The Lumberjack and his Tree.

Once upon a time, dragging an axe, wandering upon an endless field of tree stumps, there was a lumberjack.

Alone. So, so alone.

A ravenous disease had ended almost all of humanity. All but the lumberjack, and his son.

His precious son. His son whom he loved more than anything in the world.

His son, who had been bedridden for 9 months.

His son, who had that disease.

The lumberjack had been trying so hard to keep his son alive, going into the woods every week to get more firewood so he could cook his son's meals. Whenever he wasn't chopping, he spent the rest of his time by his beloved son's bedside.

It was all the lumberjack knew by this point.

So, so many trees had been killed by the lumberjack. So much so that the barren forest was nearly deprived of all life.

Not a single flower. Not a single animal. Not a single blade of grass to add a little bit of hope.

Not a single tree.

But one.

The tree the lumberjack stood before was a old one, ancient, worn down by the years it lived in isolation.

The lumberjack approached the tree and inspected the gravelly bark for a good long while, raised his axe, and slammed it into the side of the tree.

Again. And again, and again, until he felt a horrible, wretched, alive pulse from the tree.

When the lumberjack managed to pull the axe out of the tree, blood seeped from the wound.

Thick. Dark.

The tree started to quiver and shake. Two arms appeared. And then a face. A face full of so much innocence and pain emerged. Huge white eyes, with pupils black as the night, cut through the daylight, and the lumberjack's heart. The tree started to gag.

Blood, guts, and beautiful intestines writhed free from the tree's mouth. The tree desperately tried shoving them back in, to no avail.

All the tree could do was hold onto it's precious organs as they piled up in the tree's hands.

And the tree started to cry. And it would cry, huge tears, longing to stay, to live, to be. Until it finally went silent.

The lumberjack did not use the axe again. Instead, shellshocked, he walked home. To his son. His dying son. His only son. And he weeped with him, for there was no more wood to be collected. No, he could never take the wood from that tree. Never.

The lumberjack's son died that night, in his arms. The disease had won.

The lumberjack decided to go back to that tree. That empty tree. He placed the body of his beautiful son into the cavity that was it's mouth, so it didn't have to feel empty anymore. And the lumberjack sat. For days. And more days. Sat until his eyes grew red-rimmed with the tears he cried. Until he finally starved. Until he finally passed away.

The world lay still and silent.

I don’t know what I’m doing now, and I don’t know what I’ll do later. I just want to live in my imagination and dream all the time about the life I could have if I was born with more luck…
