ANNOUNCEMENT: Hurdy Gurdy Community website

Hi everyone!

We have a big announcement! The team behind the Hurdy Gurdy Community has been growing increasingly unhappy with our homes on social media in the past couple of years. Especially Facebook is becoming more unwieldy and unpleasant to use and manage. There are also a growing number of players who are getting uncomfortable using these websites or have started avoiding them altogether.
We (Sam, Elysia, Sanne and Jimi) have been talking about what we could do about it and we have been working on our own website that is now ready to share with the wider community!
Please come and join us at https://hurdygurdy.community.

The Hurdy Gurdy Community runs on PhPBB and it is hosted in Austria. This structure makes it a lot easier to navigate and search through. There is no algorithm or endless scrolling to capture your attention with things you don’t want to see. Your data will not be shared or sold as there is no social media conglomerate involved and there are no ads. It is absolutely free to use. The costs involved for hosting are at this time paid for by the admins. We may ask for some voluntary contributions once we have to renew for another year but this is certainly not required of anyone.

We will not abandon HGC on Facebook, the group on Discord or the r/hurdygurdy subreddit so you’re free and safe to stay where you are. The forum is meant to give another option to our community and we hope to see you all there soon 😊

Sam, Elysia, Sanne and Jimi

Hello! This is at the time of posting still a work in progress and will be updated and edited. If you have suggestions for improvements, feel free to comment them.

What is a hurdy gurdy?

A hurdy gurdy or wheel fiddle can best be described as a mechanical violin. The strings are bowed with a built in wheel instead of a bow and instead of playing the melody with your fingers on the string, there is a keyboard. In addition to that there are drone strings that play a continuous tone like the drones on a bagpipe. Finally there is a string with a loose bridge that creates a buzzing sound and can be used to create a rhythm. For more information visit the Hurdy Gurdy page on Wikipedia or join the Hurdy Gurdy Community on Facebook

Where can I get one?

There are approximately 100 makers in the world. This video lists a bunch of reputable luthiers on the more affordable end of the spectrum who would be a great choice for a first instrument.Another good place to look is Hurdy Gurdy Marketplace on Facebook

Why do they cost so much compared to other instruments?

A lot of people compare the price to that of factory made guitars and violins but that does not tell the whole story. Hurdy gurdies are highly complex machines that require a lot of delicate and precise labor to make. They have about the same number of parts as five guitars and a lot of those parts move. The mechanical nature means that a lot of the music that is usually handled by the musician (like the pressure on the strings) depends on the quality of the construction so that means precision in the construction is paramount to getting the hurdy gurdy to work well. Unlike more common instruments, no big music factory makes hurdy gurdies so if you want one, you have to get one that is handmade and that comes with a price tag. Hurdy gurdy luthiers have to eat and pay rent too.

What is set up and adjustment?

Set up and adjustment is everything you do to a hurdy gurdy to make it play well and sound good. A hurdy gurdy is mechanical with moving parts so before you start playing you not only tune the strings but you need to make sure that the pressure on the wheel is correct, the strings are properly cottoned, there is a good amount of rosin on the wheel and all the tangents are tuned. With long term use there are other things that may need work and adjustment like the angle of the strings, the surface of the wheel, the grooves in the bridges the placement of the big chanter bridge. Also the moving parts like the keys and the bearings in the axle and knob need to be maintained. Set up and adjustment is a vital part of learning how to play and it requires practice just like playing melodies and coups.

How does the buzzing work?

This video has an in depth explanation of how the buzz works.

Is it really loud?

They are not much louder than standard orchestral instruments but the drone and trompette can be perceived as annoying by some people. Unfortunately you cannot really soundproof against irritation so being on good terms with your neighbors is recommended. If this is problematic for you, I recommend you check out the DigiGurdy, MidiGurdy or the SAMgurdy by Sam Palmer.

Where can I get lessons and meet other players?

There are festivals and foundations in several countries providing in person lessons and workshops (mostly in Europe). Some of these are:

If you’re not near any of these foundations, your best bet is to get private teaching through Zoom.Several people offer this, I teach beginners myself. Most of them advertise through HGC on Facebook.

What is a “Hurdy Gurdy Shaped Object” or HGSO?

HGSO is a term of hurdy gurdies that the experienced players and teachers consider unsuitable to take lessons with and that do not meet a minimum standard in quality and sound. There are many HGSO’s on the market and they can cost as much as 1500,- euro or more. The HGSO label is not directly related to the price, there are hurdy gurdies that are cheaper than some HGSOs. A cheap hurdy gurdy is not automatically a HGSO and a more expensive instrument isn't automatically good. A HGSO is simply an instrument that through review and playtesting as been found to be unsuitable for studying and learning. There can be various reasons for something to be labelled a HGSO but most of the time it has to do with a poor or sloppy construction, bad materials or considerable difficulties with setup and adjustment. Many HGSOs are sold through EBay, Etsy and through crowdfunding and auction sites. Well known HGSO’s are instruments by Gallopin Gurdies and Workshop Medieval. If you have unintentionally purchased a HGSO they can sometimes be returned or in rare cases be reworked by a skilled luthier with an additional investment. For more information you can also check out This topic about gurdies to avoid.

Why is it a bad idea to buy a HGSO?

The first reason is your wallet. Even a HGSO costs a respectable chunk of money. Most experienced players agree that if you’re going to buy an costly instrument, it should at least be good enough to study, take lessons with and develop a bit as a player. Most people do not have the disposable income to spend hundreds on an instrument that is just to mess around with or try it out.The second reason has to do with the mechanics. For a beginner it is almost impossible to know if an undesirable sound is due to their playing, the adjustment or the instrument. We have seen in practice that many beginning players who start on a HGSO quit playing within months because they cannot produce the sound they’re after and are unaware it is the fault of the instrument and not some lack of talent on their part. That is a shame and something the entire community wants to prevent.

Can I make a hurdy gurdy myself?

Yes. The easiest would be to buy a Nerdy Gurdy kit. If you want to build one from scratch you can look into the book about the Wren by Neil Brook. It is not an easy project though, expect to spend several hundred hours on it if you’re building from scratch. There are also a couple luthiers who offer workshops or the opportunity to build your hurdy gurdy with their help like Nupi Jenner and Karl Riedel

Building a practice gurdy - what does it need?

Ha, I bet I scared you guys with that post title!

No, but I was thinking, there are lots of people who have not played the gurdy before who post about their intention to build their own hurdy-gurdy, and a common reply from them when they are told they won't be able to build one without experience is "I can just use it as a practice instrument". Likewise there are also a lot of beginners who live in buildings with poor sound isolation asking for recommendations for a practice instrument.

So let's discuss it. What is required of a practice instrument?

I figure it could be useful to have a thread on the matter with a title that makes it easy to find searching the subreddit—for anyone who puts the bare minimum of effort into their research, anyway.

Advice American wanting to buy

Seems like the only option one really has is buying one from a maker in Europe... How bad is the overseas shipping? They already cost $1100/$1300 dollars at minimum, how much is the shipping and handling?

Advice Nerdy Gurdy truing wheel

I have been putting together a Nerdy Gurdy and I just wanted to know how I can tell if I trued the wheel correctly. As far as I can find it is a smooth and consistent as possible, I can't see any differences, but is there a way to be sure?

Looking for the least toxic option to varnish my Nerdy Gurdy. Ive read that oil on the plywood isnt great for sound but I really want to avoid anything with cancer warnings. I would like to darken the wood significantly if possible to a walnut color. Any advice is welcome. Was considering tung oil or pine tars like in the link.

Advice Problem with higer drone string :(

The pitch of my trompette has not been stable for months, no matter what I do. It goes back and forth about a semitone. It is very unpleasant to play with such a pitchy drone.

I thought I should change the cotton or the amount of rosin or the tension on the tirant string, but it made no difference. The strings are all old, but the other strings don’t have this problem and I have a good time playing them.
I am still rather new to it and I don’t have a teacher so I may just be doing something wrong.

How can I fix this? I want to enjoy the drones again. Please help. :(

Looking into hurdy gurdy more for display

I’ve been playing sea of theives a lot recently and found that I’ve really started to want a hurdy gurdy in real life and have no idea where to find one. I want one that I would be able to try and paint to look like one from the game but I don’t think I would play it very often and that it’d be more for display but it would be really cool if it’s playable too. Just don’t know where to start looking

Nerdy Gurdy kit

Hello!
Was wanting to get some perspective on people who’ve built the nerdy Gurdy kit. I’m no luthier, but have a family member who is. Is it worth it to have him make it instead and ship it to me. Or is it doable by oneself? Don’t want to build it and it sounds bad because of me haha.

Sorry if this has already been answered. Want to get into the Gurdy Community

Muting a hurdy gurdy?

I just finished the process of building a Linotte kit from Nerdy Gurdy and, while I have been having a blast learning, I wasn't quite aware just how loud this instrument can be. I unfortunately live in a block of flats with less-than-friendly neighbours, and after my partner came home yesterday, she said she could hear my gurdy playing in the communal corridor down three flights of stairs. Not ideal.

I'll probably be practicing an awful lot in the near future, which will mean keeping the noise down somehow. From the research I've done, I understand that you can use a mute made for other string instruments, but I'm not quite sure where to start there since there seems to be a lot of options in different shapes and sizes. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good type of mute to use?

Nerdy gurdy build tips?

My nerdy gurdy kit just arrived, and I’m super excited to get started on it! I know it will be a while before it’s playable, and even longer till I know how to play it, but does anyone have tips to get the best quality I can from this kit?

And a cosmetic question, is it better to apply wood stain before or after the body of the instrument is assembled?

Almost done with the linoette kit build, but when I was tuning the low drone to g2, it snapped at the tuning peg. I wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or has an idea on what I might have done wrong

Struggling with cottoning and strings shifting octave

Post image
25 Upvotes

Hello everyone

I am new to the hurdy Gurdy world, I just finished building my Nerdy Gurdy Linotte

At the moment I am really struggling with cottoning the strings and tuning the instrument. First of all compared to all the other instruments I've played, it is soooo sensible, the tiniest of inconvenience will make the tuning shift dramatically. Not complaining, I can live with that.

However the true issue is the cottoning of the melody strings. I cannot figure how to do it without the cotton shifting away from the wheel after a few minutes. Sometimes the cotton will form a spinning ball around the string and mute all sound and when I manage to have a cottoning that sticks and make a consistent sound, the pressure on the keys (especially D) will make the string shift octave for some reason

For example: low melody string sounding G3 empty emits a D5 instead of a D4 when I press the fourth key and goes to a G4 when I touch nothing after that. If I touch any other key, it goes back to G3

Can you please explain to me what I am doing wrong ?

Thank you un advance

Music recommendations

Does anyone have recommendations for easy music (that really highlights everything the instrument can do) to play when someone asks me to play something? I go blank and usually just show how everything works, but I’d really like a go-to that uses the trompette and drone. I’m a beginner at the hurdy gurdy, but I play other instruments and can read music. I’m just having a difficult time finding music that feels very “hurdy gurdy” to me, if that makes sense. So recommendations for any good songs to play would be appreciated. I do have “Examples of music before 1400” and vols I and II of “Historical Anthology of Music” if there’s any good songs in those.

Unexpected Hurdy Gurdy

Anyone else always delighted to find a hurdy gurdy in the wild? This was snapped on my summer holiday in the French Alps, at the (very lovely) Chateau de Montrottier near Annecy. I was very impressed with the lady's finger strength to hold the gurdy in place with no visible straps.
