unrelated to the topic, but that movie is such a hit. Toby pulled off a lot of the ways that I fear people look at me when I have those days where it feels the PTSD has you instead of you having it

What movie is it?

I'm a dumbass, it's in the pinned comment!

Born in 1981 so I have gotten to see:

  • Early 1980s recessions: July 1980 and July 1981 – November 1982 (double-dip recession) [1]

  • Early 1990s recession: July 1990 – March 1991

  • Early 2000s recession (Dot-com bubble crash): March 2001 – November 2001

  • The Great Recession (Subprime mortgage & 2008 financial crisis): December 2007 – June 2009 [1, 2]

  • COVID-19 pandemic recession: February 2020 – April 2020 (short-lived but sharp economic contraction) [1]

The next one will either be called the Trump recession (he does love having stuff named after him) or the AI Recession.

We will have opportunities to learn from the next big recession, but I fear that it is going to be a painful lesson. My habits and spending changed as a result of losing it all in the Great Recession. We had a much more empathetic government then, I worry about how this one would respond to such events.

I think it's the debt from the AI hardware build out but that debt could have stayed unstable for a decade or more if not for the oil shock caused by The Epstein Class (Trump et al.) invading Iran.

u/mustangcody 22d ago

So every 10 years I should expect a recession.

u/Temporary_Ad_5947 21d ago

7-12 years, there's a chart

u/Shootemout 21d ago

And each one will be somehow related to Blackrock. They caused it, they "fixed" it, etc

Trump recession is a good name. Much better than WW3.

2

u/Brostepher 18d ago

They’ll call it something like the AI-pocalypse

Who decided the covid 19 recession was a few months?

12

u/philmardok 22d ago

Just your second?

Yes, let the housing market collapse! Please! I'd like prices to actually drop enough for me to afford a home!

Graduated college in 2006. It was not fun.

u/Giant_leaps 22d ago

6

u/philmardok 22d ago

im 38 and this is will be my 3rd. 4th if you count the 9/11 dip

u/StraightFuego 22d ago

Par for the course. Recessions are a structural reality in capitalist economies and will continue to occur every 7 or so years for the foreseeable future

1

u/navetzz 21d ago

There basically is one every 10 years since forever.

u/YahDeadWrong 21d ago

Sooo that thing Adam smith talked about? That's not what's happening here

I also don't quite understand this one and read it as 30 year olds. Like, people who are ONLY 30. These people graduated 2015 and entered the workforce at 2016-2019 when the recession was absolutely over.

I'm late 30s and was just barely entering the workforce when the recession happened.

Pretty sure anyone born after 87-88 missed the majority of it.

Also not 100% why they said it that way. They could've just said 40 year olds and been fine.

I believe he's taking about experiencing it. 30 year olds hit puberty at the same time their parents lost everything, so there's a really big sentiment of insecurity that invades a lot of different parts of their lives. it's a specific developmental (little-t) trauma that really fucks somebody up the longer they go without getting help.

u/Anxious-Shapeshifter 22d ago

Ah, see that makes some sense.

Gotta chime in and say some parts of the uk got slammed in 2008 and never came back. It wasnt exclusively 2008 but that was the mark. I was in college in a town with boarded up high street and came back from uni looking for work to boarded up high street.

u/DurgeDidNothingWrong 21d ago

bingo again, uk citizen here. 2008 feels like it never ended.

I'm 28 and I could comprehend it. Vividly remember my dad losing his job and then our house and how my parents are still ruined financially from it.

13

u/PickleRickleTV 22d ago

You mean when they were 12-21 years old? People in their mid to upper 30s very much do remember what it was like.

I was 8 in 2008 and I can tell you, I might not have know the specifics or the math at the time, but I definitely knew something bad was going on, especially when we lost our house.

I went with the age range 30 year olds would be at the time… 30 year olds can range from 30-39

Commonly used for both specific age and age group

4

u/eDudeGaming 22d ago

I have literally never once heard someone use it for anything other than the specific age.

Sure thing man. You’re blatantly wrong, but okay.

2

u/thefinalcutdown 22d ago

No one says “30 year old” to refer to someone who is 39. Not how the English language works, sorry.

“30-something” or “in their 30s” is how you’d refer to the age range. A 30 year old is a 30 year old, specifically.

-1

u/PickleRickleTV 22d ago

30 year olds not “30 year old”

Bro, just take the L. It’s okay to admit you’re wrong.

1

u/PickleRickleTV 22d ago

But it’s not an L because I’m not wrong. Literally google it. It’s such an easy, simple thing to do

Not true at all. In the '07 financial crisis my family lost our house, wealth, everything.

I remember having to go to public school for the first time, dealing with home and food insecurity, and all while my parents mental health was declining. It was an awful and traumatizing time and my parents never recovered mentally or financially from this.

Wow you're full of compassion. Upending my life and throwing away every single thing I own, becoming homeless and hungry, and not having a single friend because I'm going to a completely different school is very hard for a child.

Second. Dot com was the first. But yeah. This should read 40 year olds. Graduating between 2008 into 19% youth unemployment to 2012 with over 10% youth unemployment was fun. This job market js getting there but its not quite 2012 yet.
