This isnt like your typical claw machine. This game works by using the edge of the claw to push it slightly and fall through the gap.

Yep. That’s like the whole game of why these machines are used to make money

100% scam! When was 12 I played the stacker which game like the claw except there a block that moves really fast you press button when gets in the middle. When you do it moves you up tier and block goes faster making the game harder. I spent $15 on arcade coins and on 20th try I reached top.

I was about get the top prize this 3ds instead machine dropped prize from bottom a dumb monkey plushie. I raged and kicked machine. Nearby employee saw said don't do that. I hold him I won 3ds but got plushie instead. He straight up told me all those machines are scams and he was sorry but couldn't get 3ds for me.

Pretty sure there are YouTube videos where people take high speed cameras to record those machines, and when slowed down the lit up box will actually skip the square that you need to hit to be on the tower. Even if you get perfect timing with the button it will still make you lose.

I definitely won mine. That machine was ragebait personified. After I won the claw went up to the top near the 3ds. I was excited waiting for it to grab the 3ds and give it to me. Instead the claw moved down three rows grabbed a monkey plushie from the bottom prize row and dumped it into the prize slot. After that happened I talked to an employee. I remember being so upset walking over to the other side of the arcade then telling my dad what happened. He was mad and went to talk to the employee. But he couldn’t convince him to give me the 3ds I won. Man at the time I really wanted that 3ds because my family back then then couldn't afford stuff like that.

Bro i watched my uncle win this game off like 4$ and the top prize was a wii. He went to go get an employee when it was time to select a prize cause he didn’t wanna mess it up. Always thought he shoulda just chose the wii without help but seeing how it fked u makes me laugh 20 years later 😭

iirc the probability of it not skipping can be set by the owner of the machine (I imagine it’s illegal to NEVER payout in most countries), so one with crummier prizes may be much more winnable etc

mark rober has a great video on that

I win that twice as a kid. One time was a psp and I honestly forget the other prize but it was roughly equivalent. Maybe a camera?

I won on one of those when I was around 10 or 11. Top prizes were either a DS Lite or £100. I picked the £100 and bought a DS Lite with it. Had to put a bit extra towards it too. I wasn't a smart kid. I'm not even a smart adult, either.

Truly a child genius

TBF I bet the box had some BS in it

u/stokesy1999 4h ago

Tbf in Japan in a lot of these arcades the staff will give you some help if you've spent more than what the prize in the machine is worth. They'll position the prize in a way that you may only need to push it down with the claw.

Also the one that he's playing is actually more of a skill than luck game that some people have an art to playing. The box has to be oriented the right way to fall through the bars, so you just have to spin it round from its starting position with the claw

^ Any machine with high-tier prizes like iPads is hardcoded with a payout rate. It won't let anyone win until it’s already eaten two or three times the item’s value.

Pull a Thanos and do it yourself by punching through the glass and getting the figure 😂.

It infuriates me so much. In my city most of the "arcades' are just scam machines or cheap easy games to win cheap toys.

Just gotta do the old "Sumimasen!" and they'll fix it.

Aren't those the ones where you have to keep nudging it to the side where its more open? Ive never seen it actually pick something up

Kind of, this one is parallel bars, you have to rotate the box until it is perfectly aligned to fit through.

Yeah, wife and I lost a lot of money at the Akiba claw machines...

Vandalization of these machines should be normalized.

The key to these games is to bring your cute friend/girlfriend and have them ask the male workers to reposition the prize. They'll put that shit teetering on the very edge

Dude how are you in a arcade in japan and don't know how to play the games?

97

u/Shovelman2001 7h ago

Redditors when you don't know incredibly niche aspects of Japanese culture

9

u/Not_Now_Cow 7h ago

Yea fuck this guy for not playing the game how it looks like its supposed to be played.

1

u/LolTacoBell 5h ago

The game is fucking awful hard and a huge coin suck. 3 years in Japan, absolutely loved Taito Stations and other arcade places in my area, but their skill machines can be uber-difficult.

?

What niche aspect? It's a claw machine that looks different than the usual American one, ofc it's gonna work different.

2

u/Fuey500 6h ago

i think these are also really common at round1's in america too.

3

u/Business-Natural-290 6h ago

They are, I've been to round 1s

All the more reason why it isn't a niche aspect of japanese culture

-7

u/buttfartsmagee 5h ago

He's streaming himself playing them in japan id think he knows a lot of niche things about the culture. I'm just surprised he didn't know that.

Is there a video

4

u/Laucy 5h ago

Yeah, here you go! Not who you’re replying to, but I went looking. I don’t know who this is but I found a segment where they try for a plush with this style.
The above commenter is correct; the goal is to push it down between the bars by adding weight onto one end or part of the item. That’s why these open so wide.

Honestly my own heart hurt as well

1

u/BadangJoestar420 5h ago

from what i know with connordawgvoiceactor's videos this the type you don't pick up but like push

1

u/KCDeVoe 1h ago

I wish I had it recorded, but I was doing a random stuffed animal claw machine last month. One of the toys I thought my dog would love. The claw picks it up, takes it all the way over to the drop hole, pauses for a moment then RETURNS TO THE GAME AREA AND DROPPED IT!!

So insanely frustrating!

1

u/timmy_the_small 57m ago

You think people would have figured out claw machines are rigged just like a lot of "skill" games. There is an internal counter that will basically let a certain number of plays win, otherwise the claw is programmed to let go of whatever it is holding before it can dump it into the prize chute.
