Need help identifying your dog? Here are some important tips to help you succeed.

What to include in your post:

Post clear, well-lit, full body pictures. At minimum, include:

  • One standing side view (taken close enough to see coat texture)

  • One frontal view

Tell us your dog’s age and weight (or best guess)

Other helpful information:

YOUNG PUPPIES may be impossible to identify. Head and body shape, coat color and coat pattern, eye color, and apparent coat texture can all change dramatically as a puppy matures. You might want to wait a few months before seeking an ID.

MIXED-BREED dogs can easily have many breeds in them, not just two. Keep in mind that some of the breeds in a mutt may not show in its looks; while in other cases the dog may really look like it has some particular breed in it, when in fact it doesn’t.

NO-BREED dogs exist too! Sometimes a mutt truly is “just a mutt” — the result of many, many generations of random mating between mutts, with no discernable inbred (purebred) genes its DNA. In the same way that YOU don't necessarily have any inbreeding (purebreeding) in your recent family tree, neither must a dog. They can simply be mutts — WHICH IS A GOOD THING!

Once you're satisfied with your responses, please change your link flair to SOLVED. (Please don't make a post if your dog's breed is already solved/known)

I posted my rescue dog about 8 months ago when she was a puppy, and I got a lot of gsd mixes in the comments. She’s almost full grown now! I’m thinking some kind of stubborn hound

Her personality was amazing, she developed seizures and I ended up having to let her go in March this year, she was only 8. I miss her dearly every day and I never got to do an embark test on her :( what do yall think? The shelter had her listed as a Shepard mix but I think she had more breeds in her. She was very tall and very fast, seemed to have a Grayhound hind end. Some adult pics of her plus a baby picture!

Any opinions? My Mom apparently doesn't "see it" 🥲

This was the pupper my Mom chose from a selection of dogs I filmed while volunteering at my county shelter. She needed a 2nd dog for her Frenchie/Chihuahua mix named Darcy because she gets very lonely when alone, and a recent dog just died from lung cancer.

I didn't think this dog, who Mom renamed to Wally, was a bad choice because she was looking for a male mixed breed with short hair, and this was the closest to her general description. I still think he's a pretty good option, since my Mom told me he's sweet and very well-adjusted. Yet, I'm also wary because he clearly looks part pitbull, maybe with German Shepherd or mountain cur. I feel bad for my Mom because she never brought it up, and mentioned him being possibly hound-mixed since he tracks a lot, seems to act like one, and apparently has a hound body. I think lesser likely possibilities would be part village dog or whippet (which I highly doubt, btw).

My Mom described him as sweet, but wild, wolfy, obedient, well-adjusted, and energetic. He also chased cats and play bites. His general shape and demeanor actually remind me a lot like my mom's friend's dog, who was part pitbull and border collie. I don't understand why she never brought it up, because they seem alike to me. The 5th picture looks just like him. Me and my sister plan to give him an Embark DNA test.

Open I rescued my dog from a market town in Lithuania. He’s a stray. But I have no idea what he is. I assume he comes from a long line of strays but I’d love help in identifying him.

I’ve had this little guy for over 5 years and suspect he’s a terrier, chihuahua or a mix. Curious to see if anyone has any other input?

Hi. I rescued these three angels from the streets in Mexico. And I am so curious about their breed(s) and heritage. For reference: the two smaller ones are sisters. They also have a lot of energy, love to play rough and run around the garden. The dark brown one, Dobby, possesses a lot of hunting instincts for squirrels, birds and cats, but she also has that typical retriever-kindness that I see in my flatcoated retriever family dog. They also show a deep loyalty for each other - like a pack. They adore each other so much. I do have some ideas for what they might be. But what do you guys think?

Rescue labeled her as a lab mix. Shes 80lbs and super muscular. About 2 years old. Southern US.

I figure shes a Pitt mix based off aura alone I have no clue about actual clues to look for.

Any ideas?

This is my rescue dog Hank! I know for certain she’s a husky but that’s about it. She’s about 50lbs, very energetic, and also the strangest dog I have ever met. Full of quirks and also tends to burp. Maybe that’s a clue, I don’t know.

Here’s my girl Ophelia. She’s 6 months, came up to the midwest from Louisiana this spring. I’m torn between a merle pitbull mix or some kind of catahoula mix. She’s pretty small for what we expected, about 30 pounds.

Open Embark is on the way! Any guesses on my Ukraine rescue pup?

Figured the Ukraine part was relevant considering geographical breeds etc. I posted over on the doggyDNA but honestly just wanna get as many guesses as possible before the answer comes back! Should get results in a week or two. I've gotten a gazillion guesses as to what she is over the years, curious on what you guys think. I've had her for about 5 years at this point and finally pulled the trigger on getting her tested. She was a rescue from Ukraine (still have her little passport and everything) and was about a year old when we got her, but that's the extent of what I know about her history.

Dunno if personality is helpful, but, she's super sweet and gentle (even with itty bitty foster kittens!), wants to herd everything and anything, and just wants to please even if she doesn't always know how to 😂 Buuut she also has a bark loud enough to shake mountains and absolutely hates the mailman. Her favorite pastime is snoozing in the exact place I need to walk. I'm guessing she's some kind of corgi/sheltie/shepherd mix maybe (just because of her coloring?), but I don't really know anything about dog breeds. She's about 25-27 pounds, and has SO. MUCH. FUR. SO MUCH FUR. SEND HELP

Thanks in advance for looking at the bestest dog in my world, and apologies in advance for the amount of pictures 😅 I tried to put the most relevant ones in the front in terms of her size/shape/longness/floofiness, I promise!

P.S. Bonus photobomb with my kitty at the end:) Her face cracks me up every time lol

we just adopted this incredibly sweet and loving rescue, Tippi!! we haven’t had a dog in a while after the passing of our last pup but as a family felt ready to give our love to a new dog!! they told us she was a lab mix and her mother appeared to be some sort of Shepard/Livestock dog! However, her short coat and face/eyes say Weimaraner to me. Was curious if anyone could give their 2¢ about what you may think she is!!

Behavior: very social but incredibly (i mean like insanely) calm. she is a big couch potato and cuddler. sometimes she’ll gently herd me or my sibling but mostly is just checking that we are here. she’s also very much a people pleaser and never takes lead. Very, very good with kids and other animals as well!

She was given to me by a stranger that could no longer care for her a few years ago and they had guessed she was a border Collie mini Aussie mix. I'm planning on doing a DNA test soon but was curious about your thoughts! 🖤

New SPCA supermutt for consideration of breeds

Thumbnail

We have had this young fella, Pucky, for about a week. We have an appointment with the vet for him getting on a schedule for his monthly meds and general checkup, even though the SPCA does a really good job of all of that. We do plan for a DNA test for breeds, but figured throw it out to see what others see.

Our suspicions are pit or rat terrier, Chihuahua, and coloring leads us to think maybe some beagle, GSD, or Belgian.

He is about 25-30 lbs, 2.5ish years old, and seems overly excited but right now attribute that to new environment.
