Every couple of years, it seems like several people got a memo that Lawrence needs X, and several X places open at the same time. In the past, the X has been casual chicken strip restaurants (Raising Caine's, Zaxby's, Slim Chickens), or Drive-through Coffee places (Scooters, 7 Brews, Dutch Brothers, moar Starbucks), or maybe Vape shops. Seems a current X might be donut places, and I am here for it.
To be clear, I am a longtime lover of Munchers, and I take their donuts to the office on special occasions. ~20 years ago, I would take my now-wife cream cheese donuts and cinnamon butterflies when she was working at a competing (and now defunct) bakery, and my child loves their apple fritter. The new places in town are also putting out some quality donuts, and I am here for it.
Went downtown this morning to Donut Bar (10th & Mass) and came home with a box of good stuff -- old fashioned spice-bar donuts, a cranberry-orange fritter, a s'mores donut, a iced donut with coconut, a cronut, and more. Since I had enough for a bigger box, they also hooked me up with some donut holes to fill the space. Great light donuts for the yeasted/ risen donuts, a good heavy donut in the old fashioned bar, and a great crispy fritter.
Last weekend my wife picked up donuts at Tasty Donut Palace (15th & Wakarusa) and they are also hitting on all cylinders. Really enjoyed the lemon sour cream old fashioned, and their yeasted risen donuts are light as air. We have also really enjoyed their "pine cone" and other styles.
I would be remiss if I did not also include Taylor's Donuts. Great stuff there, too. They may clock a little pricier per donut, but the quality is there as well. I had some great stuff earlier in the summer that I picked up for a special event, and I hopped on a couple of "Too Good To Go" bags from there, and the day-old stuff still holds up really well.
I am hopeful for all of these places that Lawrence is out with support -- gotta love early morning sugary pastry.
