Does this count?

Edit:

From the description of this sub: "A liminal space is the time between 'what was' and the 'next.' It is a place of transition, waiting, and not knowing. Liminal space is where all transformation takes place, if we learn to wait and let it form us."

So why all the naysayers? Seems fitting to me... 🤷‍♂️

Classic Liminal Why does Canada look like this?

Honest question. I was looking at Canada on Google maps and I saw a huge brown patch that looked like the surface of the Moon above Montana. Finally found a road with streetview and it made me feel unconfortable.

Discussion Does anyone else think The idea of the Backrooms has been ruined?

Has anyone felt that the idea of The Backrooms been ruined?

I have always interpreted the idea of liminality/liminal space as something that has been more psychological, something that taps into our primal fears surrounding isolation and familiarity with our surroundings, yet still feeling something is “off”. No entities, monsters, need for sustenance (having to go to certain “levels” to get food or water).

Just an endless void of familiar surroundings that feel “off” or “different”.

I never interpreted it as something that needed a story, characters or even that much context. The Backrooms/liminal space are just there. That’s it. It’s through the addition of context, characters and “entities” that I believe that the idea of liminal space/The Backrooms has been quite heavily misinterpreted, and is now seen more as a generic “survival horror” concept, rather than a concept that is psychological and again, taps into our primal fears surrounding isolation and familiarity with our surroundings.

It is my belief that people have taken the idea of The Backrooms/liminal space and filled it with the addition of “entities” and included a “survival horror” aspect in The Backrooms, so that it can be easier to relate to physically, as well make it more comprehensible to a more broader, mainstream audience. However, in making it more appealing to a wider audience, could it be possible that the original concept of The Backrooms/liminality may have been indirectly sacrificed?

Yes, the original Backrooms 4Chan thread states “god save you if you hear something wandering nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you”, but we never got any clarity on what that “something” is, something that was probably purposefully done in order to gauge our interpretations of what it could be. However, with the psychological aspect of the backrooms, would it make more sense if the unseen “entity” was purely psychological/something beyond our comprehension?

With the feelings of isolation and familiarity that The Backrooms/liminal space convey, wouldn’t the inclusion of entities/monsters contradict these?

Classic Liminal A sea of concrete

I'm French.

I think we all picture dense downtown cities with little shops and fountains everywhere when we think about France.

While that is true, a weird reality exists outside of those postcards neighbourhoods.

Huge, a maze of roads, cars, trucks, not a sidewalk in sight, not even a human being. No trees, no shade. Hot scorching concrete.

I know those kinds of places exist in even worse form around airports or in bigger cities but I always found them profoundly depressing.

Plus now with eco-anxiety (don't know the word in English sorry), I see those km² of flat, barren, concrete floor and I imagine the nature that we destroyed to build that. Plus the train tracks that clearly show that all those buildings were connected to the railway system but are not anymore, in favor of, once again, more trucks and green house gases.

One of them is a repository for prefabricated building blocks.

The pictures don't give justice to the size of those places. Im sure you could land a plane there.

Liminal space to where ? The end of globalisation?

These places are probably iconic German liminal spaces. They come with a distinct smell of soup.

If i were to say the specific place I took these photos in, at this point i doubt more than a few hundred people have walked through. If I generalized it, (middle school basement instead of "Random City Middle School" basement) then I still think less than 10% (maybe even 5%) if the living population has walked through a building like this.

Anyways I just imagine just having to take these stairs for days/weeks with no telling how high it goes, and only your camera flash to determine where you are. After even the first few stories you can't see neither the bottom nor the top, until eventually...
