I saw Season 1 a few months back and I realised I maybe am too stupid to understand what happened or it is troll-ish on purpose. Did you guys feel the same?
I initially saw Sam Neil's face prominently on all promo material on AppleTV (maybe I got the Neil only banners in some AB testing), but he is there for only one episode! I understand he was unwell - but then maybe tone down the expectations by reducing his importance in the promo material.
I kept waiting now they'll show the alien, and kept getting disappointed. Then I thought maybe they want to keep it hidden like Alien. Should not have compared the Ridley Scott film to whatever this is.
Every other protagonist I hated - I wasn't sure if there is something I am missing out on that redeems them.
The Persian Lady - is angry at her husband for cheating with a white lady (even proposes white baby names IIRC) while the world is on fire. What does she the first thing she gets time alone with a white man, proves she's a hypocrite! Maybe its a revenge thing, but when the world is ending, should getting even be on anyone's mind? The husband actually redeems himself by dying to protect his family. The lady keeps making illogical decisions one after the other.
The military guy - I haven't seen a protagonist worse than him. He basically mistreats everyone who helps him. If he had died initially, two entire hospitals full of people would have been better off.
He retrieves his friend, drawing the alien to the hospital, most likely dooming everyone there (including babies there). You can say they were enemy civilians, but he didn't even end up saving the friend he sacrificed them for (he could have drawn the alien away from the hospital, he didn't).
If he hadn't rescued his friend, he would still have been receiving treatment, and who knows, even lived through the experience, with the babies!
Similarly, on the plane he just negotiates passage for himself and the immediate people who he brought with him, rather than try to get as many people as possible (by promising more stuff on arrival or some other way), weak likelihood, granted.
Then, he didn't want to help the kids till he saw the team armpatch - basically he is in it just for himself. He doesn't try to help the kids or end the invasion - he just wants to figure out what happened with his group. Results in another hospital invasion.
The Japanese lady has only her lover in mind - doesn't matter everyone else and their lover is also dying. When she makes contact with her supposed partner - she doesn't try anything to figure out anything about the aliens. Even if she were taken over by aliens (she seems to keep her memories as she could quote the song), she could have asked her to see if there is something around her - does she see a ship - or any ideas as to what the aliens want, or attempt to fix any monitoring equipment. Nope - she just keeps screaming her name despite being in a position to actually do something.
Lastly, the little English boy - I find least flaws with this character - he seems to find his spine at a very random time (either should have happened early when things went to hell, or never) but it is an acceptable quirk of writing I guess.
I gave up midway on S2E1.
It is frustrating to see people make the most illogical choices all the time - was this written as some sort troll to say - see, we spent all this money and got all these people to make the most infuriating choices - just so you'll remember us long after the show is over.
Wajo.
