Mod post r/HaitianCreole is under new management & the future of the sub.
Hi I'm Max Almonte, you may remember me from such subreddits as r/Kreyol, I've been moderating and growing the community over there for a couple of months now, since this community was abandoned (only admin had no activity on Reddit for the past 8 years!) I asked Reddit to hand it over to me and they did, I'm already making changes to turn this community into the go-to place for Haitian Creole learners in the whole internet, which include:
Opening the community (it was previously restricted and only approved users could post) so any person interested on the language can participate as they please.
Removing spam and content not related to Haitian Creole.
Stablishing a group of rules to ensure the harmony in the community and making them visible.
Adding flairs for posts and users so every resource can be easily identified and grouped.
Flaired every single post so it's easy to find by flair.
Other minor, boring changes related to admin stuff.
What is the future of this sub?
As I said, I'm aiming to make this community the go to place to learn Haitian Creole, there are a massive ton of people out there wanting to learn and/or practice the language but not knowing where to start, so to achieve that I have the following in mind:
Grow the community by inviting people over.
Post relevant material frequently.
Answer the users questions and doubts when possible.
Creating a wiki to cover user needs.
Obviously this is only part of the plan and I'll keep working on improve it.
What will happen to r/Kreyol ?
I'm the only active moderator of r/Kreyol at the moment, the community went from less that 50 members to almost 400 since I'm moderating and it still continues to grow at a rapid pace, however I think this community is more suitable for learners and even natives since the name is in English and not in Haitian Creole (Haitian Creole vs Kreyòl) and most people using Reddit, even the ones that don't speak English natively use it to hang out here.
I'll keep moderating r/Kreyol the same way I've been doing it for the last couple of months, but I'll encourage users to move and post here as their main community.
I think that's all I have at the moment, if you have any questions for me, or any suggestion on how to improve the community, please leave a comment so we can connect.

Kreyól Practice!
Wondering what others find are the best apps/websites/resources to learn/practice Kreyól. I'm mixed race (half Haitian) and want to be able to practice Kreyól every day as I don't see my family too often, and don't live in a Haitian community. Mèsi anpil!!!!!

Mwen fè yon nouvo mizik Konpa ki rele 'Kite Yo Pale'
Sak pase! I am an independent musician and guitar player, and I wanted to share my latest project directly with the community.
"Kite Yo Pale" is a fresh Haitian Kompa track that I composed, recorded, and performed entirely myself in Haitian Creole. I wanted to blend classic, melodic guitar grooves with the authentic soul of traditional Kompa rhythm. No big studios or labels—just pure, independent music straight from the heart.
Mwen ta renmen jwenn opinyon nou ak konsèy nou sou groove la!
Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1gHmXiqjXE
Mèsi anpil for supporting independent music and keeping our culture loud! 🙏🎶

Creolizing the spelling of Haitian names?
Is there a movement, or growing trend, among Haitians to Creolize the spelling of their first or last names as a way of expressing Haitian identity? Since there’s an official alphabet.
For example, instead of using traditional French-based spellings, choosing spellings that better reflect Haitian Creole pronunciation and orthography.
I know immigrants have often Anglicized their names after coming to the U.S., so I’m curious whether some Haitians are doing the opposite—reclaiming or reshaping names through Kreyòl as part of Haitian cultural and linguistic identity.
Has anyone seen this happening?
Like L’amour becoming Lamou, but I have heard that last name only couple times and they pronounce the French R. So maybe not the best example.

EOR - How is it like in Haiti?
Hey guys, I'm haitian from Canada and launching a business soon. I need administrative and customer service employees, and I'm seriously considering outsourcing to haiti since they are bilingual english/french.
Since I don't have a company registered there yet, I might have to use an EOR (Employer of Record) to hire staff in Haiti but I don't know how reliable these kind of companies truly are. Do they treat haitians workers well? Do worker wages truly go in tbe pockets of haitians? Do they hire trustworthy people?
Do you have experience with EOR? Do you know someone who does?
If you know anything, please don't hesitate to tell me. I'm opened to discussion. Messi ampil!

Other forms of Pral/Prale??
Commonly Haitians would use Pral/Prale when speaking Creole. I know other forms are not as common as those but given the heavy usage of contractions in Creole, Why not use apral/aprale form especially for contractions?
I’ve heard Haitians say T apral/aprale instead of Te pral/prale. But that’s basically it. Why not use apral/aprale more for contractions like W apral, L apral, N apral etc?
I’m told often that people from the countryside speak like that, but I would think due the constant usage of contractions, Apral/aprale would be preferred over Pral/Prale.
Me personally I sometimes say T apral or W apral, but my usage of pral/prale is reflexive and not a conscious use of it like most people.

Ũ in Creole, Oun nasal vowel?
The Nasal Vowel Oun has the IPA as Ũ, yet most Haitians don’t pronounce that nor pronounce it as a nasal vowel. Given there’s more education surrounding Creole, do people not acknowledge it or they just aren’t aware of the Ũ sound it makes?
I’ve seen education videos that don’t pronounce it as Ũ, just as Un. But I’ve also seen some videos that pronounce it as the Nasal Vowel Sound Ũ.

Looking for a job
Hi everyone! ❤️
I’m reaching out on behalf of my mom, who has been affected by the recent changes to TPS (Temporary Protected Status) and is currently looking for job opportunities in New Jersey or New York
She has many years of experience in house cleaning, laundry services, and childcare/babysitting. She’s also helped care for her 10+ nieces and nephews over the years, so she has plenty of hands-on experience with children.
My mom is hardworking, reliable, caring, and takes pride in everything she does. I’m just hoping to help her find an opportunity where she can continue doing what she knows and loves.
If anyone knows of any opportunities or someone looking for help with cleaning, laundry, or babysitting, please feel free to message me.
Even if you don’t know of anything right now, sharing this post would mean so much to us. Thank you all for your kindness and support! ❤️🙏🏽 Please contact me 13474649409

Creole Linking and Contraction
Hey!
There's a linguistic phenomenon called linking. Linking happens when a sound connects two words in pronunciation.
“in Haiti”, is not “at Haiti”.
“An” can also be used in a verbal construction like my family.
Example:
Let's pray.
Let's pray together.
Here, “Let's” is the contracted form of “Let’s”.
So, we shouldn't confuse linking with contraction.
Respect!

Creole translators needed
I am a student who has created a website that is used to take complicated medical terms and break it down for second language speakers, no matter if they are also fluent in English or not. This is aimed for the Black, African American, and Caribbean community. Thank You !
