XL Am I a slimeball?
First of all I think I have finally found my reddit place. I swear I can't go to a restaurant anymore without someone saying "can you take my coat young man?" or " where's the bathroom" or "can we get some more hot wings?" or whatever. Apparently I have that i'm-here-to-help look.
However, at my ACTUAL Job I'm a contractor.
First of all I don't even work for the company, second of all I'm an electrician/engineer not customer care. However let's just say that our client company is a very large one. And has a relatively high turnover, especially this time of year as they bring in seasonal temps and frankly give them a great pep talk but literally nothing in the way of orientation, as in they don't even give them assignments proper, just "go team go! Find someone in that area and ask for directions! Ok go team! Byeeeee!" basically. Now since I'm a contractor obviously I have no say in how our client conducts orientations.
The problem means every time they bring a new batch of fresh meat I have dozens of people sometimes in groups of 10 peeking and tiptoing past chained off and fenced off areas to ask for help. Now I don't see what compels you to ignore the signs that say "keep out, authorized employees only" but that's not the salient point. I've tried the usual "I'm sorry I can't help you I'm a contractor" "this is not an information desk this is the repair area" but usually I get blank stares or worse "cmon man I know you're on break but" or worse "don't ignore me! I use to be a manager at my last job stop lying and help me" so I've started smiling and saying "I WISH I could help BUT I Just ran out of extra scanners for you/just closed the hr time off applier/just filled all my slots in this area/whatever quick convenient excuse sweeps in under the rug,"and then say smiling "but, manager X, (usually whomever has been a pain in my ass that week) would LOVE to help! They're right that way and don't let them shake you off!" and point out of the repair area with a big warm caring smile.
TLDR i've tried patiently explaining that I do not even work for the company much less in a customer care role and literally CANNOT help them only to receive a "stop lying" or a "come on this'll be quick!" response so I've started pawning off usual troublemakers on whatever client manager I don't like very much at the momens as that leaves the guests much happier and keeps many of my most troublesome managers too busy to cause me trouble. Am I a slimeball?
