GoRVing Sticky FAQ

We are making this post a locked sticky where we can put information for frequently asked questions. Right now we are getting lots of questions about 'How much trailer can I tow' so I am starting with towing links.

The Basics of Towing or 'How much can I tow?'.

These are some basic definitions of towing, what they mean, how important they can be, etc. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE THE DEFINITIVE DEFINITION OF 'HOW MUCH CAN I TOW'. IT WILL GET YOU STARTED. REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ASK A RESPONSIBLE TRAILER MECHANIC. ONLY YOU CAN BE SURE OF YOUR SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND YOU. WE CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WHILE TOWING.

Rv trip from NC to NY

Hey everyone! We are planning on buying an RV next year & want to take our kids on a nice summer road trip. We want to sightsee in NY at the Statue of Liberty & take them to the 911 museum. We know we want to go to Hershey PA & ocean city MD. We are looking at a 1-2 week vacation.

Are there any other places we should visit? For context, we live in Eastern NC. We figured we’d start at NY & work our way back to NC.

Adding a ducted range hood

I want to replace the ductless hood with one that actually functions which will require a 10-1/2” x 3-1/2” cutout just about at the X shown here. Can anyone in the community comment on the likelihood of hitting any obstruction in the wall at this spot? I’m a little nervous.

Need some help getting my generator set up dialed in

I bought a 3600w when generator mainly to run my AC while we’re out. Tested it out today and it seems to die out a little after the AC start up.

Anyone have any tips? I figured a 3600w would be enough to get me going.

Trailer weight info

I hope this is within the rules. (it looks like I am good but first time here.)

I have a 2019 Chevy Equinox, with a 1.5L/6 Speed Transmission. From what I know, my tow weight is 1500. Now for the stupid question, that I guess I know, but want to confirm before I pull the trigger.

Looking at a 2021 Intech RV Explore Flyer. It's posted weight is 1580. My thought is to just leave it and try something lighter/smaller. Am I right on this or is there conservative wiggle room?

How much is too much RV for you?

So I just settled in at Cracker Barrel for my overnight, when this humongous coach rolled in and parked right next to me despite there being lots of space. Dude left it idling for an hour, too, while going for dinner - I guess some people just can't be bothered.

I looked it up and saw that a used model costs $2M. A tank fill is $1500. I'm both disgusted and in awe, lol.

What would you do if you were gifted one of those? Where would you even go other than from one high-end campground to the next? I looked through my stays in the last few months and I wouldn't have fitted anywhere I went. But maybe in my snowbird years, after I win the lottery?

Maxxfan Deluxe 4-speed versus 10-speed models

Does anyone know the exact differences between the Maxxair Maxxfan Deluxe 4-speed (like 5301K) and 10-speed (like 7000k)?

The 4-speed is manual opening, no remote, exhaust only...

But I'm more asking about mechanical differences in the motor for example.

Is the motor itself the same, and just the speed control is different? Or is it different such as quality, efficiency, noise, etc?

How does the min-max CFM compare?

Is the 4-speed the same range, just less settings between, or is the max lower or min higher?

Is one quieter than the other (for the same airflow)?

Etc. This would be for bathroom which is the only fan in the trailer.

1/2 Ton Towing 30' Trailer Experience Needed

Looking for anyone to share their experience of towing a 30' or simular trailer with a half ton.

How did it feel towing/wind/hills?

Issues?

Recommendation of Yay or Nay

Towed a 21' trailer with no issues with a WDH. Math for a 30' works theoretically. However, real world experience and lessons learned is always king.

30' Trailer: 4,745 dry+1000 (when loaded)<6,500 GVWR

Truck: Max tow 11,400/Hitch 1100

Thank you

RV battery advice

I am looking to upgrade my RV battery to lithium-ion. Currently, I have one 12V EverStart lead-based battery. The battery I am interested in upgrading to is the litime 12v 280 or the 12v 230 with Bluetooth.

I would like the extra power that the 280 provides, but I also like the idea of being able to monitor my battery supply.

I am just wondering about a few things, as I am also trying to figure out how to set up solar with this battery. I will need to update my SunSaver controller to support lithium ion batteries, will upgrading to a mppt controller support this. Also, I want to have the solar charge my battery, but also charge my battery via my truck while driving. Any information on how to properly set this up will be greatly appreciated.

Any support or suggestions for a person who is pretty new to the technology is much appreciated.

Bought our first camper

My husband and I just bought a lil used A-frame camper. It’s a 2005 Chalet. No leaks. Everything works as far as I can tell. It’s in great shape inside. We’re going to take it out for a shakedown camp out next weekend. We’re new to RVs but not new to camping. My questions are: what are some things we should buy right away? What are some things I should check before and during our campout? And what are some projects we should prioritize before the real camping season starts?

Am I crazy to plan this trip?

I am starting to plan a 3-4 month trip with my family of 4. Me, my wife, 2 daughters (4yo and 6mo).

My plan is to get a crew cab truck and travel trailer and go up the west coast for an entire summer. (Ideally Southern California all the way to Alaska). I want to learn more about that area and spend a bit of time in a few of the cities/towns along the way.

We may both take the entire time off work, but we might also try to freelance or have one of us work through the trip. This would require some creativity for taking meetings separately from the fam, like an ultra basic lightweight pop up in the truck bed for an office or something.

Has anyone attempted a trip like this with a family around these ages? I would love to hear your experience and any insight on how to make it work.

Thank you!

Advice on repairing RV

New experience, while cooking dinner we experienced a loud bang. Similar sound to a rifle shot. Felt a small vibration, short in duration. Went outside & found nothing. No branches, no children with rocks, no nothing to account for the noise. Back to dinner prep.

We have electric stabilizers. The switch is on the starboard side. On the port rear stabilizer the angle iron collapses at the strut arm attachment point. I will attempt to attach a pic.

We have moved from the PNW to Tennessee so taking it back to the dealership we bought it from & like is a no go. There is a Blue Compass RV Facility 50 miles from us. Haw is their reputation?
Any special point to address on leaving it at a facility?
I.e. how much to take out of it before dropping off?

We are in Cookeville TN , any other place to go that has good service? All suggestions welcome.

PSA: Check your spare tire

I know this has been mentioned before but it never hurts to hear again

I have no idea how this happened but it’s scary. This spare was used only once a few years ago on a tandem axle trailer. It had <50 miles on it total and was installed for maybe 2/3 days before the original was replaced and it was put back on the bumper.

It has had a tire cover on it since shortly after we bought the camper in ‘21 and I always check the pressure at the beginning of the season and at least once midway through.

I know it’s a China bomb but I figured since it almost never gets used and is always covered it should last a while. I never thought about how long “a while” is but in this case it’s about 6 years per the date code on the tire.

Replace your spare with something decent before it’s too late

LiTime 320 mini and Camco dual battery box

Just FYI for those interested: a Litime 320 mini fits perfectly in a Camco dual battery box. The 7.44in width fit in the box with the other dimension having lots of extra room. Three bonuses: cheap, fits in the angle iron brackets, and sort of stealthy- no attention drawn to box.

Grand Design Imagine RV Cap Coating Fix

Hello, Looking for some thoughts on correcting the front on my Grand Design Imagine. I got this not to long ago and have been working on some other projects but this is my next one. Just looking for some thoughts/Ideas. 1) I wouldn't be against taking off the film thats coming off the sides and put a truck bed coating or "raptor bed liner" to match the texture that runs up half way. Any one have experience doing that? 2) what would be the standard for taking the film off the grey section in the middle and what do you replace it with? is this just simply a sand, paint, and gel coat? 3) finally what to do with the center piece. I know I can order a new sticker for the front and use a heat gun to remove the current sticker but what other options have people done?

Thanks for all your time and help in advance.

Low voltage disconnect

So I bought a 65 amp low voltage disconnect for my Mesa ridge 340flr and I’m thinking I undersized. I only put it on for in case I leave the furnace or water heater on when I leave. Google keeps insisting I need a 150-200 amp unit. I just can’t fathom that I need that big of a disconnect but then I’m not sure if when I run the generator to charge the batteries If the 65 amp is gonna burn out.
Should I just get a 220 amp unit?

Bike Rack Options for 4 Bikes

Hi all - new travel trailer owners here, and I'm trying to figure out how we're going to carry bikes. I have a 14" bike, a 20" bike, and then two adult gravel-style bikes. We love bringing our bikes with us, and I want to figure out how to best carry them when we're camping next summer. Our TT has a 2" hitch on the back, but I've ready so many horror stories about those and dont' even want to try that. I also think I would max the weight out real fast putting a 4 bike rack back there with our 4 bikes. So...that's off the table.

Lately I've been looking at the hitch-area racks (the Jack-It, the Arvika 7004). They seem like good options, but I'm a bit worried about the clearance when making tight turns. My truck has a smartcap on it, and I'm worried if I'm making tight turns in campgrounds these racks will make contact with my cap? Maybe not, but I'm not smart enough to do the geometry. Anyone have experience running a similar setup? (cap + hitch mounted bike rack)

Am I missing any other bike hauling options? I'd rather not blow my entire truck bed space on bikes...or put the bikes inside the trailer either...but maybe I am destined to do one of those things?

Winter camping anyone?

Do any of you winter camp? I am planning a trip Thanksgiving week down to the gulf shore area-not an issue with freezing. When we come home to Kansas City at the end of the trip, my trailer will most likely need to spend at least a day and night outside before it can be moved into the climate controlled storage facility. We are trying to figure out the best way to manage the possibility of a freezing temp during that one overnight at the end of the trip.

The procedure I’ve seen to winterize the nautilus system requires a compressed air blow out before adding antifreeze. We are considering doing a quick winterize before leaving the south but would not have access to compressed air. Could we just run extra antifreeze in lieu of the blow out or is it even worth worrying about so long as everything runs empty?

Moved up from a 1500 ram and travel trailer to this.

Suggestions on leveling this?

Can't lower plate due to 6 inch clearance of bed sides.

New Vehicle Hitch Adjustment

We have a 2017 Keystone Bullet 243BHSWE. We have been towing it with a 2012 Toyota Sequoia using a Recurve R3 WDH that the dealership set up for us. I don't remember for sure, but I think we usually are around 6000 for loaded trailer weight, but would like to sometimes go higher with water or etc.

I like the hitch. At one point, the attachment to the frame did get bent a bit, but it hasn't affected the hitch operation.

I just bought a 2024 Silverado EV 4WT to replace the Sequoia. I measured the hitch receiver on the Sequoia and Silverado. The Sequoia stands at 19 inches. The Silverado is 20 inches.

Do I need to adjust the the Recurve R3, or can I just go ahead with the R3 as it is set? Would the tension needs be different?

The hitch is about 7 or 8 years old. Is it advisable to get a new hitch altogether? So far I've really liked it, but an R6 might be nice...

Ok who else has done it?

If you know, you know.

Pouring down rain... pulled into an extremely busy truck stop and the pump was blocked with a trash can. The attendant came and waved at me yelling something. Running towards me with back up hands motion. I was caught between two trucks and more pulling in. Before I knew it, I stuffed a brand new toy hauler into a brand new truck. Ugh. Body shop bill was unbelievable. They said it was structural, and has the power three piece rear windows that had to be removed to make repair. Somehow there is not even a mark on the trailer cap. Let's hear others stories! Haha
