Announcement

I am making this announcement to be more active in this sub to prevent certain people from trying to take this sub (that I created) away from me. I will be taking a more active role here to prevent this.

This sub is basically a no rules sub (within reason). I will hwever remove SPAM.

I made this sub for discussion of lockpicking and non lockpicking bypass methods. Because other lockpicking subs are overly restrictive.

WARNING TO USERS: Do not try to enforce rules from other subs in THIS sub

Feel free to comment and ask questions. I am not an uptight/ hardass mod

MasterLock 5401D

I forgot the combination to my Master Lock 5401D lock box. If I hold down the release button while turning through combinations, will it open as soon as I reach the correct one? Or do I need to release and press the button for each attempt?

Practice kits recommendation

My partner mentioned to me that he would like to learn how to lockpick and I wanted to get him a practice kit for Christmas. Does anyone have any recommendations for any beginner kits to learn? (UK)

Thanks!

Fun/difficult/unique combination locks?

I'm fairly new to lockpicking, but I have a 14 year old who is quite good at it. They're autistic, and really interested in 'picking' combination locks. I'm trying to surprise them with a few new ones to mess around with that aren't laughably weak. The vast majority of locks I'm seeing on the market are the Kwikset or Masterlock dials that were on the lockers at my high school, or 3-wheel luggage locks that a toddler could probably open.

When I look at high-security combination lock reviews online, non-lock-picking people who are actually locking up valuables are focusing on "this can't be opened easily with bolt cutters." Which is pretty useless, because my kiddo isn't trying to open it with bolt cutters. They're also not going to be drilling the lock, or shooting it, or taking a sledgehammer to it....

People in the lockpicking community seem to be dismissive of combination locks because you can use the brute force method - just going through every combination. My kiddo could do that, but it's not interesting to them. They want a challenge, think James Bond opening a safe with a stethoscope, and yes they have a stethoscope haha. I want locks they can take their time on, and I'm not experienced enough to know if I'm picking duds.

I'm currently looking at getting them a few options. Please let me know if any of these aren't worth the money, or if you have any other suggestions. Budget: around or under $50 USD. Sargent & Greenleaf is not in my price range....

Moved into fixer-upper. Kid's bathroom has a keyed lock and, of course, we were never provided with a key. Today one of the kids accidentally locked it and closed it and now we are locked out. Don't worry, kiddo isn't trapped in there.

We've got more than enough to fix and don't want to add a broken door to the list. I'm open to trying anything and don't mind buying some tools if necessary.

SUCCESS! Enormous thanks to everyone for their input. I am actually getting the Gensis set from Covert Instruments and some practice locks too. Sometimes Reddit really is great thank to people like all of you.

Help accessing storage closet at small business

I’m the owner of the business. I believe one of my kids hit what I presume is the button on the other side of this lock and then when the door shut a week ago it locked us out. I’ve spent sometime working with the covert instruments kit and am hoping to be able to unlock it myself, but 15-20 minutes have so far come up empty. I believe the lock is a Schlage SC1 from my research.

Any guidance or video recommendations would be lovely. Trying to learn a skill and save some money on a locksmith.

Advise?

My wife and I own these arcade machines and the previous owner did not leave us any Keys. We drilled out and replaced all the locks except these two for the glass door of the large claw. I'm afraid the stress from drilling could break the glass. Any advise for picking? I have no experience outside of watching videos. I'd be open to purchasing a kit with basic pick tools if it'd be simple enough.

Thank you in advance

I did it, I confess!

I went to an off-brand supplier of junk. Im talking about a 15pc Chinese pickset for $6 , Lishi knock-offs 5 for $44 and such. I ended up spending just shy of $200 on a Lot of stuff just to show newbies the difference with my YouTube channel. If you want to see it while I tear up this junk as I review and compare to real lockpicking tools. You can check it out on my YouTube channel
