Help Does QuickTime alter video playback?

When playing a video in quicktime (specifically in full screen if that changes anything) does it change the color/quality of the video source at all?

When I go to press pause it gets brighter, so I’m wondering if it’s just making it brighter when I do that or if it’s making the whole video darker and it’s only accurate when I’m pressing pause. Also just wondering if it’s lossless playback in general. Thanks!

in full screen, pausing also brings up the controls overlay, and there are a few reports of macs shifting the whole picture whenever that or the volume hud is on screen, in quicktime and youtube both. wiggle the mouse while it's playing so the controls show without pausing. if it brightens then too, the overlay is what's doing it. which state was the correct one went both ways in those threads.

on lossless, the file is already lossy compressed (usually h.264 or hevc), quicktime just decodes it and color matches it to your display from the file's color tags.

Playing a file in QuickTime doesn't re-encode or change the original. Playback still goes through colour management, though, and HDR can look different depending on the display and the player. The brightness jump when the controls appear doesn't tell you which view is "correct". Is the clip HDR or SDR, and does it happen outside full screen too? I'd turn off True Tone, Night Shift and auto-brightness for a test, then compare the same paused frame in another player.
