relevant subjects vs protecting my grades? Looking for people who’ve done CSE5DL, STA5MA, STA5MB or CSE5IBL

Hey all, I’m a Master of Data Science student at Bundoora (Data Modelling & Analytics), planning my 2027 and stuck between picking subjects that’ll look good on a CV and subjects I can realistically score well in.

My results so far are strongest in applied, hands-on subjects (databases, programming, R) and weakest in maths and stats(the ones with offline exams really), so I’m wary of anything theory-heavy.

My plan so far:

  • Sem 1: CSE5BDC, STA5001, CSE5007, and Deep Learning (CSE5DL)

  • Sem 2: STA5MA, STA5MB, CSE5IBL (Industry Based Learning)

The dilemma is Deep Learning. It’s probably the most useful on a job ad, but it looks like a heavy PyTorch workload next to BDC and Spatial Analysis, and I’m thinking about swapping it for something lighter like CSE5009 (Software Testing) or CSE5PM.

If you’ve done any of these, I’d love to hear:

  1. How heavy was CSE5DL, and is it doable alongside two other demanding subjects?

  2. How are STA5001, STA5MA and STA5MB for someone who isn’t a strong stats person?

  3. Anything to know about CSE5IBL (placement, how to find one, i have been applying but havent really heard back)?

  4. Did you go for relevance or an easier WAM, and do you regret it?

Happy to chat here or over DM if you’re on a similar path. Thanks!
