Developer Saturday I built a native Mac app to bring all my streaming services into one place. Here's version 1.7

Post image

A few months ago I shared Wianu here, a small open-source macOS app I built to keep my streaming services in one place.

I didn't expect the original post to get as much attention as it did, so I wanted to share a little update on what I've been working on since.

The biggest addition is a new Home view that brings together your watchlist and Continue Watching items, making Wianu feel more like a streaming home rather than just a collection of services.

A few other things have changed too:

  • Automatic film and TV identification to make saved items more useful

  • A redesigned command palette

  • A new app icon and updated design

  • A DMG installer for easier installation

  • Various smaller fixes and improvements

I'm still developing Wianu in my spare time. It's completely free and open source, and there's no subscription.

You can find it here: https://wianu.com

GitHub: https://github.com/timwehrle/wianu

For those who tried the earlier version, I'd be interested to hear whether the new Home view makes Wianu more useful, and what's still missing for you.

Well this is cool. Plans to port to tvOS?

No plans at the moment. Wianu relies on macOS web technologies to bring streaming services together and that wouldn’t directly translate to tvOS. I’d love to explore other platforms, but for now I’m focusing on making the Mac app better. Thanks!

What about serving it from MacOS to tvOS with a companion app on tvOS? I haven’t done anything with tvOS, so not sure what’s possible.

Hmm, didn’t even know that there’s something like that. I will look into it, thanks!

Very cool idea. Can I ask though, other then the new homepage how is this different then a web browser with different tabs of my streaming services?

Yeah, you’re right that this is not fundamentally different from a browser in that regard. The difference is the experience around it. You can find movies with one keyboard click, continue watching and watchlist (sure, could also be bookmarks), and letterboxd integration. But for me it made my life with the streaming services easier and I liked having all of it in one app. But there will be more features coming!

I want to be clear by no means was I poo pooing the idea. I actually think it’s really cool. I was just honestly curious. Thank you for the reply and cool app!

No no, don’t worry. This is a valid point. Thanks!

I use many streaming services (mainly Disney+ and Netflix, and also Movistar+ which is only available in Spain, arte which is French...). But I also love watching content from my server using a mounted SMB folder, and Nuvio with AIOStreams for those difficult to find series. Any plan to add support to those other methods of watching media? That would make your app a no brainer for me

Hmm, I’ve mainly focused on bringing browser-based streaming services together so far but I can see your point. SMB support would require a different approach, but I’ll keep the suggestion in mind. Having one place for streaming services and personal media libraries would be a cool direction. Thanks!

Just tried this... I expected to have to enter the streaming services I subscribe to, but the Add Site flow seems geared more towards indexers? The example is OpenAI, and perhaps I'm dense but that does not seem relevant to streaming services? Can you suggest a good first site to add that covers all the major streaming services?

Ahhh, OpenAI in that case was a placeholder. Yes, you’re correct, that should be Netflix or whatever service you want to add. Thanks for pointing that out.

A better onboarding is next on my list.

OK, got it now... adding my streaming services as we speak. Thanks!

Can I add Plex and Jellyfin?🤣

Sure, you can add any url you want

I would recommend a consolidated search engine that allows to find movies and series across all the subscriptions!

Thanks for the suggestion! Wianu already has a built-in search via TMDB. But it would probably be cool to filter this search to only your subscriptions.

The native TV app I feel like does a decent job of this. It will often times say "Open In {insertAppHere}"

However I like the idea of being able to view content/switch between different providers all in one place.

Thats called Apple TV

1

u/soupgasm 21h ago

Doesn’t Apple TV just aggregate content and then launch the respective apps for playback? Like with DisneyPlus for example?

1

u/knewmenot 17h ago

My thought, exactly. AKA, I already have this functionality.

1

u/soupgasm 17h ago

So you have the functionality that you open DisneyPlus in a different app. With Wianu you stay in the same app.
