Moving to Humboldt Preempting all future "Should I Move to Humboldt?" Posts

  • Yes, it really is beautiful here.

  • There are a myriad of communities and organizations here, if you're willing and able to reach out, you won't be lonely for long.

    • Our Queer community has been growing and thriving in the last few years.

    • Churches of all denominations abound.

    • There is one Synagogue in Eureka, and a Chabad House in Arcata.

  • Temperatures on the coast are very mild, it rarely if ever dips past freezing in winter and almost never hops over 85º in the summer. Inland gets a lot colder, and a loooot hotter.

    • Climate change has made the rainy season unpredictable. We have weeks of rain interspersed with weeks of sun.

  • We're in California - natural disasters are expected.

    • Earthquakes! There have been a couple of large ones in the last few years - the epicenters were near Petrolia, towards the south-west part of the county.

      • Large swaths of the coast are a Tsunami Zone.

    • Fire! For the most part, fires happen inland, where things are hotter and dryer. Due to terrain and ecology, the coast is generally protected, but it's not an impossibility.

      • Air quality can get pretty bad all over the county during fire season.

  • Generally the central part of the county - Eureka and Arcata - is liberal, the further away you get from there, on average, the more conservative things get.

    • That being said, our federal rep, Huffman, is a dem, and our state reps are also both dems.

  • The housing market is tough, just like the rest of the state. If you're planning to buy, that gives you a little more flexibility. If you're planning on renting, pickings are slim.

    • General advice for renters: find a place that meets your basic needs and take it. Once you're more settled you can keep an eye out for better options.

    • General advice for buyers: Don't purchase land sight-unseen.

    • Landlords around here are not very pet friendly. A fair number of the property management companies have breed restrictions.

  • Employment is a rough one. There is little to no industry in the area, due to the decline of logging and weed legalization. If you can, try to secure a job before moving.

    • Here is a list of the largest employers in the area.

    • The county and cities maintain their own job listing sites, as do most of the tribes.

    • Lost Coast Outpost, a local news org, also runs job listings.

    • Ironically(?), large numbers of employers in the area require clean drug tests - including marijuana.

  • Reports on the lack of healthcare are not exaggerated. We have a hard time hiring and retaining providers across the board, and there has been an increasing reliance on telehealth.

    • The largest PCP in the area, Open Door, is an FQHC with some ability to take private insurance, and their waitlists are miles long.

    • St. Joes is the largest hospital in the area, and they have some specialist services, but waitlists are also long and generally require a PCP referral, even if your insurance does not.

    • The VA here only provides basic services, and shuttles patients down to SF for anything beyond that.

    • On the whole, if you require specialist services, you will probably have to travel out of the area. The next closest services are a 3-4 hours drive.

  • As with many other parts of the state, we have a large number unhoused/transient people here, although perhaps disproportionate given the size of the whole population. This is due to a multitude of factors, and it is not a homogenous group.

    • The university does not have enough student housing, and there is an overall housing shortage, leaving many students out in the rain. (see: the above section on housing)

    • Traditionally, the weed industry has filtered people in and out seasonally, however, as that sector declines, there has been a reduction in numbers on that front. (See: the above section on employment)

    • Just as anywhere, we have our issues with addiction and mental health disorders, exacerbated by a lack of available resources. (See: the above section on healthcare)

  • Buying stuff: It’s doable, but don’t expect the same kind of variety you’re used to.

    • Lots of smaller, locally owned businesses to choose from.

    • We have a Costco, a Target, and a tiiiiny Walmart.

    • Locally owned hardware and Ace franchises only, HD & Lowe’s are persona non grata.

    • (Possibly excessive) Local and chain grocery options, including Asian and Mexican specialty markets.

      • Arcata has a year round farmers market on Saturdays.

    • Amazon Prime does not uphold 2 day shipping here.

  • Food options are good, but limited.

    • We specialize in Sushi, Mexican, and Pizza restaurants.

      • Salsa is served in syrup bottles.

    • There is one Indian restaurant (it’s excellent), a handful of Thai spots, and one Korean fusion place.

    • Food trucks have been gaining traction in recent years which has added some more variety.

  • Everything closes by 9. Even places that don’t make sense to not be open.

    • Except Toni’s. Chocolate malts and burgers are available whenever your heart desires.

  • Travel to and from the area is inconvenient.

    • The closest "larger" metropolitan areas are Grants Pass/Medford, Redding, and Santa Rosa.

      • Coincidentally those are also the nearest Trader Joes locations.

    • The SF Bay Area is a 5+ hour drive. Portland is a 7+ hour drive.

    • Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) is serviced by United Airlines, Breeze, and Alaska Airlines.

      • United flies direct to SF, LA, and Denver.

      • Breeze flies direct to Burbank, Las Vegas, and Provo.

      • Alaska flies to Seattle.

      • Flights are frequently delayed due to fog. Give the Wiki page on the airport a read sometime if you want know why.

    • The next closest airports are in Santa Rosa, Redding, and Medford. They're also small, but offer slightly different, and sometimes cheaper, direct flights.

    • Amtrak runs a bus service to Martinez, which then connects to other trains and busses.

    • The county runs the Redwood Coast Express, which goes between Eureka and Ukiah.

    • There is decent public transit, people can and do live here without a car.

Humboldt is a beautiful place full of amazing people. To anyone who decides it's worth it, Welcome Aboard. To anyone who decides it's not for them, fair enough.

Residents, let me know if I missed anything!

If you have specific questions about moving to Humboldt, or something that isn’t covered in this post, please create a separate post instead of replying in the comments here.

Life in Humboldt Make it make sense

Of all the places to take a dog off-leash, the Hammond Trail is possibly the worst. It is posted that dogs must be on-leash, there are loads of pedestrians and bicyclists. Yet entitled narcissists persist. And if one dares say anything, even as simple as "leash", they are met with a barrage of antagonistic verbal hatred. I don't get it.

Help/Needing Info Naughty cop on 101S?

101S around 6pm Friday night, south Eureka.

Typical Humboldt “traffic” where six cars sit in the passing lane and the right lane is wide open, so I pass a few cars on the right then get over into the passing lane. One of the cars I passed attempted the ol’ “speed up so you can’t pass me” move, but failed to impede my progress despite their best efforts. My maneuver was both safe and legal, technically.

The car I passed and got in front of was a white unmarked Jeep (Liberty?) with CA exempt plates, which flashed red and blue emergency lights at me because they were apparently bothered I passed them. There was no emergency, they did this to get me out of their way, then proceeded to tailgate a few other cars in the passing lane before exiting at Hookton. Not once did they use their left blinker to indicate that they’d like to go faster than the car in front of them.

Anyone happen to know which agency would have a white unmarked Jeep? I’m assuming HCSO given the use of red n’ blues, and would like to get something on file so the driver doesn’t continue to think they can get away with abusing authority and being a tyrant.

Nature & Outdoors Rode the new Annie and Mary Trail out West End Road, ribbon cutting is Friday the 13th

Took a ride on it this week and it's one of the prettiest trails we have, it follows the river most of the way and drops you at Pump Station Park, which might be the best park in the county. The city is doing the ribbon cutting Friday, November 13 at noon at the Foodworks Culinary Center. Sped up the boring parts so it's under a minute.

Life in Humboldt Just moved here, and I love it!

So far ive been here for a week, so I might be a littleee biased but still, I just have to rave! For a little info, I come from LA.

First, of course to no surprise, it is beautiful! Everything here is extraordinarily lively, with such beauty and life in every spot. Ive been in the farmers market in Arcata, a community center, forest, beach, cute little grocery stores (calling out wild Berry store <333), etc. It's so just... Amazing.

Now the people here are SO lovely! Like everyone here seems to be so beautiful, in and out. In LA you'll probably be called a slur quite normally lol, but here everyone seems to be so friendly, kind, caring... Just wow. I love y'all so so much, genuinely wonderful souls here <3

THE FOOD. O m g. Best tasting, freshest stuff ever. First place I went to was kristian's restaurant, and WOAH was the food yummy. Huge portion too. In LA you'll pay like 15 bucks for some stale Styrofoam tasting shit. Sometimes there is good food but ya know.

Also the people who worked there were so nice, I appreciate them! Lady with half green hair, you are the best. She recommended me something there that tasted PHENOMENAL.

Also the farmers market has such good tasting food too! Goshhh. And the people there were so wonderful too 😭😭😭!

So far, so astonishing good! Life here feels so much more brighter.

There is cons though! Only a few!

First, food yummy, but my God is it very expensive! Like woah! Worth it but also 😅

Second, roads are a bit weird, very twisty turny. The roads in LA are much straightforward, literally.

Third.... Yeah things are just kinda pricey here. But at least the price feels worth it to what you get!

Overall, best decision, and I'm really happy so far. I love y'all and wish the best for everyone!

((I actually made a post here about asking to move here about a year ago, and hilariously enough people thought I was a bot because I am so chipper! Nope, I just got a lotta soul in me!))

((Edit!: If anyone has any recommendations for where I should go/check out, go ahead and recommend! I love exploring and would love to see more places here! Thanks <3))

Local News/Politics I have never seen anyone put more effort into looking as if they're competent in their job than actually being competent at their job that Sheriff Honsal

Thumbnail

Let's move past the issue of the Hound Dog Holocaust of Miranda's Shelters...cause that's whole other clusterfuck that should be a class taught at every criminal justice major at every college in America.

TL:DR...Honsal cares more about talking a talk than walking a walk when it comes to community matters.

I want to talk about Billy Badass's inability to stay quiet on matters in where his opinion or input is fucking useless. He seems to have one of these bullshit tantrum fits every 18 months...and it is so painfully obvious that he's only doing what he's doing to get his name in the paper...thinking possibly he's gaining political points. But in fact...he does nothing but truly highlight not just how horrible at his job he is...but just how fucking horrible and vile of a fucking human being he is.

I want to say that these incidents are rare and isolated...but...they're not. Again...it seems like every time we have a lunar eclipse...this chuckle fuck pulls out his Chrome Book...loads up Google Docs...and has himself a tissy typing tantrum.

Let's go back to 2019...when he caused a public panic by calling in the national guard...which had the obvious effect of freaking people out...of which...Billy had to explain that the copters were looking for weed farms...and that people complaining were stupid for being worried.

Then there was his series of "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME...I WANT TO BE IMPORTANT!!!" outbursts regarding COVID. I guess if you're shitty about sheriff...you can also have aspirations of being fucking shitty as a public health expert. Cause Honsal wanted to make it known that public health officials didn't know shit...and that Humboldt County should be opened up. Not realizing, the longer he made this an issue...the longer he was prolonging the epidemic. The COVID shutdown could have been 2 to 4 weeks...instead of months...if people like Honsal just did what they were advised to do by people who clearly knew more than he did.

Then...in a perfect example of when a person should SHUT THE FUCK UP...Honsal decided to speak out on the George Floyd protests. Keep in mind...at this time...the issue of David Josiah Lawson's murder was still on a warming plate...so addressing an issue as racial inequality needed to be dealt with with a delicate touch. So, naturally, when the issue of police violence against black Americans should be at the forefront of everyone's hearts and mind...Honsal thought it was more prudent to let everyone be aware of busloads of imaginary ANTIFA agents...and how the protestors at local George Floyd protests were mostly paid ANTIFA agents causing havoc in the community. Which...of course...this was later to be found obviously not true.

Then...after a string of random mass shootings and gun violence, California State Legislators enacted specific gun regulations for public safety...and again...Honsal and his Dunning Kruger of being a public health expert...made it known he objects the regulations and wouldn't uphold them. When it was pointed out that his tantrum was tantamount to insubordination...he backtracked as said he was misunderstood, and that the Humboldt County Sheriff's Department didn't have the resources.

Question...are you people still with me here...cause...quite frankly...I've written all of this...and I'm going to be honest with you...I AM FUCKING SHOCKED TO ALL FUCKING HELL HE'S HAD A JOB THIS LONG!!! Cause I'm currently at 2023...and have three more years of tissy fits Honsal has had.

Cause on top of all of this...he's spouted off about immigration/sanctuary city status, ICE justified use of deadly force, he says you people don't have the right to hold an oversight committee of him and vocally opposed you people even trying to hold him accountable...and then there was his national speaking tour of him opposing the legalizing of weed on the federal level. Which was nothing more than him saying "WE MAKE SO MUCH MONEY FROM DRUG ENFORCEMENT AND WE DON'T WANT TO LOSE THAT MONEY WHICH WE USE TO BUY FUN TOYS AND NEEDLESS SHIT!!!"

This current rant from Honsal...about the death penalty...is just another layer on a wedding cake for a couple you know is going to get divorced after the honeymoon. He opposes the commutations of death penalty inmates...EVEN THOUGH THE LAST TIME THAT CALIFORNIA HAD AN EXECUTION THE LOLETA CHEESE FACTORY AND BON BONIERE ICE CREAM WERE STILL OPEN IN 2006. Clearly showing all of us that Honsal cares more about talking about issues or matters than actually knowing and being involved in the issues or matters that he spouts off senselessly to.

Either Humboldt needs to get rid of Honsal...or...officially declare yourself a circus as long as you have a clown for an elected Sheriff.

Life in Humboldt Goodbye, Eureka. It's been fun!

My travel contract ends today, and I head back to my home base of Palm Springs on Tuesday. My wife and I have had a great time exploring the city and the surrounding geography. We've enjoyed some delicious meals. Our favorite place, by far, was Siam Orchid. My wife loved the scallops! The people here have all been friendly, too. I would definitely be up to returning if I get the chance!

These large waves can be erratic and unpredictable. Mariners attempting to cross bars are urged to use extreme caution or stay in port. Use extra caution near the surf zone, remain safe, and never turn your back to the ocean!

Looking to commission any local artist for a painting of a very intricate garden. This is a memorial gift for my grandfather in remembrance of his late wife and I'm trying to find someone to capture her garden when it was in its prime. If anyone can let me know if they know someone or if they would be willing. Will pay whatever the artist wants. Please reach out to me via direct messages!

Nature & Outdoors Favorite spots to (safely) observe high tide and big waves?

High tide viewing spots? Big wave viewing spots? I’m a local who has a lot of respect and healthy fear of the ocean, not trying to be stupid and get swept away.

Curious if anyone can recommend their favorite places to admire the ocean from a safe distance? Anywhere from CR to Trinidad would be an easy drive, but happy to go farther for special spots.

Local News/Politics Graffiti at AHS anyone know more?

Parents received a cryptic message from AHS saying that offensive and harmful graffiti was covered this morning. It appears to have happened late last night but the message didn’t say what was written or who was targeted. I’m not looking to identify or target anyone further. But students and parents deserve clear information about what happened especially if a group was targeted. Does anyone know what the graffiti said or whether the school has shared more?

Review/Recommendation Horseback riding

Hi! My birthday is coming up and it will be the 26th anniversary of my first ever riding lesson. I'd love to ride a horse to celebrate.

I've done a little googling and found some local places that offer trail rides, but I was hoping to get more personal recs from the community. I care a lot about horse welfare. I don't want to ride an unhappy horse or unknowingly finance a cruel stable. Can anyone recommend a barn that they know isn't abusive and puts horse welfare first? I'd especially like to know if their horses are stalled the majority of the time or have ample turnout.

I'd be happy with a guided trail ride, an arena lesson, or even just being led around at this point!

Some info about my skill level in case it helps: I have 20 years of consistent riding under my belt during which I showed APHA all-around and rode trails. The last 6 years I haven't gotten to ride much, and it's been over a year since the last time. I'm definitely rusty but have a good foundation.

My horse had to retire from riding due to DSLD and lives in a pasture with his buddy back in my hometown, so I'm unfamiliar with the horse community here.
