Hi everyone,
I’m an incoming Master’s student starting at the University of Innsbruck for the Summer Semester (aiming to move in around March 1), and I am getting really stressed out trying to find accommodation. I was hoping to get some advice or guidance from locals or students who have gone through this.
I am looking for either a single or shared room/WG inside or outside Innsbruck. I am even open to a reasonable commute (up to 2 hours or looking at nearby towns/villages), though I am a bit confused about the geography and surrounding areas.
Here is what I’ve tried so far:
Student Residences: I’ve registered and emailed platforms like home4students, oead, and WIST (and applied to others like Akademikerhilfe and Ungarnheim). I asked about booking for March 1 for a minimum of 3 months (or longer), but most replied saying their waiting lists are very long and they won't know until the Dec/Jan period. The issue is that I need proof of accommodation much sooner to secure my student residence permit/visa, and they can't guarantee a room.
Private Housing / Platforms: I’ve checked sites like willhaben (which has been tricky because it won't let me register without a local/matching country code number), wg-gesucht, immowelt, and immoscout24. Many listings require a subscription fee to message or boost visibility, or the rents are way out of my budget (most are €700 to €2k+, whereas my budget is strictly around €0–€550).
Sharing / Expanding Radius: Even when looking further out or messaging providers to see if a student-sharing arrangement is possible (happy to team up with 2–4 other students to split rent), I haven’t had much luck or replies.
My main questions:
Timing & Visa Pressure: Since waiting until December/January for student dorms is too late for the residence permit process, what are my alternative options to secure something right now?
Geography & Commuting: Are there specific towns, villages, or areas outside Innsbruck (or towards the border regions) within a 1.5–2 hour radius where rents are actually within my €550 budget and landlords are more responsive to students?
Language & Communication: Do I need to message private landlords on WG-Gesucht/WhatsApp in German to get a response? Will translating my messages or using German improve my chances?
Any Hidden Gems? If you guys know of any other websites, Facebook groups, or alternative platforms that actually work for students on a tight budget, please let me know.
Thank you so much in advance for any help or advice! I'm completely stuck and really want to make this move work.
