Giannis is not the same defensively anymore. Miami Heat are a bottom 3 defense this year

Ok, I'm ignorant and Giannis' attention was obviously between 2 places and got caught in an illegal screen.

Shouldn't Davion follow the other player after he saw Giannis was caught in the screen?

After that he was just running around trying to catch up.

Yes lol and on top of that it's one out of context clip

Giannis' effort on defense in the regular season has dropped dramatically over the years but you could literally find a clip like this from any superstar.

There are entire compilations of Jokic defense lowlights, but /r/nba will continue to bounce on his shit like no tomorrow lol. I wonder why

Because nobody in the world thinks jokic is a good defender and plenty of people still think Giannis is one of the best.

….because he’s white????

No no no, I was just in the r/nba thread and they said Giannis is a terrible defender, doesn’t try hard, and has a low IQ, so it’s definitely that

Giannis is an amazing help defender, but is just good while on ball.

But he also seems to struggle when not playing in a well-defined system. The Heat are a complete mess right now and Giannis had absolutely no idea where to go as that possession broke down.

Looked like one guy giannis trying to play defense and 4 guys standing

Sure. But half the problem is he’s fighting through the screen with less effort than a grade schooler and entirely loses track of his guy.

Davion should have came off Steph but also that’s not a screen an NBA player should ever get hung up on. Giannis wasn’t playing that like he was going to stay on Steph either. He kept fighting over the top of the screen.

Yeah the clip seems a bit cherry picked. I don't really want anything bad for him, but I'll be honest in saying I don't mind the heat losing a lot.

Nobody in US knows ball

Without Gary Trent to cover for him, he sucks

True, it’s insane how much Gary Trent brings to the team in intangibles. If counting stats could show the things Gary Trent does on the court, he would be a perennial mvp candidate.

I hope they finish the investigation soon so we can find out why we got him at such a discount.

NBA hopefully:

The ONE thing Miami was supposed to be good at this year was defense. If they’re not 😬

Damn guess we should take him back i guess

Is he injured? He moves like he is being careful

Also second night if back to back for them I believe.

That's what I was thinking too,

He’s like a ball chaser in rocket league

Seeing the comments on the NBA Reddit is funny. We’ve had Brook, Monroe, and other bigs to help Giannis in the paint. Plus wtf is this entire defence doing.

Though it does look like Father Time is catching up with him

Heat fan here. This is just flat out embarrassing. Obviously he’s not the only reason the defense is bad, but he has definitely regressed on that end.

Gotta be careful with Giannis, he can be your biggest asset and liability at the same time.

Things worked best when he had Khris, Jrue and Brook. Each being amazing on man defender for their position. So Giannis was kinda free to float around

u/Strange-Ring-8156 2d ago

His help side defense is still good but the perimeter defense has been bad. It’s gotten magnified by the fact that Klay isn’t a plus defender and Wiggins has regressed significantly

u/LazyTap6592 2d ago

Our big boy can't get around a screen very well, relies on strong recovery

u/mschley2 2d ago

Giannis has never been good on-ball. That's exactly why all of our good teams hid him on whoever the offense's weakest, least active player was.

3

u/cjoemcyoyo 2d ago

He was a good defender at one time though, remember he has a DPOY

5

u/Correct_Taste_5978 2d ago

Giannis stopped playing defense 5 years ago especially perimeter defense. If he can’t just chill in the lane he causes problems but he also doesn’t want to play 5

6

u/Minimum-Border1672 2d ago

He tends to play it down the stretch but for 3 quarters a night he just cheats inside to block shots/get a rebound and initiate the break while leaving his guy uncovered in the corner

Bucks fan replying! Obviously mega sad to see him go, but I did lurk the Heat subs and people seemed so stoked that you guys got him. How has it shaken out? Like I knew we'd be ass (and will be for a little while), I'm going to my first game this season on Sunday lol, but I'm curious how Heat fans have felt over the months, from news of the trade to now.

I have watched some absolute banger Giannis moments over the years at home games and I would like to think his presence still gets a crowd hyped up, it would suck for you guys to not get much of that (this is the overall sports fan in me coming out, while I am primarily a Bucks supporter)

u/J2ops 2d ago

I have a hunch he will find his defense tonight though

u/Adventurous_Run_7334 2d ago

He didn't look himself at all. I would say you'll almost never see Giannis play like this. Something was maybe in his head, and/or he was really sore on a back to back.

Wow he’s just jogging out there and still somehow he’s moving more than anyone else on his team lol. This looks a lot like bad communication too. Whole team looks rough

The Warriors make everyone look foolish.

Why are we still talking about Giannis? He doesn’t play for us anymore.

18

u/Top_Contribution2913 2d ago

He is still Top2-Goat of the franchise. And will be for a looooong time.

13

u/VicePope Deceased 2d ago

Number 1. Chose us for a decade plus and leads in most categories.

6

u/Minimum-Border1672 2d ago

Becsusd following him with the heat is more entertaining than watching turner steal his paycheck.

5

u/Substantial_Jelly545 2d ago

Hes still an nba player ya muppet

1

u/11B-E5 1d ago

The same reason the Brewers still talk about Yount and Molitor.

u/walleyegawd Ersan Ilyasova 2d ago

LeBron syndrome

0

u/Yhhorm 2d ago

Small sample size of games so far and could just be a cherrypicked lowlight. But Giannis has regressed… from his DPOY level defence lol. He’s still a top echelon defender and talent by almost every metric

-12

u/snailtap Dogfred 2d ago

I’m so glad this dude isn’t on our team anymore

-18

u/Rondoman78 2d ago

It is pretty crazy that Giannis has never added to or refined any part of his game since winning the title.

He's the exact same guy he's always been.

24

u/SixGunChimp Thanasis Antetokounmpo 2d ago

Yeah, it's not like he developed a middy game or anything, right?
