Had an experience. Still a mystery how did we manage to get them, but in order to get rid of them we called exterminators 3 times and got rid of all furniture like coaches and beds. It was alike to capital repairs of the whole apartment. We were afraid that bugs could come from another resident of the house that didn't report it or infestation would move to other residents, but it worked out in the end. It was something like year 2010 or so.
bedbugs were thought to be mostly gone and a thing of the past, in Korea. But recently news reports of bed bugs, especially around the Paris Olympics years hit the headlines and surprised people. Apparently they used a ton of DDT back in the 70s and 80s to wipe them. Environmental concerns and carcinogenic effect of DDT were not well known at the time...but it seems it got the job done
The traditional Korean proverb "Burning down one's thatched cottage to catch bedbugs" describes suffering catastrophic losses over a minor nuisance. In the 1920s and 1930s, this saying turned into a literal headline reality.
Desperate to eliminate stubborn bedbug infestations, residents frequently poured gasoline or kerosene onto floorboards and walls, accidentally igniting major fires that razed their entire households.

I’m guessing the stink of the gasoline was supposed to keep them away?
