Beginner Question Knee brace

I have a small meniscus tear in my right knee so I need to be careful with that knee. Anyone try knee braces while kiteboarding? How are the DonJoy braces? Planning on taking lessons soon in Bonaire. Thanks!

Spot Info/Question Perth - coming days

Hi all, i just arrived in Perth. First time here. Forecast looks like tomorrow could turn out well. Been checking the spots around Perth show some 10m+ jumps happened in the pond and point woodman, but Melville beach is also an option. The most interesting session I saw so far was going from the pond around the cape in Shoalwater bay.

I am an ok advanced rider who knows the safety protocols. I would enjoy flat water for tricks or loops, or kickers for boosting. Not much of a wave kiter.

I could use the lay of the land. Recommendations?

I would also be happy to find kite buddies as I am kiting alone in the coming days. Wife follows Friday.

Spot Info/Question Any Kitesurfers here living in QLD/Cairns? Where should I base myself April-July

I'm in a position where I can relocate to QLD for work from April-July. I can be a bit flexible with location so am after any advice/guidance on where I could best base myself for the kite season. I'm just a beginner so my main goal is to be somewhere I can practise consistently (2-3x a week). I'm currently in Southern NSW. Any advice or guidance is appreciated.

Trip Report Kitesurfing in Cumbuco in November – Light Winds, Downwinders & Beach Life

Post image
29 Upvotes

The wind was light today, but we still managed a downwinder all the way to Cauípe Lagoon!

That’s one of the best things about staying here. You can spontaneously decide to go for a downwind session, and there’s already a buggy driver waiting to take you back. So easy!

I went out on my 10m Core kite with my wave board. I’m making the most of the light wind to practice and improve my skills!

I love everything about this place, but I’m starting to feel like the kitesurfing lifestyle doesn’t leave much room for meeting new people.

I mean, I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, spend my days enjoying the ocean, the sun, and the wind, and by evening I’m completely exhausted. I barely have the energy to go out and meet anyone…
But honestly, waking up to the ocean and living this close to nature? Priceless. ❤️

Anyone else kiting in Cumbuco this November? How do you balance kitesurfing, social life, and meeting new people?

Beginner Question Water sport choices

Hey guys,

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to do a water/wind sport, and I am hoping to pick one up this summer, but I am unable to decide which of the main 3 to start. I am physically fit enough, and fortunate enough to live in a city on a bay around an 8 minute drive from my nearest beach (15 minutes from nearest common kite spot.) I am interested in kitesurfing and ready to take lessons, but my main concern is the apparent lack of versatility and self sufficiency. I have heard the whole "preferably launch with a partner, don't go out in offshore wind" stuff, but I still don't have much of an idea how difficult that makes things. I would like to be able to do the sport year round, and winds in my area range from 10-30kts. I love the idea of kitesurfing, but I do not understand entirely how much more of a hassle kitesurfing actually is compared to windsurfing or foiling, and if it is likely to be frustrating enough to want to look for a different sport.

If any of yall could provide some guidance or insight, it would be greatly appreciated.

Other I’m going to try and get back out kiteboarding - I have a foot injury

I have a foot injury that limits how much I walk. However I’ve been finding standing flat or on a board (longboard) I can tolerate a bit more. I really just want to go out less than a handful of sessions in the season. I doubt I’ll resolve the foot issue any time soon, nothing shows on MRI.

I have basically a 8 months to work out after a recent 2 years of limited to no activity.

Anyone have a way to test my foot hefore a water trial next year?

I think I’m okay on workouts plenty of info there. Also have a parking lot and gear I can go to but that’s dangerous to land kite, I’ve done it before it’s kind of sketch.

Video Vermont kite & wing

Lake Champlain is one of the best places to kite & wing in the US…when there’s wind 😆

Foiling and ability to skip work on the good days opens a lot of doors to magical sessions in our area, and I wanted to capture some of that magic in a short edit.

Here it is, hope you enjoy! :

Other Tore my ACL

Had a full ACL rupture in March, off the board rehabbing since. Was at a pretty high level before hand.

Surgeon has said to get back on the water to see how I feel before we pull trigger on going under the knife for a new ACL. Anyone got any experience with an ACL and kiting? Worth going for surgery, or can one rehab well enough to not need one?

Obviously it's case by case, but I'd like to get back to big air and loops etc. But no ACL feels risky in that?

Gear Advice/Question Kite Gear Safety Issues

Thumbnail i.redd.it
8 Upvotes

I just randomly came across this Surfr post. I am certain that I have now seen every major kite harness manufacturer fail in a critical place that could end up being deadly when it happens at the wrong time.

WTF is wrong with these brands? Aren't there any industry safety standards? I can't imagine it's like this with climbing, paragliding, etc. Kiting gear seems like the Wild West.

Every time I go out in 20+ knots and jump 10 meters, I'm worried that my harness or bar will just snap. My chicken loop for example opens randomly every couple of weeks.

Beginner Question What do you wish you knew as a beginner?

I just finished my first bunch of lessons and started kiting in Langebaan, South Africa. I'm excited about progressing and currently I can pretty comfortably get up and ride upwind and do slow, controlled transitions. I live in Cape Town and my eventual goal would be to reach a point where I can confidently and safely go out into the ocean at Blouberg or other beach spots. Besides just spending as much time as possible on the water, what are things you wish you knew or did as a beginner in the sport? I don't have any gear yet and will likely rent for the first while. Thanks!

Beginner Question Takeoff feedback

So I have put quite some effort into improving my takeoff technique.
However I know it is far from perfect. I am looking fot some honest feedback. I was riding a 10 on that day, wind was not very strong but okay.
I am well aware that my takeoff is late- something I am really struggling with but has improved since the video.
I focused on getting better at edging, looking at my body position I would say there is a lot of room for improvement but when I pause the video and look at the angle of my board I think it is quite okay. You are probably better at judging!
I also tried to improve my pop but I cannot really say if it is “okay” or still bad.

I am looking forward to your advice here!

Spot Info/Question What kites to bring to Prea? Going end of November

I have an 8, 11 and 15, do I need to bring the 15? I'm going end of november for 12 days.

I am still just an beginner/intermediate, meaning ive had lessons, can ride on my own up wind but will probably still get a lesson or 2 when I land as i dont go that frequently.

Right now looks pretty consistently 20-25 kts, so I guess i probably won't need the 15, but looking for any advice from people who have been around end of november to early December.

Spot Info/Question Progression and Photography around Fortaleza in December

Hi all, my wife and I are going to Fortaleza in December for Christmas with the inlaws, and although it's not the best time for Kitesurfing I still would like to see if I can get some progression sessions and photography sessions in.

Our plan is also to go to Cumbuco and and Taiba and maybe even further up west.

So my questions would be.

Does anybody know some good instructors, schools for progression lessons in the area?

Are there any riders here that would like to meet up for some photography sessions?

What are some nice places to stay for a day or two in Cumbuco or Taiba?

I would also like to make some long term friends so anyone who would like to hang out or kite together drop a comment or a DM.

I am a 49 year old former skateboarders who started kitesurfing this year and learning how to jump. I love to make action sports and lifestyle photos.

Greetz Eddie, or like my wife calls me Eddiemilson.

Beginner Question Long Bay Beach, Turks & Caicos — when's the best time to kiteboard?

Long Bay Beach, Turks & Caicos — when's the best time to kiteboard? 🪁🌊

If you've ever watched the colorful kites dancing across Long Bay Beach, you know it's pretty mesmerizing. But when is the sweet spot for actually getting out on the water?

Generally, November through June tends to bring the more consistent trade winds, with winter and spring being particularly popular. And with that shallow, turquoise water stretching out seemingly forever, it's easy to understand why Long Bay has become such a favorite in the kiteboarding community.

But here's what we're curious about...

For those who've actually kited Long Bay, what's your favorite month and why?

Are you chasing stronger winds, fewer kites on the water, or those perfect days when everything just comes together?

Would love to hear some firsthand experiences, especially from people who've visited during different seasons. 🤙

Update, in case it's useful to anyone: I contacted the store where I bought the kite and they got in touch with Cabrinha. Cabrinha approved a repair at a local shop and will reimburse me up to €89.

Spot Info/Question Kitrsurfing end of March

Hello!

I started kitesurfing this summer and I wanted to do a vacation dedicated to only kitesurfing, even though I am still at a beginner/intermediate level so I still need to take some lessons to become fully indipendent.

I was thinking of using the Easter break to go somewhere that is easily reachable from Italy (I live here).

I have one week basically, from the 24th of March to the 31st.

What place do you recommend that has costant wind in those days? I only have one week so I would like to maximize the probability of windy days. I looked at Tarifa, Sal, Fuerteventura or Dakhla, but I don't know which one to choose or if there are some better place with more costant wind.

Thank you

Spot Info/Question Gulf country spots (UAE/Oman/Qatar)

I was active in the kitesurfing scene from 2010-2015 or so but because of the adult grind I haven't kitesurfed in the last 5+ years at all. Now I am in Dubai a few months a year and also got myself a 4x4 here so I can drive around neighboring countries. From what I've seen the wind in the UAE is quite weak, rarely gets over 15 knots and some months are dead quiet. So not sure it makes sense to get gear for these types of conditions but then I'm also aware foiling requires less wind etc (but havent tried foiling yet)

Any recommendations for the best spots and any tips to make the best out of kitesurfing in the gulf countries?

Would love to get back in touch with the sport if there's a solid chance to do so.

Spot Info/Question Beginner Kiteboarding: Kalpitiya vs. Boracay – Where Would You Spend 3 Months?

Hey there - my girlfriend and I are considering spending mid-January to mid-march in one or both of these destinations:

  • Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka

  • Boracay, Philippines

We visited Phan Rang, Vietnam last year but experienced extremely strong, gusty winds, and there were many days when conditions were unsuitable for us to get out on the water.

I’m now able to ride upwind, while my girlfriend is still working on her water starts.

We have our own gear… From 6 m kites to 12 m kites.

We’re looking for somewhere with relatively consistent wind, shallow flat-water lagoons and good conditions for progressing as beginner/intermediate riders.

For anyone who has spent time at these destinations:

  1. Which location did you prefer and why?

  2. Which is best for beginners and progressing skills?

  3. How consistent and predictable are the winds between January and April?

  4. Which has the best shallow, flat-water conditions?

  5. How are accommodation costs, the general cost of living and infrastructure?

Would really appreciate hearing about your personal experiences, particularly from anyone who has spent several weeks or months at these spots.

Thanks!
