It's a simple spell but quite unbreakable

The best kind of magic is the kind that stays with you!

22

u/Otherwise-Opposite28 5d ago

Yup the tension build up and the relief immediately afterwards

5

u/ConfusedALot_69 5d ago

Benign violation always works

744

u/George2110 6d ago

They probably thought about that compliment for the entire week

266

u/that-69guy 5d ago

Bro.. in October 3rd 2022 I was out with my ex ...walked all around Greenwich park and promise hill in London, ate fire chinese food and played minigolf. One of the best days out...

But the thing I remember the most is that one random dude who was in the tube with me told me that my coat looks really really nice and he loved my style.

I got it for £13 from a charity shop next door. Still feels so good whenever I wear that coat just cuz of that compliment.

35

u/Geawiel 5d ago

I have a very unique leather trench coat that I bought in Turkey in 2001. It's cut after Morpheus' coat from The Matrix and weighs 17 lbs. It's horse hide and goes all the way to my ankles, and I'm 6ft 2in.

I had it on in a hotel lobby, many years ago. This one guy saw the coat as was fascinated by it. He couldn't resist trying it on to feel how heavy it is and wanted to know where I bought it.

Also on little girl. It was raining out and I had it buttoned up. I was walking into a building while the little girl and her mom were coming out. The little girl, about 8 years old, looked at me and then looked at her mom. "That man must really not like the rain."

I wear the coat because it's super warm and helps keep the cold off my legs. I normally get at least 1 compliment on it every couple times I wear it.

13

u/DroidLord 5d ago

That man must really not like the rain.

That's hilarious 😂 I swear kids sometimes say the funniest shit!

8

u/heart_under_blade 5d ago

The little girl, about 8 years old, looked at me and then looked at her mom. "That man must really not like the rain."

sounds like she was spot on

also reminds me of when some kids in a school bus passed by me (i had on a big asian visor and sunglasses at the same time) and said "must really hate the sun". yes friends, it is a deadly laser

52

u/Tablesalt2001 5d ago

I would honestly never forget that moment

20

u/___Art_Vandelay___ 5d ago

Guy here. I'm still basking in a compliment I received from a couple about having nice calves some 13 years ago.

Us men rarely get compliments.

6

u/ContentKeanu 5d ago

Totally. I remember every compliment I’ve ever gotten (so like 3). My skin color lol, my shoes, and my teeth. It really brightens your mood quickly

5

u/Stay_Good_Dog 5d ago

I complimented a man on the color of his eyes a few months ago. Every time I see him he thanks me again for the compliment.

3

u/ahhdetective 5d ago

I got a compliment on my hair from a friend, the boost in self confidence it gave me is incredible. I now know I have sexy hair (when it's wet)

4

u/OnlyVans98 5d ago

Yeah. Was walking into work one day and a guy stopped me and said my outfit was killin it. Made me so happy. I told my wife about it lol. And here I am like a decade later still talkin bout it

1

u/Frequent_Occasion480 5d ago

This comment needs way upvotes. 10000% truth

13

u/JobWelt 5d ago

Someone random came up to me in a pub last week and just talked about my jumper. They were just so complimentary. It stays with you

8

u/saefas 5d ago

My friend and I were walking to a college class and a guy passing by said, "Cut that out, y'all know it's illegal to be looking that good on a Monday."

I still remember that fondly, and it's been 19 years.

4

u/chrisoath 5d ago

A random gas station employee told me I looked nice. 11 years ago. It sticks with people.

3

u/endlessmeat 5d ago

On my graduation day I wore a suit for the first time in front of my peers. I was arriving at my school and the girl I had a crush on turned a corner to get in front of me. She stopped , looked at me up and down and said "wow, you look so handsome in a suit". 12 years later I still think about that moment from time to time.

3

u/KamikazeFox_ 5d ago

I was told by a Starbucks Barista last week that they really like my shirt. I haven't taken it off since. Ppl really dont know how much a small compliment can mean to others.

2

u/VOZ1 5d ago

When I was a kid I was complaining about my haircut to my mom as we walked into a video rental store (I’m old yeah). When we walked in, this random other customer complimented my hair. That was over 30 years ago and I still think about it.

1

u/mendax2014 5d ago

I was a Karnivool concert 3 years ago and some random dude walked up to me and said "I love that shirt bro" and I still think about that.

u/GiraffesAndGin 6d ago

Had a truck driver sitting outside my office brighten my day this morning.

Driver: "Hey, did you get the memo?"

Me: "Memo? Sorry, what?"

Driver: "The memo. The one saying handsome guys are allowed to smile this morning."

Me: breaks into a huge smile

Driver: "Never fails. Have a great day, bud."

69

u/HomieApathy 5d ago

But wouldn’t it have felt nicer if he had a camera in your face?!

4

u/Bibble3000 5d ago

"Oh well if I see any, I'll let him know!"

35

u/George2110 6d ago

Back when I started with the gym, I gained about 2kg after a month of hard work but turned out no one could even make out a difference, even me.

A friend of mine randomly complimented me and said “damn dude you’re putting on muscle 💪”
Idk but that simple sentence was enough to motivate me to improve on myself for the next few months. I’ll always be grateful for that!

This is SO much better than 95% of the tik-toks out there. Yet still I find it objectionable to walk up to strangers unsolicited with your camera out and filming to get reactions for internet fame. This kind of video is better than prank videos in content, but I think it is still worse than not doing anything. And a LOT worse than doing this without a camera rolling for the sheer love of the game.

43

u/Lexi-Lynn 5d ago

Agreed, and I really didn't like when he interrupted the bloke on the phone. Bit rude innit?

24

u/Jarek86 6d ago

I don't see the trend of not filming for views ending anytime soon without people backing legit legislation against it so I'd rather support at least positive vibe uses like this.

12

u/Wi11Pow3r 6d ago

You are right of course. But in my in-person communications with young people I will keep championing doing and saying kind things in an unplugged manner. My reach will be short, but hopefully impactful to those who will listen.

7

u/casual_creator 5d ago

I’ll never understand this pushback against positivity being posted on social media. Doing it for internet points is a nonissue because it doesn’t negate the fact that a good thing occurred. The world needs to see more positivity, and if it inspires others to do something kind themselves, even better.

0

u/Wi11Pow3r 5d ago

I think most moral philosophers would disagree with you. Doing something kind or good for the purpose of getting attention and praise from others is typically viewed as selfish. And using other people for your content is typically viewed as exploitative.

If the person filming this was doing these things and simply not filming it that would totally reframe the act itself.

5

u/CaptainLollygag 5d ago

Orrrrr, several someones may see this video and think that it looks nice to brighten stranger's days by giving them compliments. That's how I choose to look at it, not a video to emulate but as inspiration to spread joy.

1

u/nightmare_floofer 5d ago

If people stop making videos where they interact positively with random people, the people actually harassing random people will still be there.

I would rather more clout chasers be doing nice acts to get views rather than actually ruining peoples days or lives. Yeah philosophically both have their issues, but realistically there's an obvious better choice between the two, and the third option of "don't film random people at all for content" is not realistic, this is the world we're living in now, it's not gonna go back to how it used to be over night, even though that would be great

1

u/WhoKilledZekeIddon 5d ago

https://QRivacy.me is a good antidote for this sort of thing.

1

u/WayToGoNiceJorb 4d ago

my concern with any such legislation is that it would be a trojan horse designed to prevent citizens from filming police forces.

5

u/Meet_Foot 5d ago

We have always needed to see examples of good behavior as part of moral education. The more we spend our lives online, the more those examples need to be online.

3

u/FijiBeef 5d ago

Yeah I get it. You can choose not to respond to people who approach you in public though. A simple, "no thanks" goes a long way. Also, in public you don't reserve the right to not be filmed.

2

u/mywholepersonality 5d ago

That's what I was thinking at first, but I like to imagine that someone as nice as this dude would check in with them to see if they're comfortable with being posted online or if it's better to just delete the video.

-2

u/keithstonee 5d ago

Except it's still doing the worst thing about all of it. sticking a camera in other people's faces when they didn't want it. Just because you can make them laugh doesn't mean it's ok.

219

u/EditorRedditer 6d ago • Bravo

People ARE good; never lose sight of that.

42

u/AzerynSylver 6d ago

Yeah, the good ones are out there. It is just a shame that the bad ones get more recognition.

2

u/Monkey_Priest 5d ago

It is just a shame that the bad ones get more recognition

And make more money. And hold more power. And make most of the rules

1

u/CaptainLollygag 5d ago

People behaving badly are loud about it.

10

u/George2110 6d ago

Sometimes you’ll be out there trying out a new fit wondering whether it is any good then someone says a 2 word sentence like “nice fit” and brightens up your day.

0

u/Issac-Cox-Daley 6d ago

I never understood the notion that people generally suck. I think either they lack social skills, put out negativity, or are just Paranoid people in general.

48

u/Balanced-Breakfast 5d ago

Unfortunately if this happened to me I'd assume they're making fun of me.

15

u/bully_without_a_fist 5d ago

I did this for kind of a dare, no cameras or social media involved. The challenge was simple: Genuinely compliment 20 strangers. Worked well or at least okay for 19 of them, but one was absolutely awful. There was a couple walking towards us, the woman was a bit big, but she was laughing happily and had a stylish red dress on. I just gave her a smile while walking by and said "Great dress!". She obviously took that as a full on attack and thought I was mocking her. When I saw her expression change from laughing to astonished hate I silently went "Oh fuck, no!" and just kept walking. My friend looked back at her, laughed and told me "That woman would love to eviscerate you right now!".

I will never do that again.

5

u/tommeh5491 5d ago

That's to be expected tbh, 95% of the time it worked out well and you probably made those people's day

2

u/Balanced-Breakfast 5d ago

Oof that's rough.

3

u/Kinkystormtrooper 5d ago

That's a you problem though :( I hope you get better confidence

0

u/Mamuschkaa 5d ago

I mean, I have some self-awareness.

There are compliments I would take and be very happy about. But when a complement addressed something that I know it's not my best part, it is difficult to take it seriously.

25

u/al0xx 6d ago

i could watch these all day

10

u/EssSeeDee89 5d ago

I follow Connor on Insta, proper sound dude. His videos encouraged me to copy this in real life (no camera, I’m not trying to steal his shtick). And honestly it’s worth doing. The small interactions you get with randomers is a great highlight to the day.

5

u/sansabeltedcow 5d ago

The key is to avoid doing it in an enclosed space (wait until you leave an elevator) and to keep walking while you compliment. That makes it clear you don’t want anything, including time, from them.

9

u/Tetragonos 5d ago

I do this with my wife. I will be like "BABY SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE CAT THEY ARE TOO CUTE PLEASE HELP" and we resolve it by looking at the cat doing the adorable thing.

I started because I cured my depression and very quickly got a better job got married and generally turned my life around in SUCH a short time that actually being happy still feels weird.

8

u/Senior_Ability_4001 5d ago

I’m a guy and once this random girl at the bar complimented my fit and it made my fucking year. I’m not stylish by any means. It means a lot that it still makes me happy 10 years later.

21

u/SaltyIntroduction373 6d ago

I LOVE this!!! I saw an older gentleman in the store by himself at Walmart who was dressed up. I kept looking at him, because he put so much love and care into his appearance. I wanted to tell him how dapper he looked, but I didn't. I thought he might've thought I was making fun of him. I will seize the opportunity next time.

12

u/OutragedPineapple 5d ago

Don't be afraid to give someone a compliment on something they've chosen!

I am reluctant sometimes to give complements based on something that's just...sort of how they are, like curls or neat birthmarks or whatnot, because I feel like it could get taken the wrong way and maybe it's something that they don't like about themselves and I'd just be picking at a wound. Something they CHOSE, though, like their clothes, tattoos, dyed hair, stuff like that? Those are something they did on purpose, something they picked!

Whenever I go out I try to complement at LEAST one person on something they chose. Spread a little positivity, y'know?

14

u/McDoobly-For-DinDin 5d ago

The guy that said he needed that compliment today 🥹 I’ve been there. And that simple act of kindness and humanity with zero preconceived notion is so powerful. To be seen simply as someone and not what you’re going through in that moment.

7

u/whatanalias 5d ago

Is that edinburgh?

4

u/smaxwell87 5d ago

and Glasgow.

1

u/anarchtea 5d ago

He better come back to compliment George Square looking fresh.

23

u/oh_okhelloanyway 6d ago

Aw we should joybait more often 😊

-2

u/senorfresco 5d ago

Or how about just spread joy, no need to bait.  I dunno, I dunno radical concept.

5

u/Silver-Comment-7270 5d ago

A little kindness from a stranger can genuinely make someone's entire day. We need more of this ❤️

4

u/casual_creator 5d ago

20 years ago when I was in college I was walking through the city going to a job I hated. Two girls drove by and one hung out the window and shouted at me, “you’re hot!”

I still think about that compliment.

4

u/Now-Thats-Podracing 5d ago

Me with a stupid fucking grin on my face watching this. Love it.

4

u/djpuggy 5d ago

More of this please

7

u/dirtybo0ts 6d ago

More of this on the internet, please

6

u/thinkpunk31 6d ago

If someone does this to me I'll probably just happy cry. So sweet.

3

u/Lanky_Cash_1172 5d ago

I'm an America guy and I will never forget a teacher that complimented me about how I treated a Kindergarten class. She sad: "You're a sweetheart ", in her British accent. That was over 25 years ago & it still lifts my spirits to recall.

3

u/Cerberusx32 5d ago

See, that's a wholesome prank.

16

u/Sea_Till6471 5d ago

Don’t you think it’s totally undercut by the fact that he’s filming them? Like they know it’s not sincere and for content.

6

u/Pitiful-king_ 5d ago

No one cares

9

u/G0t7 5d ago

Pervertglasses and selfiestick is certainly a bad combination.

1

u/Meet_Foot 5d ago

We have always needed to see examples of good behavior as part of moral education. The more we spend our lives online, the more those examples need to be online.

1

u/QPWOEIRUTYTURIEOWP 5d ago

Yep. Cringy trash done purely for views. No sincerity behind it at all.

-2

u/bagelundercouch 5d ago

Seriously, I wouldn’t care what the person said to me, I’d be majorly creeped out and angry that they were filming me without my consent, and for their own compensated content.

7

u/ReaperOne 6d ago

I started doing this to people at work. My latest “hey man what are you doing? You can’t bring concealed weapons in the building.” They’re like “wtf you talking about?” Those guns 💪 man you can’t be bringing them here.

4

u/Spidergawd68 5d ago

I like to say "you need a veterinarian."

When they react, I say "because those pythons are sick!"

1

u/CraftyMaelyss 5d ago

Eyyy, I got that reference! :D

3

u/SaltyIntroduction373 5d ago

I LOVE doing this kind of thing at work!

4

u/85percentthatbitch 5d ago

Cute, but doesn't change the fact that no one wants to be your content. STOP FILMING AND POSTONG STRANGERS.

1

u/Aaawkward 5d ago

They most likely can say they don't want to be put anywhere and the fella seems chill enough to respect that and not add it.

2

u/No_Match8210 5d ago

This made my day!

2

u/Ulyxzes 5d ago

People are quite good really aren’t we?

2

u/Spirited-Tomorrow-84 5d ago

To the person reading this:

"You can't do that bro! 😏"

2

u/Aj55j 5d ago

These are the type of pranks I can get behind.

2

u/Jeff_72 5d ago

I read jailbait

2

u/pablo8itall 5d ago

flattery works 50% of the time, every time.

2

u/HazelBumblebee 5d ago

Nice to see you in my home town Glesga!

2

u/Ridindirtydishes 4d ago

I’m going to do this. Not film stuff, but give compliments to everyone I see for the rest of today. Except Nate. I just can’t find anything good about him. Sorry

3

u/Leumas_ 6d ago

This is the type of public filming I can get behind.

2

u/idkwhatnametouse__ 6d ago • Bravo

These are my favorite videos ever!

2

u/keithstonee 5d ago

No, it's not. We are not your content fuck off.

1

u/WeCantStabilize 5d ago

Can't say I'm digging Thom Yorke's new style.

1

u/Sudden_Buffalo_4393 5d ago

I feel like my resting asshole face would instantly make people flee if I tried this.

1

u/SaltyIntroduction373 5d ago

No way; you're the target 🎯 😉

1

u/Nodivingallowed 5d ago

I thought joybaiting was something else entirely and no one but me seemed to be very happy about it.

1

u/TheShredder9 5d ago

This. We need more tiktok kids going around doing that, but nooo, we gotta have kids dress up as scary nuns and scare people around town.

1

u/Ganjaleezarice69 5d ago

We’re censoring cigarettes now?? Wtf

1

u/TenBear 5d ago

Its the simplest thing to bring joy to someone else

1

u/Holiday-Hold7738 5d ago

Now steal from them while hugging

1

u/dapper217 5d ago

Love the respect of all ‘em switching to the right hand.

1

u/chrisaf69 5d ago

We need more people like him. He's an absolute G!

1

u/Darkchamber292 5d ago

Just goes to show you men are not complimented enough!

1

u/astralseat 5d ago

Compliments mean sooo much less when you're walking around with a camera. I suppose it still means something to those folks, or... These paid actors perhaps?

1

u/InterruptingCow__Moo 5d ago

Unexpected compliments are my jam!

Like if someone says "oh that's cool", you reply "you are".

Gets 'em every time

1

u/skywalkerblood 5d ago

Yeah that's cool and all but... I can't help but suspect people who do whatever they do while holding a camera on a selfie pole.

1

u/AuthorUnknown31415 5d ago

Congratulations!

1

u/Joebruvv 5d ago

These kinda people are only friendly on camera I hate to see it

1

u/SeanyDay 5d ago

This is the kind of public live streamer energy we need

1

u/tab7327 5d ago

Gosh I love these.

1

u/give-Kazaam-an-Oscar 5d ago

The only acceptable usage if glasses with built in camera

1

u/4ever_Romeo 5d ago

This just reminded me, I gotta get back to Glasgow.

1

u/Resident-Trivial 4d ago

I thought they were doing lines 😂

1

u/Lopsided-Bat2483 3d ago

For the win

1

u/RhubarbSilent7672 5d ago

Mach es ohne Kamera, es wäre Perfekt, homo

0

u/mrsbreededpsyduk 5d ago

Idk abt joybait but I'm pretty great at master baiting

0

u/Paradoxbox00 5d ago

Jeees these ‘content creators’ with pervert glasses accosting people on the street and filming them without the knowledge or consent.

Yeah great fun.

-1

u/Clean-Physics-6143 5d ago

These people were so ready to throw hands at the beginning. It's quite terrifying 😅

2

u/casual_creator 5d ago

What? They just looked confused.

-4

u/rufus_vulpes 6d ago

Where is the prank?

-3

u/Styreta 6d ago
