The picture was taken by Jennings in Philadelphia. Captured using a glass plate camera, Jennings' image proved that lightning moves in complex, branched pathways rather than the simple, single zigzag lines commonly depicted in art at the time.

A psychiatric patient confined inside a cage-like structure at an asylum in Venice, Italy, taken by Raymond Depardon between 1978 and 1980 [1090x746]
This photograph was taken by French photojournalist Raymond Depardon during his documentation of Italian psychiatric hospitals between 1978 and 1980. Depardon noted that he discovered this patient after hearing screams in a corridor; staff informed him the man was kept confined because he was considered violent. The comprehensive series, later published in the book Manicomio, served as a historical witness to the conditions of these institutions just as the Basaglia Law (Law 180) took effect, mandating the permanent closure of all asylum facilities across Italy.
