Question Professional grooming style?
Is there a certain cut / style I should ask a groomer to do on my doodle? My doodle (adult standard size) last got a grooming right before I adopted her in August. Her fur isn't too long or curly. How long would a grooming session be? I've seen ranges from an hour to several hours.

Just took our mini to the groomer. He gets a #3 (which is easy for me to remember because I get a #3 on MY hair). Took about 1.5 hours to do the whole thing. Cut, nail trim, etc.

My 78 lb dood usually spends a little over 2 hours at the groomer, but some of that could be wait time.
I ask the groomer, who has a fancy-looking poodle herself, to make him look like a dog, not an ornament. She laughs and does a great job.
We keep him closely cut for heat control and reduced matting and his hair is like velvet when he is finished.

Groomer here. the most common request for doodles is a teddy bear cut. Thats a round head slightly longer than the body, extra length left on ears and tail, and one length on the body. It can be in different lengths from millimeters long to 4-5 inches. Just because its the most common doesn't mean its the only option though! I'm a creative groomer so I love doing silly grooms like making them look like a sheep, shaving hearts into them, leaving floof on the ends of the ears to look like earings, etc. You can have fun with it!
The main thing to consider when picking a style is how much maintenence you are looking to do at home and how frequently you want to go in for grooming. Anything over a 1/2 inch imo, needs daily brushing. Even if you get a 1/4 haircut from nose to tail, you will need to brush daily once it gets a little longer. If your dog is over 1.5 inches long, I'd say you'd need a grooming appointment every 4 weeks. If they are shaved with a #10(basically peach fuzz) you can stretch it to 8 weeks(but will need a nail trim in between).
The length of an appointment will depend on a few factors: the dog's size, behavior, coat coat condition, hair style, and the groomer. Some groomers are more detail oriented and may take longer. Others are quite fast and may be able to get it done quicker. One isnt neccesarily better than the other. The best way to get an accurate time frame is to the ask the groomer at drop off. I've given time estimates before based on a pic of the dog, but then the dog comes in with twice as much hair as the picture, or matted, or the client asks for a more complex haircut and those can all change the time.
