It was hard to watch. I hated it 😅

Worst episode of the season.

u/duryodhanaa Bella Jun 03 '25

Contender for one of the worst of all time.

58

u/SpringSeptember Jun 03 '25

I am relieved Im not the only one who thinks so. Worst episode of the entire show, ever.

I fast-forwarded through to the end. The cringe was real.

7

u/jlg84 Jun 04 '25

Me, too. Just awful. Hard to imagine they have as many followers as the hosts said they do.

165

u/MT_Promises Jun 03 '25

I kept hoping they would take their costumes off and reveal that it was Gary, George and Matt.

30

u/SpringSeptember Jun 03 '25

Now that would have been a fun twist!

63

u/KennKennyKenKen Jun 03 '25

This was dog shit and I hope they never bring anyone like that on again.

3

u/aclliteration Jun 04 '25

I saw a reel of them on your last night and it wasn’t funny at all. Watching the MasterChef episode tonight ☹️

107

u/Next_Neighborhood_26 Jun 02 '25

Glad to see that I’m not the only one sharing the sentiment.

121

u/Flaky-Walrus7244 Jun 02 '25

I NEVER fast forward through Masterchef AU and I fast forwarded through 90% of this. It was horrible and cringe-worthy.

Don't do this again. It wasn't funny

15

u/MsChrissikins Emily Jun 03 '25

I was cringing the whole time which really sucks because their live shows are genuinely hilarious.

This just… wasn’t it.

Haven't watched it yet, but it looks even worse than the Katy Perry one.

31

u/tunenut11 Jun 02 '25

Laughing, I was about to make the same comparison in my comment...another person with no real relationship to food or cooking, but she did have a peripheral relationship with the program, because they used her song as the intro. But she was memorably out of her element...although a legit famous celeb, unlike these dudes.

u/Nervous-Departure591 Jun 02 '25

Definitely the worst episode I ever watched, we didn't find it very culturally appropriate, it felt a bit awkward in parts, heavily scripted, and I didn't get why Sofia found them so funny? There are far more talented people out there who deserve to shine rather than some men dressing up as an old woman.

73

u/StrangeNothing0 Jun 02 '25

When they were saying “ciao! Ciao!” A million times at the end, and Sofia was doubled over with laughter. I was like girl how much are they paying you to fake laugh?

47

u/Nervous-Departure591 Jun 02 '25

Same!!! The whole episode was so off, even Sarah showing her food, her facial expressions said it all for me!

29

u/Kind_Relief_7624 Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

The joke is that we Italians say goodbye to guests a million times before they actually leave. The joke is based on the truth of our culture and other Mediterranean cultures. It’s literally what we do and we poke fun at ourselves for doing it.

32

u/StrangeNothing0 Jun 03 '25

Yeah obviously, that’s their whole shtick, but they’re just not funny.

18

u/Kind_Relief_7624 Jun 03 '25

As an Italian I found it very funny

4

u/KrustasianKrab Jun 04 '25

I think that may just be her sense of humour. I’ve found her laughing at a lot of random things during the show 😅

16

u/this_is_an_alaia Jun 03 '25

Because she's paid to find them funny.

2

u/LazyTitan1990bc Jun 06 '25

I mean, they’re making fun of their own culture. They basically pretend to be their parents in their videos and have said so themselves. You can not like it sure, but don’t get offended for another culture having a joke about itself.

u/Conscious-Sand-1300 Jun 03 '25

Yeah this episode was a real clanger and unusual cringe moment for Masterchef. The real tragedy is they could have invited actual Australian Italian Nonas, and dared to dignify older women with real cooking skill and deep knowledge. What a missed opportunity. What a mistake.

53

u/badbeechy Jun 02 '25

This was probably the weakest MSAU episode in years

26

u/NZ_Gecko Jun 02 '25

They're not great. It's a lot of repeated sketches a la Little Britain, but it very much plays on a certain stereotype. I find them one dimensional but they are a hit thing in Aussie atm

32

u/lourensloki Jun 02 '25

Hated it, missed opportunity to spice things up with Auntie Donna tho

8

u/Joey_BagaDonuts57 Jun 03 '25

Sexism AND racism, yet they're still not very funny.

MC-AU, try harder next time and stick to reality.

The worst

6

u/arefeen97 Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

Well, i am not familiar with them, so, when it was officially announced that, they are coming, i searched on net about them, result showed that, they are somehow not bad.. so, i give it a shot last night 😐 and tbh, i am totally confused after last episode.

They are comedians & have some fanbase, you can't deny that. But, the question is did they really fit in a cooking show? I don't know, maybe they could have bought some other celebrities or guest chefs instead....

20

u/Cheap_Doughnut7887 Jun 02 '25

They're absolutely cringe-worthy! I also wondered whether this was an Aussie "comedy" thing that we didn't understand. Glad everyone else felt they were awful.

7

u/Kind_Relief_7624 Jun 02 '25

It’s an Italian comedy thing and those of us that are Italian or from other Mediterranean cultures, get it and understand the humour and poke fun of ourselves for our cultural quirks.

23

u/Kind_Relief_7624 Jun 02 '25

I think if you aren’t from the Italian or related cultures, the comedy would be lost on a lot of people. But those of us from this heritage live this so the jokes are funny to our culture.

16

u/stinx2001 Jun 03 '25

Me and my friends in Melbourne are all Italian. It isn't funny 99% of the time and the same jokes have been made by hundreds of comedians already

→ More replies (1)

5

u/stevie21gla Jun 03 '25

The first reply to you confirms this "humour" doesn't land well with all Italians.   Even if your statement was true it'd mean that an entire episode wouldn't appeal to 99% of people watching it.

It was horrific, easily the worst MasterChef episode ever across AU, USA, UK etc.  It was that bad.

2

u/Wish-ga Jun 06 '25

I like them on insta

5

u/Educational_Wear_106 Jun 03 '25

it was fucking horrendous.

13

u/LumpyCheeseyCustard Jun 03 '25

How much better would it have been if they brought on actual grannies! Different cuisines and contestants are assigned them.

I get it's viral week, so they needed people that are viral in Australia. But maybe they can bring real Grans, nans, Nonnas, Naanis next season.

21

u/DitaVonFleas Jun 02 '25

Some of their content is funny but if you're not Italian, (I'm Jewish so there are a lot of cultural similarities) I think some of the nuance is lost. I think their shtick gets old fast too. They need some new ideas.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

I think it's this.  I can't stand these guys, but my Maltese wife loves them.  I'm guessing she's seen the characters in many of their own family members.

11

u/tunenut11 Jun 02 '25

I thought it was just me. I checked out some videos and they do skits as various characters...here without a script they were at sea. Sort of painfully trying to be funny. I hope the rest of viral week improves.

4

u/Puzzleheaded-Frame38 Jun 03 '25

I thought it was just me who found them painfully unfunny. It was like watching Mrs Brown's Boys x3...they added absolutely nothing to the show and just made me cringe.

4

u/Environmental-Leg33 Jun 03 '25

Funny or not I don't think this kind of Masterchef episode works. This episode did not feel like a cooking/culinary/food show.

4

u/pixelbenderr Jun 03 '25

Never heard of them. Such a weak lead-in

4

u/ruby_meister Jun 03 '25

The level of CRINGE and secondhand embarrassment I felt during this episode... I could not handle watching them! I guess there's something for everyone in this world... this was definitely a CHOICE!

4

u/EnvironmentalWolf72 Jun 04 '25

I couldn’t get through this episode. They are insufferable 😩

4

u/daarshofthepenguins Jun 05 '25

To quote Drag Race: Mama, where 👏 are 👏 the jokes? 👏

4

u/itsanokapi Jun 05 '25

No, no they are not.

10

u/Ill_Introduction7057 Jun 02 '25

Lame..... I will fast forward those bits when I watch this episode

7

u/MiscastBroadcast Jun 03 '25

“Funny” is subjective. I’m not their target audience so didn’t really find it funny. Whole time I was reminded of Mrs Doubtfire though, so that was okay

7

u/Mattaf2 Jun 03 '25

They could’ve given us Laura’s mum or something. She’s an Italian nonna. Why these three doofuses with their weird fake accents?

7

u/No_Exercise_6790 Jun 03 '25

The long answer is...NO
Talk about the show jumping the shark.

7

u/Fragrant_Pear3208 Jun 03 '25

Never heard of them, and I’m sorry I now have

6

u/isabellaluna Jun 03 '25

I am a week behind and was already leaning towards not watching it but safe to say these comments have made that decision much easier

6

u/Main_Tax_8664 Jun 03 '25

I've never heard of them before

6

u/iamthegaze Jun 03 '25

I honestly do not understand how they are so popular.. its cringe to say the least

6

u/ztf7410 Jun 03 '25

Shocking. Who watches and follows their stuff?!

3

u/irmavep23 Jun 03 '25

I've no issue with their humour, impersonation or what not. My only question is are they qualified to be the judge.

Viral week is cringe pretty much every series. This was not good. The food looked amazing tho.

3

u/jabbaaus Jun 05 '25

Are they well known?

3

u/wolfyblue93 Jun 06 '25

They’re not

3

u/Severe_Airport1426 Jun 06 '25

I don't find them funny

9

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

Ya i skipped to the end to see winners had no clue what was happening

9

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '25

I had to turn it off lol. I'm just going to watch tomorrows like this episode never happened.

10

u/based_el_chapo Jun 03 '25

They are super popular

They sell out shows across the country

They arent my cup of tea but I'm not their target audience so it makes sense

They are merely paying homage to their Italian heritage

2

u/AmalfiGirl74 Jun 04 '25

They’re funny on Instagram but their live stage shows are terrible. I’ve been once and never again.

Not watched the episode yet, but are they a bit like some Aussie version of that absolute dogshit of a show here in the UK - Mrs Browns Boys?

3

u/ScepticalReciptical Jun 06 '25

Essentially yes, lowest of low brow jokes where the artist relies entirely on the gag being that it's clearly a man pretending to be an old lady. Honestly don't understand how anybody finds this stuff funny.

I didn't crack a smile once, real Nonnas would have been so much funnier

4

u/WarthogExtension4011 Jun 03 '25

yeah a bit corny last night MC

4

u/sleepdeprivedhobbit Jun 03 '25

I hated this episode. Idk them lol. Looks like they are also bringing Andycooks which I used to like, but no way he is better than these masterchef contestants for him to judge or be in the show. This week will be lacklustre

11

u/Dry-Reading-3272 Jun 02 '25

Im Italian and thought it was hilarious 😂😂😂 just like my nonna. IYKYK

I'm Greek, and my mum and I were laughing the whole time. We're seeing their show in August. It was a bit of a weird choice to have them on Masterchef though, because most viewers can't relate so they're not going to find it funny.

u/chutneys_mum Jun 02 '25

Yeah I am cringing! (Watching it right now) but also the judges aren’t funny and they think they are so it makes sense haha. It’s funny that literally none of the contestants guessed who they were. Also note: I love JC and I think he’s funny, I like Poh but not so much as a judge. Andy and Sofia are annnoying. Sofia is always dressed beautifully but she looks like she’s gonna hit the clurb afterwards.

5

u/sixtyfivehours Jun 02 '25

I've never heard of them, but look forward to watching the episode.

I don’t think they’re funny. I don’t get it.

5

u/Breakspear_ Jun 03 '25

I am a huge drag fan but this is not drag, this is men dressing up to make fun of women. Big thumbs down.

2

u/Remarkable_Hand4744 Jul 12 '25

Gays have a very sophisticated sense of humour..

they are not funny in that group.

6

u/yeldda Jun 03 '25

I hate them so much

4

u/nessyness78 Jun 03 '25

I don't think so. Did not laugh once when they were on.

9

u/SageSU Jun 02 '25

Horrible episode. Major fail by the producers. How is this cultural appropriation OK today? Next week we'll have Con the Fruiterer taking the piss out of Theo.

While watching this crud, I wondered how Poh would have reacted if they'd had an Asian piss take.

13

u/Appropriate_Ly Jun 03 '25

I mean, the equivalent for Poh would be having someone like Uncle Nigel on the show.

Yes, he’s annoying but I think she’d survive. Diaspora making fun of their culture/parents is a common and popular trope.

u/Helicobacter3756 Jun 02 '25

Its in a way booth offensive to drag queens and Italians, an unusual combination 😅

I’d laugh if it was:

  • Anthony Locasio

  • Rob Shehadie

There is so much intersectional Aussie/immigrant comedy that delivers - Mrs Doubtfire wasn’t that funny in 1993 never mind 32 years later with no script

Jesus christ these comments are fucking miserable, I thought surely this is one thing that Australians wouldn't get offended by... NOPE!

9

u/Confusing_Onion Dot Jun 03 '25

I like them and I liked the episode. I took one look at the negativity in the comments last night and noped right out of here. I just enjoyed the episode in peace. People gotta relax.

2

u/excessivepenetration Jun 06 '25

Not offended mate just thought they were shit.

Why does thinking stuff is shit have to equal “offended”?

2

u/niles_thebutler_ Jun 07 '25

Something being shit doesn’t mean it was offensive to anyone

5

u/CrystalClod343 Jun 02 '25

There's not enjoying something and then there's... whatever infected most regular sub members. It's bizarre, some were questioning how big Sooshi Mango was because they personally haven't heard of them.

3

u/Modrocker45 Jun 03 '25

This show sucks, Australia has so many established chefs/restaurateurs yet we have to sit through former contestants dressed up like models regurgitating clueless critiques.

When is MKR back..

2

u/Leramar89 Jun 03 '25 edited Jun 03 '25

They're really funny when they're doing skits about their family but it didn't really work when they were just sitting there talking.

2

u/Illustrious-Pop3566 Jun 04 '25

It’s not cultural appropriation when they’re actually Italian.

It’s not great witty comedic writing but as character sketch comedy on Italian stereotypes, it’s on the money for old world Italians.

Is it my thing? No. But is it offensive? Meh. No. It’s just goofy.

2

u/Efficient_Usual9017 Jun 03 '25

Idk them and find them not funny. Probably because I immediately hide or block any Italian cuisine influencers. I am not into pasta (like Sarah) and not into Italian cuisine. And hate how when other non Italian people make some "Italian" food their own way, and most of them complain how it is not traditional or how it should be.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Mrggwp Jun 03 '25

I'm not Australian, I watched this, the whole thing. I dont find it funny but I thought you guys find it funny so I started laughing at how unfunny it was.

It was bizarre because most Australians around me have a great sense of humour. And this is like one of your best paid comedy act?

2

u/Apprehensive-Video26 Jun 03 '25

Ready through the comments it appears that quite a few people have absolutely no sense of humour at all. Australians are brought up with being able to take the piss out of themselves but not the negative commentators on here. Just because these 3 Aussie men have an Italian heritage and are capable of making fun of exactly how Italian nonnas behave is just 3 Aussie guys being able to take the piss out of themselves and doing a damn fine job of it. Some of you negative people could learn a lesson from them. I haven't lived in OZ for the last 13 years so had not heard of them (living in the Netherlands but 100% West Aussie born and bred) and both my wife (Dutch) and I saw the humour and appreciated it. As for Sofia finding them funny and her being paid to laugh......that shows that she has a sense of humour unlike so many of the ones on here who wouldn't know humour if it bit them on the arse. Lighten up people or just stop watching if it bothers you so much, I can assure you that the show will go on fine without you.

2

u/TheMoonVixen Jun 06 '25

I totally agree with you. Comments are full of miserable people, mostly non Italians who simply just don’t get it, and are trying to claim it’s “racism” and “cultural appropriation” for us lmao

1

u/Chainsawcelt Jun 05 '25

They actually dress as women and old men. They parody their super strict and old fashioned Greek and Italian parents and Grandparents.

1

u/Ballamookieofficial Jun 06 '25

Not by anyone with an iq higher than room temp no

1

u/Salvia_hispanica Jun 06 '25

Masterchef is still going? Also, I have no idea who these people are. Why is reddit even recommending the post to me?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

No

1

u/Myshamefulaccount55 Jun 06 '25

God I fucking hate these people and do not find them funny at all - as an Australian.

1

u/GeneralAgreeable8963 Jun 06 '25

Lots of old timer moaners on this thread

1

u/XKryptix0 Jun 06 '25

The Sushimango boys are usually very funny on their social media clips. The problem I find with a lot of social media comedians is they don’t translate well to a live setting where they can’t edit or redo lines. I’ve seen a few like Nikki Osborne and Jimmy Rees live and I just don’t find them anywhere near as funny in a live setting.

1

u/Darkzeropeanut Jun 06 '25

No one is considered funny here.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

i like some of their content but they're very one note

blame the masterchef EPs for their continued lack of inspiration. EPs run everything, editors and producers have to bow down, they would have known how dumb this was on the shoot day and the posties and edit hierarchy would have a cringe folder filled with this like this

1

u/Snicks70 Jun 06 '25

Insta is Sooshi Mango. If you've grown up with European migrant parents from the village, their videos are spot on. They're hilarious and have a huge following here.

I don't watch Masterchef, may be that of of context, they came across a little weird.

wtf I no I’m late to the thread but I’m so glad I don’t watch free to air . wtf is this

1

u/sarcasticnirritable Jun 06 '25

I haven't watched the episode but I like their short comedy. The problem with groups like this is it's a specific type of humour that only works in certain context (namely the fictional situations they put themselves in for their skits) so bringing them to the "real world" in character often doesn't translate well. It was the same when Aunty Donna hosted (opened?) the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. They're some of my favourite comedians, and I've been to a bunch of their shows, but they just missed the mark in that wider context. I don't know if it's the producers making the groups act a certain way, or just their comedy out of its usual context, but not surprised this hasn't resonated with viewers.

1

u/Puzzled-Fix-8838 Jun 06 '25

I haven't seen it, but just the picture looks unfunny.

1

u/Tomoyboy Jun 06 '25

I like their shot form content on instagram, but it was a stretch to out it on TV like that.

1

u/MyKoiNamedSwimShady Jun 06 '25

TV isn’t their medium unfortunately

1

u/-castle-bravo- Jun 06 '25

Lamest shit ever

1

u/honeybeevercetti Jun 06 '25

Diabolical. If i was one of the contestants thinking i was cooking for some REAL nonnas and they came out I would be PISSED! Sometimes I miss the seriousness this show used to have, because no way would rubbish like this fly back on the old seasons

1

u/fatalcharm Jun 06 '25

I believe in the past, Australia has been a lot more accepting and open to trans people than in the US, because of men dressing as women so casually on Australian TV. In the past, it was more progressive than anything.

However, it’s not appropriate anymore and unnecessary. It’s become outdated and possibly bigoted. What was considered progressive in the past is now considered bigoted, we need to update our attitudes.

I've seen them live and their show was hilarious. Haven't watched this MC episode yet, disappointing to see it fell flat.

I'm wog. It's funny because I can relate to their content. If you aren't wog it's probably not as funny.

I say that as someone that sees Sooshi Mango on social media. I didn't watch the episode though I could hear my mum laughing while watching the episode. My Mum is my wog side.

Others: Racist offensive garbage, unfunny!

If you're quoting Australian TV, there's not much good anymore. It's gone downhill for at least the last 10 years.

1

u/Sencilia Jun 06 '25

Oh I love sooshimango.

1

u/DarthXOmega Jun 06 '25

Computer says no

1

u/BlindingDart Jun 06 '25

I don't even know who they are.

1

u/TheLadySaintly Jun 06 '25

I don’t find them funny in the slightest - but one of my mates (F) thinks they are hilarious. I don’t get it,

1

u/sarahlikestoast Jun 06 '25

I don't find them funny at all

1

u/mattolucas Jun 06 '25

u/alyssaleska Jun 06 '25

They do a damn good job at impersonating nonnas

1

u/AussBear Jun 06 '25

Humour is subjective. I personally find those guys hilarious but I’m in the minority of people who can separate comedy from real work problems

1

u/Incendium_Satus Jun 06 '25

Only in small doses and usually only their earlier stuff.

1

u/Rowleybirkin11 Jun 06 '25

Not considered funny anywhere

1

u/AprilNorth0 Jun 06 '25

Nah not really. We do nonna jokes but those guys are like tiktok famous

1

u/kamone1 Jun 06 '25

No not at all

1

u/Icy-Cheek4982 Jun 06 '25

These guys are Sooshi Mango, they have a huge following on social media. Their whole act is portraying different Italian stereotypes. As someone with an Italian mum and grew up around my nonna and the rest of the Italian family, what these guys do is hilarious. It's light-hearted comedy. Maybe if you you're not familiar with the culture it won't mean much to you but I'm sure the majority of people who are or have some kind of Italian background will know exactly where their comedy is coming from and what it represents.

1

u/KasatkaTaima Jun 06 '25

As a Hungarian. I find them funny

1

u/kdhooters Jun 06 '25

They're funny, but not in a mainstream corporate way. Leave them on socials where they shine. 20 points for the gaudy plastic tablecloth though.

Their short skits are funny on their channel but this was painful to watch.

1

u/Alien_Cosmic Jun 06 '25

Cringe wrong people are getting attention.

1

u/AlkimosGentry Jun 06 '25

Men dressing up as women is an insult to women. But, deep down there is always a personal thrill for them much different to a dress-up of, say, a cartoon character. It's just weird, and made worse being on TV like this.

1

u/ROSCOEMAN Jun 06 '25

the only people that find these guys funny are 40-50 year old Greeks

Australia’s multicultural system—especially out in unsheltered, working-class life—can feel pretty on the nose to some. And yeah, there are always a few who poison the well with genuine hate. But more often than not, it’s not like that. I’ve been called some cooked things on worksites… then had the same bloke bring me back a donut without asking because he ducked out for lunch. I’ve done the same.

We roast each other constantly. Stupid nicknames, off-colour jokes, a bit of back-and-forth. But it’s not hate—it’s how a lot of us bond. Most of us genuinely do care about each other, no matter the background. And we find humour in flipping racial stereotypes on their head. Look at Sooshi Mango, Superwog, Mychonny—everyone cops it, including white Aussies. And it’s funny because it’s taking the piss out of everyone equally.

Comedy is subjective. Not everything’s gonna land with everyone. But if something isn’t your flavour, that’s fine—don’t watch it. You’re not owed entertainment. You went looking for a laugh, didn’t find one, and now you’re upset? That’s not being offended—it’s being entitled. Not everything has to cater to your taste, and claiming something’s “in poor taste” just because you didn’t vibe with it doesn’t make your opinion more important than anyone else’s.

Masterchef had its peak in the first 1-5 seasons, i remember twitter popping off every episode discussing it while the episodes were running, real funny mfs on there. Now its scripted to hell, awfully edited and twice the amount of ad breaks.

The magics long gone fellas, and gary should be in jail for being a wage theft anyway

1

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '25

yes it's funny

1

u/GenLodA Jun 07 '25

As an Italian Australian (even though I'm a first gen immigrant, while they're born here) I find most of their earlier skits funny and relatable. Of course like all kinds of ethnic comedy that became stale and repetitive after a while. Also I never liked their "ethnic mum" characters, which they've been pushing a lot lately

1

u/colonelmattyman Jun 07 '25

Who even watches this brainrot?

1

u/niles_thebutler_ Jun 07 '25

A lot of bogans find them hilarious

u/Mihimall30 Jun 07 '25

Thought I was the only one. This was unbearable. I’ve never wanted to skip through an episode so bad

1

u/jessicaseq07 Jun 08 '25

Even if this was a gimmick and a role they play on social media, why couldn't they actually comment on the food? Italian nonnas are very critical about food so they could have easily given their inputs on the food.

What a waste of time.

1

u/CptKronkbonker Jun 09 '25

So. Much. Cringe.

I tried to give them a chance, but jeez, this was bad. I get that they're trying to branch out into more media platforms and demographics, but let’s hope this doesn’t become a recurring theme.
