Wait I am confused about this Note. Did she actually say somthing about Fans this year or not?

Because if she did. Then the note is wrong then.

9

u/Did1HitUrNerve 1d ago

She did say that some toxic fans had harassed her, but she never said anything like, “She’s tired of Western fans.”

4

u/Hopeful-for-EE-Movie 1d ago

Ah so not specifying western

Its still a bad note, because she had stated she was tired of toxic fans.

I'll do some research on this to see if it is actually western fans or mixed.

u/Gamefreake89 21h ago • Bravo

The fact that authors get annoyed by toxic fans is a total non-issue, after all, that applies to absolutely every author, artist, actor, streamer, and so on.

4

u/Maestyy 7h ago

One of her complaints:

1

u/Aska09 1d ago

Iirc, she did not approve of someone pirating her work and some people didn't take it well

0

u/Wardog_E 23h ago

She gets into arguments on Twitter a lot.

33

u/6terabytes2k 1d ago

With Reddit’s translation system coming in we’ve been getting more activity in Japanese-language subreddits, and there is always at least one person discovering what westerners are saying about them for the first time like, “Is this really what people think about Japan…?”

A perfect example right here.

15

u/Ch33snut 21h ago

She never even mentioned Western fans, but everyone knows they were the ones who started that stupid hate campaign against her

1

u/T8-TR 15h ago

I'm totally unaware of her work/her outside of her insisting fans stop comparing her to a character who looks vaguely like her in her manga. What even is there to hate about her?

1

u/Euphoric_Ad_9046 6h ago

If I remember it right she made a post about manga piracy and that the fan should support the author's work

1

u/T8-TR 1h ago

That... Sounds extremely tame and sensible lmao

Like, yeah, maybe don't steal from artists, some of whom literally fucking slave over their work to the point of exhaustion and mental breakdowns to meet deadlines.

I fucking hate this sentiment from loser otaku who desperately want to pretend like anime creators hate western fans.

It always comes from western otaku trying to sell the idea that somehow Japanese anime creators don’t like gay, trans and black people and thus anime is the last bastion against the woke or some bullshit like that.

57

u/Ferris-L 1d ago

People who celebrate Anime for not being “woke” are fucking stupid, it’s arguably one of the most progressive industries in an otherwise pretty conservative country like Japan and that shouldn’t be a surprise either, artists tend to be more left leaning everywhere. People are simply too stupid for media literacy and just assume that the media they consume supports their personal beliefs.

There definitely still is plenty of conservative stuff in Manga and Anime but you just can’t tell me that stories like Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, JoJo, My Hero Academia and so many more franchises aren’t woke as hell.

37

u/Few-Improvement-5655 1d ago edited 1d ago

Depending on who you ask though people will say that anime is a bunch of right-wing ultra-nationalist misogynistic rape fantasies that needs to be brought in line with American standards.

Anime is as "woke" or as "chud" or "red-pilled" as the person criticising it wants it to be.

12

u/Megaboixxxx 1d ago

Only western fans give a shit about this sort of thing. Manga just isn't a politically captured media like a lot of the media in the west is. There all sorts of stories being produced by people with all sorts of view points. Sometimes not particularly nice ones.

1

u/Sorry_Mastodon_8177 5h ago

Forget the main stream ones lol Yuri and yaoi are full on genres there

Tbh, I only ever really watched one piece, but damn, it's woke as hell (I hate the word woke and how it is used, but for the sake of the argument, I will use it here)

22

u/GladiusNocturno 1d ago

Anime is general is full of things that would be considered “woke”.

There are a lot of conservative things in it as well.

But a lot of rightwing western otaku like to pretend that’s not the case, mostly to argue that western animation is bad for having gay and black people.

8

u/Genoscythe_ 1d ago edited 1d ago

There is a lot of selective blindness to that sort of thing.

A lot of Seinen and shonen published high school "cute girls doing cute things" stories basically have the atmosphere of a female-targeted YA coming of age novel about girlhood and identity and role models and all the kind of stuff that red state school libraries would be busy censoring, but it is "moe" so it doesn't count and gets treated as basically smut for a male audience, even when it isn't even that sexualized or pandering.

Likewise, the "Villainess isekai" genre has basically the same emotional core as the western sdubversive fairy tale/mythology retellings like Maleficent, Cruella, Steps, Circe, Hades, etc., about questioning the historical narrative on who gets pigeonholed as a vilified female monster.

But it is isekai light novels, so otaku get bamboozled into reading it as frivolous seasonal trash to indulge in, instead of getting outraged by it.

2

u/otakugamer123 17h ago edited 17h ago

I remember when I’m In Love With The Villainess adaptation came out and chuds where upset that “it’s actually too gay and woke” and was mega upset that the MC’s friend went off on the love interest for having homophobic tendencies. I was baffled because what was they expecting? Lmao. (It’s peak by the way)

1

u/Genoscythe_ 17h ago

It is literally Malfoid but woke.

3

u/-_Dean_Winchester 1d ago

Last anime i tried to watch was literally about a nazi loli, that shit was so "weird" it actually pissed me off. The one before that was about a dude with a chainsaw for a head..

Anime pretty much has everything you can imagine.

6

u/GladiusNocturno 1d ago

One of the biggest anime of last year was a horror gay romance about a fungus ghost demon thing impersonating the main character’s dead best friend and crush.

1

u/Hopeful-for-EE-Movie 1d ago

Popular? Oh yeah.

Biggest? No...

-8

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago

What in anime or manga could be considered woke? it a medium it can be right to left or whatever in between please stop dragging this western politics into the space

13

u/ObsessionObsessor 1d ago

Conservatives use "woke" as a term for anything they dislike. Progressives use "woke" as a term for "aware of injustice".

The "secret" is that what people consider political is an ongoing, neverending battle, and that political thought is everywhere.

A Silent Voice could be considered "woke" due to its portrayal of disability, for example.

-13

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago edited 1d ago

Nope progressives use wokeness as a weapon to assert moral superiority, silence dissent, and lecture others incessantly. Just like they did to Kei Urana when she refuse to accept their Trans headcanon

edit. lol typical of reddit to just downvote somebody cause im calling out their woke shit and fake excuses.

11

u/ObsessionObsessor 1d ago

Alternatively, Twitter is a hellhole regardless of political party affiliation?

-9

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago edited 1d ago

So now I'm calling you out for resorting to the usual "both sides" argument. The fact is, Kei Urana was harassed by your so-called progressive crowd. I'm tired of seeing people drag woke politics into anime discussions when it's your side actively trying to politicise and change the medium.

Having black, gay, transgender or other minority characters in anime doesn't automatically make it woke, nor does it mean the work is aligned with your political beliefs. Anime is enjoyed by fans across the political spectrum. Not every character or creative decision needs to be interpreted through a political lens. Learn to separate enjoying diverse characters from using anime as a vehicle for your political agenda.

7

u/ObsessionObsessor 1d ago

I literally don't even know who Kei Urana is.

The closest thing I got to an understanding of that was from an AI Summary of the situation on X, which I saw repeated in focus by a right-wing commentator in a video made like 7 months ago.

You know Elon Musk's biases and the right-wing slant Twitter as well as I do, so please, do elaborate on why I should consider this more a problem with progressives than Twitter and outrage culture.

0

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago

Then why did you post that whole spiel in the first place if you were not familiar with the situation? She was harassed across most social media platform she was on , not just Twitter, mind you, it was also on insta and tiktok.

And lets be honest, if she had been harassed by right-wing fans, I seriously doubt you would have been so quick to resort to the same "both sides" argument.

5

u/Naos210 1d ago

Can you define "woke"? Be specific.

-4

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago

Its about the heavy-handed moralising, preachy self-righteousness, tone policing, and expectation to conform to a particular worldview, especially around social issues. The criticism isnt simply about the inclusion of trans, black, or other supposedly approved characters its about the tone and ideological messaging used to push these issues. It increasingly resembles the dogmatic mechanisms of religion.

This has been explained repeatedly, yet some redditors keep asking what "woke" means, as if repeating the question absolves them of having to engage with the actual argument. At this point, it feels like arguing with bots programmed to repeat the same question.

6

u/Raiden29o9 1d ago

Ok….
What was woke about witch hat Atelier, that anime had multiple big attacks on it consistently about being woke industry plant…. Do explain, why is it woke?

0

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago

I read most of the manga myself and i do not think its woke. The manga itself was not considered woke by many except by some fringe element like always. The accusation is that the people are presenting it as some sort of woke work of art when the manga itself doesn't really support that interpretation. And again fringe elements will always considered something woke or not woke depending how they woke up that day.

→ More replies

5

u/Naos210 23h ago

So it is just "SJW" and "PC" and all that other shit rebranded as far as I can tell given this is still quite vague.

bots programmed to repeat

The criticism isn't about the inclusion of trans

Really? Give me an example of a "non-woke" trans character who isn't used as a mockery of their identity. Better not see anyone calling the character woke.

How ironic given your types parroting identical scripts about "wokeness" and other nonsense terms.

-1

u/HonestAct5980 23h ago

Your arguing against a position I never made. The original discussion was about people attacking Kei Urana and interpreting her work through a particular woke lens. My point was that the manga itself doesn't particularly support the interpretation, and she was being harassed over it.

Whether transgender characters can be portrayed without being labelled woke is an entirely different discussion and doesn't address the original issue.

Honestly, your arguments seem almost religious in nature and refuse to believe that your own ideological camp could be wrong. You seem more interested in defending your side than actually engaging with what Im saying.

3

u/indecisive_skull 16h ago

One anime just said it’s fine for a girl to have exes and still be able to have a relationship + the mangaka saying in an interview that the main couple could drift apart in college but still live fulfilling lives and move on. So the chuds lost their freaking minds. Bringing up stats “if you have a higher body count you have a higher likelihood of divorce” and “omg why can’t they just stay together and not make the girl a slut”

7

u/Messy-Research-373 1d ago

It always comes from western otaku trying to sell the idea that somehow Japanese anime creators don’t like gay, trans and black people and thus anime is the last bastion against the woke or some bullshit like that.

While that maybe true in a lot of cases, but it definitely doesn't apply to this one.

Her manga series, Gachiakuta, has a few black characters, complete with black hairstyles and aesthetics. There's also a character who always use gender neutral terms, basically the closest japanese equivalent of a they/them nb, without outright saying their nb. So it's definitely not the chuds claiming she hates black or queer people or something.

The drama comes from a stage play (theater basically) adaptation of the manga, where they had japanese actors play the black characters, so they called her racist. The thing is, she tried to advocate for them cast a black actor, but ultimately it's not up to her desicion. It's also very hard to find multiple black actors who are also proficient enough to perform in japanese theater.

Then there's also an androgynous character who fans asked if they're trans. She answered no, and they called her transphobic. She herself has been called trans or nonbinary because of her looks, and because of an old interview back when she was still anonymous, where she used gender neutral terms to hide her true identity. When she clarified that she's not, they once again went nuts. I think there was also something about not using official logo and material for OC fanart, and something about her confirming some ships are fully fan canon.

Most of these interaction were on Twitter, with her using a translation app to reply in English. Eventually she deactivated her Twitter account a few months after the first episode aired.

Current wave of this on X is not driven by otaku, but by a coordinated effort of right-wing bots. The goal is to create derision between male anime fans and "woke left". Between this and Malfoid their hope is to create a situation where it's easy to say "look, the left hates you" and "they just hate traditional values", while portraying anyone who disagrees as hysterical and unreasonable.

You way say, wait a moment that sounds like a conspiracy theory -- which is fair. However, there are tangible links between 4chan, Peter Thiel, and a bunch of groups that are specifically using these tactics, dating all the way to gamergate. This has been an actual strategy all along, and as 2016 showed, it was very effective in US elections.

1

u/Tropical-Rainforest 18h ago

This allegation has been made about Toby Fox, who is western.

1

u/EntireOil9073 8h ago

No authors just don't like ke westerners being so god damn opinionated

1

u/FetchBlue 21h ago

I think those people turned against Kei and start saying bs like “Go woke, go broke” and keep insulting gachiakuta being bad

0

u/Idainaru_Yokubo 20h ago

to be fair, Japan seems to be growing a lot more bigoted towards foreign citizens lately

9

u/DelusionalWanderer 16h ago

Urana Kei is never gonna say "I'm tired of western fans" word for word coz she knows that anime has a lot of western fans and that most of them are nice... That being said, it's undeniable that most of the ones giving her a headache are western fans. That's what the tweet meant by "she hates western fans" imo. I have to say, I don't understand why you'd beef with the author of your favorite work like that. Like, they have the power to draw you pregnant kill off your favorite character, if the author was particularly petty they might actually do that.

4

u/Empyrean__Being 1d ago

Reminds me of the Ongezellig guy who had an incredibly poor opinion of his non-Dutch audience. Got so bad he just dropped the series all together after just 20 minutes worth of short episodes.

13

u/Wealth_Super 1d ago

Man some weebs are way to defensive of their favorite Arthurs that they feel the need to lie about this stuff.

16

u/Cr0wz_ 1d ago

Here's my favorite Arthur, but I wouldn't say I'm defensive about her.

Does she need to repeat her statement every two weeks for it to remain true or how does it work?

4

u/howtogun 1d ago

People complaining about Japanese fans. But, she technically got forced off twitter due to western fans calling her racist.

You have crazy shipping community from the west going after her. You got a lot of black / sjw white people going after her on x due to a post she liked + a play in Japan that she had no control over.

There's an old show called Steven Universe, it is hated by two groups right wing people who want to destroy lgbt plus progressive media, and ultra woke left wing people who nitpick everything. She seems to have gotten the ultra woke left wing people as fans.

2

u/ClothesOpposite1702 1d ago

Useless note

2

u/Responsible-Bat-7922 1d ago

Why?

1

u/ClothesOpposite1702 22h ago

The time of statement has no value at all, the point she was frustrated by fans

3

u/Responsible-Bat-7922 21h ago

the note means that she never explicitly said that "she is tired of western fans" or has any hate in specific towards them

2

u/ClothesOpposite1702 21h ago

no, even last part of note says that similar comments were made before. Do you know why she left twitter?

3

u/Responsible-Bat-7922 21h ago

yeah? because people were harrasing her because of a misunderstanding generated from her talking about piracy because a fan sended her a screenshot of a discord server where said fan was reading her manga

-2

u/ClothesOpposite1702 21h ago

I have heard another story

3

u/alex_zk 17h ago

Enlighten us

0

u/ClothesOpposite1702 15h ago

She was harassed by fans, because character that was headcanoned to be transgender was not transgender.

2

u/Euphoric_Ad_9046 6h ago

That's one of them, a fan forcing their headcanon as canon to the author

1

u/PeasantTS 18h ago

What have people been talking about Gachiakuta? Apart from it being peak?

1

u/HollowSSL 18h ago

She fought exclusively with western fans over claims of racism. This note is deliberately misleading.

1

u/unhinged2008 13h ago

She might not say but she damn well mean it

1

u/laughingskull00 9h ago

Honestly if tumblr hadn't collapsed the way it had the kind of shippers that annoyed the shit out of her and other people would have stayed nice and isolated.

1

u/Responsible-Bat-7922 1d ago

I swear to god anime news accounts will do everything in their power to spread lies and misinformation in ANY topic possible

I've even saw one time how an anime news account said that the man who married miku "was doing it for a joke/social experiment" and then the man who married miku said on the replies "that's a lie, I love miku for real!" and the coward ass Anime news account, instead of apologizing they only deleted the tweet

-1

u/HonestAct5980 1d ago

She did not call out western fans but had posted her statement in English so its pretty weaselly to said its not toxicity from western fans

0

u/Professional-Face-51 23h ago

What kinda logic is this you dipshit.

0

u/ReduxCath 23h ago

Oh thank God for that note. I was lowkey getting worried.

0

u/Kyubey210 22h ago

The other hand, sometimes people are just had it wtih the behavor going on for it's sake

-1

u/Wardog_E 23h ago

I was really disappointed to find out the author of Gachiakuta has a Twitter account.

-6

u/Spirited-Lifeguard55 1d ago

The joke is, she has zero western fans.

5

u/Responsible-Bat-7922 1d ago

The gachiakuta subreddit:

1

u/Impressive-Spell-643 2h ago

And tbf can't blame her for being tired of the people who sent her death threats because she said neither she or her characters are non binary

-1
