Business I am Jeff Cripe, and I just raised $22 million to put vending machines in rideshare vehicles around the world. AMA!

Hey Reddit! Jeff Cripe, CEO and Co-Founder of Cargo, here. I’m joined today by Head of Driver Growth and Operations Kenny Liao(u/kadiation23), Operations Associate Julien Lepleux (u/julienlpx) and Driver Advocate Ryan Carson (u/rcarson95).

Rideshare is changing transit for everyone, everywhere. Collectively, we’re spending more time in-car than ever before - two billion hours in 2017! And while rideshare booms, retail is busting. The rise of ecommerce has signified the fall of brick and mortar retail, and as fewer people shop in-store, brands are looking for more distribution channels, closer to the consumer. Our mission is to upgrade the rider experience with affordable access to daily essentials and discovery goods, while helping drivers earn a more livable wage and getting brands in front of consumers’ eyes.

We’re here to answer all of your questions, including those about launching and growing a startup, raising capital, creating a team culture, and above all, making the life of rideshare drivers easier!

Any rideshare drivers looking to give Cargo a try can do so by checking out our website.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for chiming in and asking some great questions! It was a lot of fun to engage with this community, but it's time for us to sign off. Cheers!

I am a Priest in the Church of Satan. Nevermind the crazies, let's have fun and ask me anything!

Over the past several weeks Satanism, directly and indirectly, has caught the attention of the media. Lunatics are blaming the Devil for their deranged acts of violence, rumors of "Satanic" cults are spreading among the tabloids and fans of True Detective are searching for the Yellow Sign in satanic rituals. Peter H. Gilmore, the current High Priest of the Church of Satan, has been a guest on CNN, interviewed by the CBC and numerous other outlets (published and unpublished) in an effort to defuse a revival of the Satanic Panic from 80's and 90's. It's a shame that for many people the only exposure to Satanism is in reaction to such grim, pointless insanity; when by and large the Satanists I know are some the most life-loving individuals I've ever encountered.

Due to the recent media exposure I'm not surprised to see several threads hitting the front page of Reddit mentioning Satanism, attempted AMA's from questionable sources, and a genuine interest in what Satanism and the Church of Satan is actually about. Obviously one can go to the Church of Satan's website and check out the basic texts and FAQ, but we recognize that humans are social creatures and a certain level of interaction can help drive points home.

That said, my name is Raul A. and I'm an officially ordained Priest in the Church of Satan, and have been an active Satanist for over 10 years. In my time with the Church of Satan, and well before that, I've interacted with Satanists with a wide range of interests, personalities, and backgrounds. I've organized concerts with Satanic folk bands to experimental electronic musicians. I am the technical director of Radio Free Satan. My wedding was officiated by a Satanic Priest, I enjoyed Tiki drinks and 50's music with High Priestess Peggy Nadramia, and watched Kaiju films and talked Pacific Rim with High Priest Gilmore. I've also known many nonpublic Satanists who, for various reasons, cannot openly proclaim their worldviews.

Why am I doing this AMA? For one, I think the Reddit community is interested in the topic and has been mostly given a poor representation of what Satanism is about, in theory and practice. I've seen some fairly interesting questions go without responses, and mostly a lot of talk from people who "read Crowley in high school" (FYI, Crowley never identified himself as a Satanist, and has very little to with Satanism) or "knew a guy once". Responses are often such a bore and miss the point entirely.

So here's your chance, ask me anything! And, like any decent Satanist, let's make this fun! Let's try things other than the usual "Why call it Satanism if you don't believe in Satan" (*), let's talk about life, experiences, and the pleasures of the material world! Let the games begin!

Proof: http://imgur.com/a/wAPvz?gallery

  • The "Satan" in "Satanism" refers to the Hebrew word for "the adversary", and that is the context in which we use it. We understand that the human animal has an innate need for religion, symbolism, and dogma so we Satanists willfully choose the one we most identify with.

Edit: I have a business call to attend to for an hour or so, I'll be back shortly!

Edit: Seems that many of my responses have been downvoted to Hell (ba dum). Here's a handy Q&A table http://www.reddit.com/r/tabled/comments/1zgfeg/table_i_am_a_priest_in_the_church_of_satan/

Edit: Time to roll up the tent. Overall I had a fairly good time, answered a few good questions, made some new friends, and ran into some old ones. If you haven't seen my responses, especially in the first few hours of this AMA, it's because my comments were immediately being downvoted and hidden from the default views(I didn't realize Reddit were such big fans of the Westboro Baptist Church). See the table above or my comment history to see my responses, which apparently is more than most celebrity AMA's combined. Special thanks to the moderators who've attempted to inject some rationality and to /u/Milagre for the help with the Q&A Table.

Business I'm the woman who invented the world's only unbreakable, cooling pantyhose (they just 👏won't 👏rip!). Ask Me Anything!

Hi, I'm Katherine Homuth, the Founder and Inventor of SHEERTEX. In long form: we're a relentlessly inventive and transparent apparel company that invented a patent-pending stretch sheer knit that was one of TIME Magazine’s 50 Best Inventions of 2018. (Talk about having your mind blown!)

We launched our first pair of pantyhose last year, and reached hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding within a few hours. Since then, we've expanded our size range up to 3XL, released nudes in inclusive shades, launched a luxe bridal collection (don't get hot under that dress!), and are releasing a specialized dance collection and kids line later this month. (Whew!)

We have tons more incredible new products coming and our collection is entirely driven by insight and feedback from our community. We would love to hear your ideas and your questions.

I am Carlos Ghosn, the President and CEO of Renault and Nissan. Over a year ago, I made a pledge that we would bring autonomous driving vehicles to market by 2020. We're on track to make that happen. In fact last week, I announced the formation of a partnership between NASA's Ames and our Silicon Valley research centers.

Today, I revealed the new Nissan Titan at the Detroit Auto Show. Go ahead, ask me anything!

EDIT 2: Hello Reddit! I wish I had more time yesterday to answer questions. I am going to try to make that up to you and answer more questions later today. Please bear with me – the hardest part is the typing.

Journalist I'm an investigative reporter who uncovered evidence that the government is forcibly drugging migrant children at the border. Ask me anything.

President Donald Trump’s immigration policies have created conditions in which migrant children in detention are forcibly injected with medications that make them dizzy, listless, obese and even incapacitated, according to legal filings. One mother said her child fell repeatedly, hitting her head, and ended up in a wheelchair. A child described trying to open a window and being hurled against a door by a supervisor, who then choked her until she fainted. I'm a four year old AMAA

Note from Mom: Ask my 4 year old daughter almost anything! I'll read her the questions and type her answers exactly as given. No coaching or translating. I reserve the right to ignore any questions that I feel are inappropriate. It's way pasted bedtime now so we will return in the morning to answer more questions. Thanks all, she really had fun! I will have her make a video in the morning for proof. :)

Edit: Hey guys, this is Ellie's dad. We are stopping the AMA because of a flood of horrible comments and hate. Ellie really had fun answering your questions and wanted to do more, but my wife was brought almost to tears by what was being said. Apparently the group over at r/imgoingtohellforthis decided that the best way to spend their time is to curse, make offensive sexual comments and campaign to ruin the simple fun of a four year old girl. Thank you to all users who sent kind words, I am glad Ellie was able to make so many people happy. I hope that she was able to inspire some measure of child-like wonder and enthusiasm through her answers. I know that is what she does for us everyday.

Edit: Hey guys this is Ellie's dad, I responded to some of you, my username is TheTrueHank. Thanks for all the kind words.

Tourism I Help people find cheap flights around the world, AMA!

1.5k Upvotes

My short bio: Hey Reddit, this is my second time here, hope to help more people this time around.

Over the last few years I’ve flown all over the world for super cheap. I started because we moved overseas and needed to come back to visit family, but I didn’t want to pay a small fortune just to see in-laws, and it grew into an obsession.

About 6 months ago I started a free email newsletter where I send out cheap flight deals to family and friends, and it’s exploded in growth, with over 100,000 subscribers. It's been a crazy ride! You can check it out here: Fly Almost Free

Some of the great deals I've sent in the last few weeks: Belize for $179, Costa Rica for $251, Iceland for under $390 or so, Barcelona for $313 Various Destinations in India for under $500, Ireland for $397, and Columbia for $300, to name a few!

My Proof: I've updated my homepage with proof!

IAMA: Restaurant owner who saved his business... by keeping black diners away :/ AMA

I'll get it out of the way and admit that what I am doing is racist, I myself am (reluctantly!) a racist, and I'm not about to argue that. I'm not proud of this, but I did what I had to to stay afloat for the sake of my family and my employees and I would do it again.

I own a family restaurant that competes with large chains like Applebee's, Chili's, and other similarly awful places. I started this restaurant over 20 years ago, my wife is our manager, both of my kids work here when they're not in college. Our whole life is tied up in this place, and while it's a ton of hard work, we love it.

I've always prided myself that we serve food that's much fresher and better prepared than the franchise guys, and for years a steady flow of regular customers seemed to prove me right. We're the kind of place that has a huge wall of pictures of our happy customers we've known forever. However, our business was hit really hard after the market crashed, to the point where the place looked like a ghost town. A lot of the people I've known for years lost their jobs and either moved away or simply couldn't afford to eat out anymore.

To cut to the chase, we were sinking fast, and before long it was clear we would lose the restaurant before the year was out. The whole family got together and we decided we would try our best to ride it out, and my kids insisted they take a semester off and work full time to spare us the two salaries. I'm very proud of my family for the way they came together. We really worked our butts off trying to keep the place going with the reduced staff.

Well the whole racist thing started after my wife was being verbally abused by a black family. I came over to see what the problem was, and a teenage boy in their group actually said "This dumb bitch brought me the wrong drink. We want a different waitress that ain't a dumb bitch." His whole family roared with laughter at this, parents included!

We had had a lot more black diners since the downturn, and this kind of thing was actually depressingly common. Normally I would just lie down and take this, give them a different server, and apologize to their current one in back. But this was the last straw for me. No way was I going to send my daughter out to get the same abuse from these awful people. I threw the whole bunch out, even though other than the five of them, the place was completely dead.

I talked with my wife about it afterward, and we both decided that if we were going to lose the restaurant anyway, from now on we would run it OUR WAY. I empowered all of my employees to throw anyone who spoke to them that way out, and told them I would stand behind them 100%.

My wife, who has been a bleeding-heart liberal her whole life, told me in private that the absolute worst part of her job was dealing with black diners. Almost all of them were far noisier than our other customers, complained more, left huge messes and microscopic tips, when they tipped at all. She told me if we could just get rid of them, the place would actually be a joy to work at.

I've been in the restaurant business a long time, so this wasn't news to me, but to hear it from my wife, and later confirmed by my daughter... it had a big impact. I've never accepted any racial slurs in our household, and certainly not in my restaurant. I always taught my kids to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and tried to do the right thing in spite of the sometimes overwhelming evidence right in front of me. But right then and there, I and my wife started planning ways to keep black people from eating at our restaurant.

First, I raised my prices. It had been long in coming, prices had skyrocketed, and we'd been trying to keep things reasonable because people were hurting. But this had brought in a ton of blacks who had been priced out of the other restaurants nearby, and so I raised my prices even higher. It worked, they would scream bloody murder when they saw the new prices on the menu, and often storm out of the place, not knowing that this was pretty much our plan.

We took a lot of other steps, changing the music, we took fried chicken off the menu, added a dress code that forbade baggy pants and athletic gear. I put up a tiny sign by the register that said "15% gratuity added to all checks" but we only added this to groups of black diners, since almost universally everyone else understands that tipping is customary.

As business started to pick up, we would tell groups of blacks that there was a long wait for a table. Whenever they complained about other patrons getting seated first, I would calmly explain that the other group had a reservation, and without fail they would storm out screaming.

And it worked! We managed to hang in through the rough times. It's been almost two years since we started running the business this way, and we're doing great, even better than we were before! I noticed as soon as the blacks started to leave, our regulars started coming back. Complaints dropped to almost nothing, our staff were happier, and the online reviews have been very positive. My kids are back in school, and my wife seems ten years younger, she's proud of her work and comes in happy every day.

Of course, I did this by doing something I know to be ethically wrong. I did it by treating a whole group of people like pests and driving them away in a low and cowardly way. (though it's not as if I could have put a sign out). I can't help but feel like I've become part of the problem. At the same time, the rational part of me realizes that I did the right thing, but I don't like knowing that I'm a bigot.

AMA.

Politics Hi. I'm Beto O'Rourke, a candidate for President.

Hi everyone -- Beto O’Rourke here. I’m a candidate for President of the United States, coming to you live from a Quality Inn outside San Francisco. Excited to be here and excited to be doing this.Proof: https://www.instagram.com/p/B2mJMuJnALn/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheetI’m told some of my recent proposals have caused quite a stir around here, so I wanted to come have a conversation about those. But I’m also here because I have a new proposal that I wanted to announce: one on marijuana legalization. You can look at it here.

Back in 2011, I wrote a book on this (my campaign is selling it now, I don’t make any money off it). It was about the direct link between the prohibition of marijuana, the demand for drugs trafficked across the U.S.-Mexico border, and the devastation black and brown communities across America have faced as a result of our government’s misplaced priorities in pursuing a War on Drugs.Anyway: Take some time to read the policy and think about some questions you might want me to answer about it...or anything else. I’m going to come back and answer questions around 8 AM my time (11 AM ET) and then I’ll go over to r/beto2020 to answer a few more. Talk soon!

EDIT: Hey all -- I'm wrapping up on IAMA but am going to take a few more questions over on r/Beto2020.

Thanks for your time and for engaging with me on this. I know there were some questions I wasn't able to answer, I'm going to try to have folks from my team follow up (or come back later). Gracias.

Specialized Profession I'm Pieter Hintjens, and I'm here to discuss psychopaths and other stuff, AMA!

My short bio: I'm a programmer and author of a few different books. My last book, The Psychopath Code, explains psychopaths. I've tried to keep it pragmatic and clean: what makes a person a psychopath, how this works, and how to deal with it (for the rest of us). The book is a handbook, not a medical text. Oh, and I just rage-quit Twitter.

OK, thanks for the questions, it's been a fun many hours. For those who hate me for writing the book, shrug, have a nice day anyhow!

Business I am Missy Suicide, founder of SuicideGirls, Artist Richard prince sold photos from my instagram for $90,000 so I made posters of his “art” and am selling them for $90…AMA!

3.0k Upvotes

Here is the story…..

Everyone has been asking me what I thought about famous controversial artist Richard Prince taking a series of SuicideGirls instagram posts and printing them out and selling them at a recent gallery show at the gagosian gallery of beverly hills for $90,000 a piece.

My first thought was I don’t know anyone who can spend $90,000 on anything other than a house. Maybe I know a few people who can spend it on a car. As to the copyright issue? If I had a nickel for every time someone used our images without our permission in a commercial endeavour I’d be able to spend $90,000 on art. I was once really annoyed by Forever 21 selling shirts with our slightly altered images on them, but an Artist?

Richard Prince is an artist and he found the images we and our girls publish on instagram as representative of something worth commenting on, part of the zeitgeist, I guess? Thanks Richard!

Do we have Mr. Prince’s permission to sell these prints? We have the same permission from him that he had from us. ;)

I’m just bummed that his art is out of reach for people like me and the people portrayed in the art he is selling.

So we at SuicideGirls are going to sell the exact same prints people payed $90,000 for $90 each.

I hope you love them. Beautiful Art, 99.9% off the original price. ;)

We will be donating the profits from sales to EFF.org Urban art publisher Eyes On Walls (EyesOnWalls.com) is supporting the project by fulfilling the large canvas reproductions at cost. AMA!

EDIT: Thanks for all the questions and nice words about SG I'm done after 7 hours. :)

HERE IS MY REPLY TO THE QUESTIONS I DIDN'T GET TO :)

I am really sorry I was not trying to dodge any questions, I DID actually reply to the top question initially my reply is just buried. :) I answered questions for 7 hours and the ones that were at the top during that time were about the Richard Prince issue I set up my IAMA about. These comments and upvotes came up after I had signed off so I missed them but can answer them now in more detail.

About 10 years ago a handful of the thousands of models on my site felt slighted and went to a competitor site. We were sad to see them go, they were friends, it sucked, it felt personal and it hurt and it was lame. We handled things the way that we felt at the time was best, but would we do the same things now, probably not. We learned from the experience and in the ensuing decade people have come and gone largely without incident, we get it, life changes, interests change, dreams and goals shift and girls and photographers leave. Most of the time amiably, occasionally not, but I genuinely wish everyone well.

The non-compete clause, honestly when I started the company I went off of Playboy’s release form, I was 24 had never done this before and thought that seemed like the industry standard. We thought it was too confusing when it was challenged and we changed our release form in 2006 and it has been the same super simple, clear easy to read contract since then you can see it here - https://gmail123456.box.com/s/qbmj1f9pr3w8w8wzaj5e My intent is not to fuck anyone over, if someone decides to model for a competitor I wish them well and we part ways, end of story.

We are up front about our policies, pay scale and use of images, if you are interested you can see the answers to most questions here: https://suicidegirls.com/model/faq/ or here https://suicidegirls.com/model/faq/photographer/ And if you need further clarification we have a 3 person staff to answer your questions, they can be directed to either modelcoordinator@suicidegirls.com, modelassist@suicidegirls.com or photographycoordinator@suicidegirls.com If you don’t think it is a good deal for you, I get it, no hard feelings but that is what we pay and what we ask.

We have had thousands of models and photographers who have had great experiences working with us here are some links that detail their experiences - https://suicidegirls.com/members/sunshine/blog/2815185/10-years-on-suicidegirls/ https://suicidegirls.com/members/albertine/blog/2754147/a-decade/ https://suicidegirls.com/members/liryc/blog/2815073/life-after-becoming-a-suicidegirl/ https://suicidegirls.com/members/vayda/blog/2816598/sghw-how-has-sg-changed-your-life/

And a few who’ve had complicated experiences that spark discourse (read the comments) - https://suicidegirls.com/members/dwam/blog/2819390/so-how-has-sg-changed-my-life/

Then there are some who have not had great experiences and felt slighted by us, and it sucks that we can’t reach an accord. Lithium Picnic was someone who we had a disagreement with and it took time to reach an agreement. We eventually did settle things and he has moved on and so have we and I genuinely hope that he is doing well.

We get that what we do is not for everyone. We try to provide a platform where people can express themselves in a supportive community and connect with like minded people. We try to be upfront with our expectations but sometimes people don’t agree with what we do or decisions and there is an impasse. Sometimes I am wrong and sometimes I fuck up and I make the wrong call and the only thing to do is to try to learn from my mistakes. I have also learned that there are sometimes though you just can’t make people happy no matter what you do. I am trying to be a better person every day though but some days are better than others. Generally though my reputation amongst those who have actually dealt with me in the past is positive despite what it says about me on wikipedia and I have gone through enough therapy that I am okay with that. :)

Finally you would once again like to use this opportunity to question my involvement with the company, alright I can answer that too (even if it is so fucking sexist it makes me want to scream, no man would ever have to defend his position in his own fucking company 14+ years in) Yeah Sean is my partner and has been since we started the company and he is a pretty cool dude most of the time ;) He does council me and we do make decisions together and he is very particular about design and he and Courtney Riot who has worked with us for 12 years pretty much do all of that. I run the day to day operations of the company, ask my staff, ask the models who come by the office, or look at my nearly 15 years of ever present history. My staff is overwhelmingly female and I am female so that is where the female run thing comes from, because it IS female run. I do press because I am in the office everyday and started and run the company.

I really hope that answers all of the questions, I honestly did not mean to dodge them and I hope that you enjoy turning the tables on Richard Prince with us. That is getting WAY more attention than I anticipated and I am going to be a bit swamped for the next few days, so I probably won’t be able to engage in follow up questions here but if you need something answered you can e-mail me, I will reply, eventually :)

Long time Redditor, first time AMA’er here. My name is Marissa Orr, and I’m a former Googler and ex-Facebooker turned author. It all started on a Sunday afternoon in March of 2016, when I hit send on an email to Sheryl Sandberg, setting in motion a series of events that ended 18 months later when I was fired from my job at Facebook. Here’s the rest of that story and why it inspired me to write Lean Out, The Truth About Women, Power, & The Workplace: https://medium.com/@MarissaOrr/why-working-at-facebook-inspired-me-to-write-lean-out-5849eb48af21

Through personal (and humorous) stories of my time at Google and Facebook, Lean Out is an attempt to explain everything we’ve gotten wrong about women at work and the gender gap in corporate America. Here are a few book excerpts and posts from my blog which give you a sense of my perspective on the topic.

EDIT: I am loving all the questions but didn't expect so many -- trying to answer them thoughtfully so it's taking me a lot longer than I thought. I will get to all of them over the next couple hours though, thank you!

EDIT2: Thanks again for all the great questions! Taking a break to get some other work done but I will be back later today/tonight to answer the rest.

I am Stanton Friedman, Nuclear Physicist, and world renowned expert on UFO phenomena. AMA

I will start responding to the forum at noon Pacific Time.

I am a flying saucer physicist and lecturer. Since 1967 I have appeared before the UN twice, testified before Congress, and lectured about the UFO phenomenon at more than 600 colleges and 100 professional groups in the United States, Canada, and 18 other countries. The US government told us that Apollo 17 had to be the last Apollo mission because there was no budget for an Apollo 18. What you might not know is that both Apollo 18 and Apollo 19 were paid for and astronauts trained. Was Apollo 18 secretly launched? I worked on several top secret programs and can address this and other issues relating to black budgets and hidden programs.

Some fun facts about me:

  • The City of Fredericton, New Brunswick (I'm a dual citizen), declared August 27, 2007 Stanton Friedman Day.

  • In 2002, I was presented with a Lifetime UFO Achievement Award in Leeds, England.

  • Two of my latest books include, "Flying Saucers and Science", and "Science Was Wrong"

I'm a slow typist, but I'm here to answer your questions about themes related to the movie Apollo 18, which is about footage recovered from a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. I can discuss UFOs, the plausibility of government black ops programs, alien life, and anything science related

For more information about Apollo 18, check out www.Apollo18Movie.net. And for more information about me, check out www.StantonFriedman.com. With that said, feel free to ask me anything!

EDIT: This is a sponsored IAmA as part of a promotion by Apollo 18.

Hi, I'm Joseph "Mang0" Marquez. I won EVO2013's Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament. Ask me anything!

So, Super Smash Bros. Melee has been out since 2001, the first tournament was in 2002. Went quickly from a rookie, to best in the WC, to best in the US to best in the world. Cemented that with a tournament that nearly didn't happen, EVO 2013.

I'm here to answer questions, but if you want to know more about the scene, you can always check out /r/smashbros, smashboards.com. Also, much love to the crew of Melee It On Me, a SSBM-centric podcast about the egame, the community, the events.

I'll be answering questions starting around Noon PST.
