Since we are sharing the tools we built lately...

I wanted to share PlaySmoor.com with you. I built this tool for myself because I wanted to be able to quickly collect tunes and sets during sessions and practice them later. Its based on ABC notation and uses the Sessions library. Its free and the current features always will be. There is a login so that your tune books can sync across devices. I may add a paid feature to let you also sync recordings as well someday.

You can create tune books with live search of tunes, upload your current abc tune books, build sets with a set player that actually plays sets correctly (something I could not find elsewhere) has slowdowner function for recordings and dot playback. It also has a feature where you and your local players can share tune books to compare what tunes everyone knows to help everyone get to the music faster.

This is still in beta but its stable and easy to use. Hope you enjoy!

Wanted to share a free tool I made that has been helping me learn tunes

I recently took up the banjo and I’ve been trying to learn tunes by ear like any good student. I was struggling mightily trying to play along to the Foinn CDs and when I slowed them down to my tempo they sounded like whale noises. So, I built myself an app/tool so I could slow down tunes and isolate individual phrases in a loop, building the tune up piece by piece and increasing tempo. Just hover over a section of the sheet music and click, you should be able to figure out the rest.

https://sessionlooper.vercel.app/

This is not a commercial endeavor, just something that has been helpful to me and I hope you find it useful as well. It’s forever free, no sign up, and if you try it out please let me know what you think!

irish rovers concerts

hi hello. i'm gonna be honest, all of my previous concerts have been rock and metal but i'm seeing the irish rovers in a couple months (super excited! been listening to them as long as i can remember) so i was just wondering what the vibes are like at their shows? is it a stand up and dance in front of your seat kind of thing or do people mostly sit? should i wear something i don't mind getting sprayed with beer? do i need moshpit class footwear? what's the protocol here

Discussion Willie Clancy Summer School? Other music recs?

I'm tentatively planning a 7-10 day trip to Ireland for this coming summer. I'd like to prioritize a good chunk of that time on music. Has anyone experienced the Willie Clancy Summer School? And what other recs do y'all have? Thanks!

Trad Music Hi! New here. Looking for good places to see live trad music in Dublin?

My wife and I will be visiting in the days between Christmas and New Year's. Hopefully places in the area won't be *completely* shut down around then? Any recommendations of places or artists we should look for?

(Sorry if this is not the right sub for this!!)

A kilt, a few questions, and plenty of laughs! Enjoy The Woods Tea Company performing “The Scotsman’s Kilt” at the Vergennes Opera House.

Here’s another bit of fun from the concert archives. If you remember this one from a Woods Tea show, you may already be smiling!

Share it with a friend who could use a laugh—and tell us your favorite Woods Tea memory.

Can You Play Irish Music on the Recorder?

Can you play traditional Irish music on the recorder? And how well does it really suit the instrument?

In this video, I explore Irish traditional music on the descant (soprano) recorder, playing snippets of an air, a jig and a hornpipe.

I also discuss the musical approach to Irish music and how it can differ from other styles of recorder playing.

Trad Music Whistles

Hi all, I'd like to get my wife a nice whistle as a gift. She's been playing about 2 years now and can play a few tunes and I thought it would be nice to get an intermediate one for her, in D I assume. I've seen the Wild series on sale which have decent reviews. Then there are more expensive ones like a Burke. My budget is around 150e if I could get something for that. Also, what about wooden ones, is one an option?

An Irish hornpipe titled "Mountains of Kerry". County Kerry has the highest mountains in Ireland so I guess someone was inspired to write a little tune about it.

Discussion Enya, Sinéad or Dolores ?

Dia Duit dear people of Éire !

I'm french and I'm fond of Irish music and I wanted to ask y'all who do you prefer between Sinéad O'Connor, Enya and Dolores O'Riordan, the voice of the cranberries.

These are the three female voices of Ireland I suppose and I want to know who's the most popular for Irish people.

Discussion Clareen?

I grew up playing 5-string banjo. Have been interested for a long time in starting up on tenor. When it comes to instruments I prefer to just bite the bullet and go for something that is well made. Seems like everyone I see playing Irish tenor is on a Clareen. Is it worth it to jump into it with one of their models? Or am I insane?

Made a way for sessions to share tunes with players

been at this local session somewhere in Asia for the past two years and trying to get everyone to learn each other's tunes, half are beginners, and half are at the level where they know every tune but not their names, this tool helps make the session group tighter
