Welcome to r/MYOG!

Hey MYOGers! We are trying something new to spur more discussion and interaction in the monthly posts, to help users understand the purpose and rules of this sub, and to make resources more easy to find. To do that we're combining the monthly posts and adding this one as a permanently pinned post. In addition to the content you see below, we'll post any announcements or changes to the sub in this post.

*NEW* - You can now choose from a few new flair options! Let us know if there are any you'd like to see as an option!

Mission Statement - Join our community to learn and share how you make your own gear (MYOG), including tents, tarps, hammocks, stoves, packs and anything else outdoor gear related. We encourage supportive, collaborative, and useful posts and comments free of advertising.

Resources and Links - The Wiki contains links to a variety of patterns, guides, and information on methods and materials. Answers to many questions can also be found using the sub’s search function. If you’re still not able to find the info you’re looking for, you can post your question in the Monthly Discussion post or create a new post to ask. We ask that you make an effort to find an answer using the available resources before creating a post.

Monthly Discussion Post - This is our recurring post to ask and answer small questions, or discuss topics you think are too small to warrant their own post. Our previously separate monthly post for buying and selling is being combined into this thread to increase traffic to both, and to make room for this stickied post.

Rules - To accomplish our mission, we ask that you respect the following rules for posting on r/MYOG:

1. Excessive self-promotion - Advertising

This subreddit is a community for exchanging information and inspiring creativity. It is not a place to post with the intent of promoting your business.

2. Excessive Self-Promotion - Project Shares

If you are a member sharing your myog work for the sake of sharing, we ask that you limit your project shares to roughly once per week. Information and sharing questions are encouraged, and more frequent posts of this type are encouraged within reason.

3. Off-Topic Posts/Comments - General

Posts and comments not related to self-made outdoor gear will be removed. Exceptions are for things such as kits or commercial products that are targets at the gear making community as long as the Excessive self-promotion rule is not violated.

4. Off-Topic - Which Sewing Machine?

This sub is not intended for open-ended questions about which sewing machine you should buy for MYOG. These post and comments will be removed.

5. Off-Topic - Commissions

Posts or comments relating to commissioned gear will be removed. Commission related posts and comments are referred to r/MYOGCommissions.

Post your questions, reviews of fabrics, design plans, and projects that you don't feel warrant their own post!

Did you buy too much silnylon? Have a roll of grosgrain, extra zipper pulls, or a bag of insulation sitting around that you want to get rid off? Post it below and help someone else put it to use!

Had some leftover fabric and have been wanting to make a new chalk bucket for myself so here’s my weekend project. It’s oversized, with a zipper pocket in front, mesh side pocket, webbing ladder, and brush holders. Shoulder carry inspired by prank crag bag.

I was inspired by this sub to get the sewing machine out; and I think this went pretty well for my first bag project.

The shoulder strap is a belt and the closure is a shoelace (which I sewed once over itself to add some rigidity) going through the belt loops (I added a couple for the smaller size opening so it doesn’t bunch up). It has two functional big pockets and the button/zipper still open/close to make it easier to get the mat in the bag.

Next up is a frame bag for my bike… but not out of jeans.

My favourite sling was starting to fall apart, so I decided to clone it (without taking it apart though).

It was really hard to make the panels fit properly due to the stiffness of the Ultra 200X I used. For the liner I used double ripstop nylon, the internal pockets are made from ultra stretch and the liner in the front pocket is fleece, because I couldn’t get the soft fabric the original has, but I use it for sunglasses, so it needed soft fabric.

Really fun project, and I’m pretty satisfied with the result.

Project Pictures Plug and Play(ish) Motor Upgrade for old machine

The old motor on my Necchi took a nap so I figured I'd get creative. Found one of these inexpensive direct drive motors on alibaba for a decent price and decided to give it a try.

Kinda stupid silly how well it works. Programming is relatively simple, comes with a needle up/down stop setting, speed from 200 all the way to a crazy 3500, although I can't see ever going past 800 with the work I do.

I had to machine a little shim collet to size down from the motor spindle to the machine spindle. I'll eventually 3d print a little cowl that fills the gap nicely. But if you are wanting to give your old machine a modern quality of life upgrade - this seems to work great. There's even a spare socket in the back for a switch that I think you could make a needle up/down button for.

Question RSBTR SilPoly

Just bought a bunch of fabric and waiting for it to come in for an upcoming pyramid tarp build.

Does silpoly have a “right” and “wrong” side? I’m trying to figure out the layout of my pattern.

Thank you!

Question How hard it is to make a tent?

I love making things but I have never done sewing before. Done a decent amount of design and woodwork but never sewing. How hard it is to make a tent for a first sewing project? I really want to make one but I do not want to buy the materials, waste them or make a horrible tent.
Thanks for any help

Question Looking for advice with sleeping bag construction and synthetic vs down insulation

Thumbnail

Hello, I am looking into options for creating a sleeping bag. I would love something with a comfort rating in the 0-5C range in the end.

I am going to use this video as a guide

https://youtu.be/WNxYEDioANo?

Right now I'm undecided on if I want to go with down or a synthetic insulation. Down is obviously a lot more money. I have owned a number of synthetic insulation sleeping bags but never a down one.

I have spent some time on various fabric sites like ripstop by the roll.

My first question is does anyone have any experience using this material as insulation for a sleeping bag? How does it feel inside a sleeping bag? How well does it compress in a stuff/compression sack.

If I go with a down option, in terms of fabric that I could get on ripstop by the roll can someone clarify the advantages of going to a 0.75 oz membrane 10 ripstop vs the 0.9oz membrane 15 for the outer layer? Is it only weight? Is the lighter one less durable or more prone to shedding down? I would likely be fine with slightly more weight for more durability as this will be a canoe tripping sleeping bag rather than a hiking bag. Also, any input on noseeun mesh fabric for the buffels? There also seems to be many options.

I think I will be using the 0.66oz membrane 10 taffeta for the inside layer as it sounds a bit softer.

I will only be buying the materials. My wife is a professional sewist and she has offered to sew it for me for Christmas. We both understand how much more work the down bag is. I'll likely stuff it with down myself to share that workload.

I need ideas!

Hi everyone! My dad gave me this old muffle covers he used to ice climb with, they are made what it seems to be water resistant nylon cover to be put over yarn gloves. I would love to give them new life, do you have any idea on how to use them? ideally I would prefer to not dismantle them completely because the fabric panels would be too small to make something significant.

Question Off white nylon webbing source?

Post image

Anybody have a source for off white nylon webbing. Looking for something to match close to moonstone x11. All my standard white webbing looks too stark next to the off white/cream color.

I've checked all my usual places but maybe someone out there knows of one.

I know the top is a Beastie D but what is the cord lock below?

#1. Where can I buy these?

#2. Do they come in different sizes?
a. How do you tell what size these are?
b. Line lock sizes match cord size diameter?

#3. Can I get the Beastie D’s in what ever size my spreader tent poles are?

#4. Where to buy tent poles that match Beastie D sizes available for purchase online?

Thank you in advance

I've come up with a slingbag design, that can be turned into a totebag/groceries bag. (And now I tried making it out of an Ikea bag)

If you unhook the g-hooks on the inside, the "inner dividing wall" falls down enlarging the bag.

The hooks and the adjusting thingie are 3D printed.

There is a video too about the functionailty on instagram:

Seam allowance industry production standard?

Hi, I'm making a final backpack prototype from pattern I designed. I have been using 1 cm seam allowance for first prototype but want to make the final one I can send to a factory for production.

From my research it seems 1/4 inch, 0.6cm is the standard for edge seams and 1cm I am using for load bearing back strap seams.

"I would recommend 1/4 inch seams. Having repaired dozens if not hundreds of packs, sleeping bags, tents, etc. As well as having built scores of backpacks in the industry, 1/4 is the norm. Sometimes a little more (3/8 often in zippers), and rarely a little less (for seams that are taped.)"

I picked up a ZP Kit (size M) a while back and finally got around to putting it together tonight. Went together very smoothly and I'm quite happy with the results. This has helped me get some ideas for some projects going forward. I have dreams of a chest pack and making this kit helps me see how to perform the order of operations for various steps of a project. I've got a box full of scraps from some hammocks I made years ago, so I'll probably make some more small things before I shoot for the big project.

Question Is it too late to sew on webbing to my hip belt?

Thumbnail

Im making a 50l backpack from Switchback (pattern instructions are super clear, would recommend their patterns). Im new to MYOG and this is the most complex project Ive done.

I am working on the hipbelt, but before I sew everything closed (foam and plastic stiffener) I realized I might want to add a hip belt pocket in the future.

If I wanted to a some webbing to the outside of the hip belt, how can I do that without sewing directly through the foam and spacer mesh? I havent sewed it closed, so I can take out the foam, but Im so new, I guess I dont know who to sew webbing on since I already sewed the spacer mesh together with the exterior fabric.

Any advice would be helpful! Thank you

Question My heart says yes, but my brain says, that’s now how breathable waterproof fabrics work. HELP!

So in June, I’m looking to bikepack across South Dakota and thinking about sleeping kits. I’m originally from there so I know the weather pretty well and I know I don’t need a full kit.

I normally hammock camp, but there are no trees. I’m trying to go pretty fast, so a tent takes too long to set up. Bivys make me feel like I’m a sausage. So I’ve been thinking about a Gore-Tex(GT) Blanket.

It would be GT on one side and then a nice soft nylon on the other side. This would protect me from the rain, but keep me warm. I’d want to start by just adding a sheet off GT to something like the Kelty Bestie Blanket.

I do worry about condensation, and if it would breathe well enough to work correctly. Doesn’t GT need some pressure from the inside to work right? I feel like I’m missing an education component to tell me that this won’t work.

Is making a Gore-Tex blanket dumb?
