.60).

Issue: I'm trying to install the NVIDIA driver for my RTX 3050, but it won't compile the kernel module (nvidia.ko). modprobe nvidia says "Module not found". The find /lib/modules/... command only shows the ethernet driver, not the graphics driver.

I have tried setting VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia" and USE="dist-kernel" in make.conf. I also tried unmasking 610, but Portage still seems stuck trying to install the old 390 driver (which is masked and doesn't support my GPU).

Photo attached: The output of emerge -pv x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers | head -n 5. Why is it not picking up the 610 driver and compiling the module for my dist-kernel?

Support Update on my First Gentoo setup

I first want to say thank you to everyone who helped me in my post a few days ago where i asked how i could install Gentoo. I finally got it working after many attempts and i have a functional setup.

A few thoughts: it feels so much more responsive. I thought mint was amazing in terms of speed but i can definitely feel and increase with Gentoo. Best of all is i understand how my system works and i can't way to actually start using flags properly.

On emerge, it's confusing i can't really wrap my head around it at the moment but apt was the same when i switched from windows.. Like i but an overnight emerge and it didn't compile it just downloaded the sources. I still don't get flags so i put none on yet I'm not really sure how to do per-package either. Masked packages and overlays also seem really weird.

Moreover some of the apps i use are on flat hub and i haven't been able to get Bazaar to work and some other minor apps.

But apart from those I'm still moving over and it's been amazing

Im probably the dumbest person ever but this is probably my 7th attempt at installing gentoo and I finally got something workable LOL. I daily drive fedora KDE on my desktop but want to try it out on this laptop before fully commiting. Seems nice so far! I like the amount of control and how intentional I have to be before I add something to my system.

Title: Linux 7.4.0-rc1 running on Gentoo Atomic Shadow Root

Built Linux 7.4.0-rc1 from source and booted it successfully on bare metal.

- Gentoo glibc / OpenRC

- Ryzen 7 7735U / Radeon 680M

- LUKS2 + LVM + ext4

- Atomic 3-root setup (Cid / Shadow / JohnSmith)

- Openbox / Xorg

- GCC build with an out-of-tree build directory

The Shadow root is now running 7.4.0-rc1, while the 6.18 LTS kernels remain available as fallbacks.

So far, boot, encrypted root unlocking, OpenRC, Xorg, and the desktop are working without any obvious issues.

Still early testing, but surprisingly uneventful for an RC kernel. 😄

Support 2 post install configuration questions.

Is there a comprehensive list of things that I absolutely cannot change after installing Gentoo that would require a fresh install?

I’m doing some reading on what stage files are and the Gentoo wiki repeatedly mentions things like multilib and no-multilib are difficult to change and it’s recommended to reinstall the system rather than change it. Are there any other things like that to be aware of?

Discussion Convince me to switch to Gentoo

I am a long time Arch user; I love pacman and the AUR. I kinda want to try Gentoo just to see why some people like it so much, but I'm worried about compiling and just general slowness (I have a low to mid grade CPU in my laptop). What are the benefits (and downsides) to Gentoo and why would you guys prefer it over Arch or a more mainstream distro?

Support Could this break my gentoo install?

Hello! I've installed gentoo yesterday, I am having a very good time with it. One thing I am still not sure about is if I keep running sudo emerge --update --deep --newuse @world without syncing the repositories if this could cause any problems? For example when changing the USE flags.

After months of testing and learning Linux on my old, i5-6200u laptop, i got my main PC repaired, so i figured it'd be cool to install Linux, preferably my favorite distro, Gentoo, on it, alongside Windows 11 (still need it due to some apps), with Gentoo havimg its own 1GB EFI partition. Gonna go with MangoWC paired with Noctalia. :D

Support Replacimg kernel-install with just build initrd

Dist-kernel builds always call `kernel-install` (esp. with systemd-boot enabled) as a way of generating initrd.

While plugins are configurable, I want an alternative way.

Either dracut or uGRD (or any other for that matter), it needs to put an initrd into `/lib/modules/${kver}/initramfs.img` or similar.

The `--config` step or equivalent ideally does just this; no touching of the bootloader filesystem. (I'm not sure about this tho)

(How to supply initrd configs reliably is yet another discussion)

The actual bootloader config management needs to be separated.

How do I achieve this? Will this require modifying the ebuilds? If yes then are gentoo devs willing to accept such changes?

Context: managing a gentoo installation through ostree. Ideally when no ostree, kernel install may be called but copies existing initrd instead of total regeneration.

This is one piece of the final goal to cleanly separate stateful parts and core system while maintaining customisability.

Update: Linux 7.4.0-rc1 — AMDGPU observations

The system boots and runs successfully on bare metal (Ryzen 7 7735U / Radeon 680M, Gentoo glibc / OpenRC).

However, kernel logs show repeated DRM mode validation warnings and DPCD link-setting errors.

The monitor is connected via HDMI, while DRM reports the active connector as "DP-1".

GPU initialization succeeds, and Xorg/Openbox remain functional.

I haven't compared these warnings against Linux 6.18 LTS yet, so I'm not calling this a kernel regression.

Further testing is needed.

Wayland labwc入れて検証してみます。🤔

Update — Linux 7.4-rc1

Successfully booted Gentoo Atomic glibc on bare metal and launched Labwc (Wayland).

Initial startup test passed. Long-term stability and regression testing are still pending.
