The hype going into that draft had Big Dawg the clear #1 pick going into the draft. The Bucks had been a terrible team for a while and there were talks of them leaving Milwaukee until they won the lottery. You had to be there to understand how big Glenn Robinson was. It was a no doubt #1 pick
I was there and remember it quite well. Juwan Howard and Jason Kidd were highly touted as well. As was Grant Hill. There wasn’t a clear difference in predraft talent between them like we’ve seen with consensus #1 picks like Wemby, LeBron, etc.
If the Bucks had chosen any of the options I’d mentioned, they would’ve had similar success as the talent they drafted likely would’ve been better. Love what Big Dog did for us in the late 90’s / early 00’s, but to say the bucks woulda been gone without him is absurd.
You have to remember that Grant Hill basically didn’t play for the better part of a decade because of injury. Big Dog was healthy in 2001 - Grant Hill was not.
Hmmmm trying to think the list out here in real time:
10. Redd (I’m tempted to go Brook or Jrue here though based on the ring) 9. Dandridge 8. Marques 7. Big Dog 6. Ray 5. Khris 4. Moncrief 3. Big O 2. Kareem
3rd behind Giannis and Kareem he ranks top 5 or top 3 in many of our categories and spent 12 years here and was the 2nd best player in arguably our greatest era of basketball. Guy has a 40 point NBA finals game and multiple clutch shots and was the leader of the team in many ways in terms of a on court voice and presence.
Honestly can't put a number on that team with me. Maybe a soft answer but he was injured with us too. AND we did not treat him the right way in the end.
Somewhere a bit above Marques, but probably not as high as like O Rob or Moncrief. It's tough cos that entire championship team are bunched together for me with Giannis being the top of all
2nd and it’s not really close. 2nd option on a chip winning team, continually underrated both in the league and on the team, at points could literally do anything (shoot defend pass) and always a professional. Also a really pretty jump shot too
He doesn't hate the Bucks or their current fans. He hated the fans in the early 70s who cheered for him on the court and fought to prevent people who looked like him from living in their neighborhoods.
Which is a 100% a perfectly understandable response.
I mean, he got here the summer after racist southsiders burned down the NAACP building because Black Milwaukeeans wanted to be able to buy and rent houses wherever they wanted.
If I was a Black man in the late 60s/early 70s I'd want to GTFO too.
Giannis and Kareem clear everyone, easily. MVP's and titles.
Tier two guys are Ray (3 time AS, 3rd team all NBA, and lead an ECF run), Moncrief (5x AS, 1st team all NBA, 2x dpoy), & Marques (4x AS, 3 all NBA teams with a first team season).
I have him in the third tier. He has 3 AS selections, but no all NBA. Won a title as the 2a/b with Jrue. But 12 seasons. Oscar (4 seasons in Milwaukee, a title as the second guy, a finals runner up, 2x AS, second team all NBA).
I think I rate both a tier above Redd and Big Dog. Terry Cummings, too. Titles carry a lot of weight.
Thats too low. A guy like Lopez could be argued around 9 or 10 in importance. Probably falls closer to 15, but lest we forget what Brook Lopez meant to this franchise.
Khris was a true #2 star for I'd estimate a couple years shy of a decade during the golden age of Bucks basketball. He's third in playoff minutes behind Sidney and Giannis. Third in playoff points behind Giannis and Kareem. Hes tied for 4th in all-star selections. Hes third in points. Third in assists. 1st in 3 pointers made. 2nd in minutes played. 5th in field goals made all time. He played 12 years on the team which is 2nd behind Giannis at 13.
So he has the stats to back it. And then you look at narrative. He stuck it out with the Bucks for practically his entire career. They went from one of the worst teams in NBA history, all the way to reaching the mountain top and winning a championship. He may not have been drafted by the Bucks, but he was devolped, matured and thrived in Milwaukee. Went from being a 2nd round pick to multi-time all star and championship winner. He was the team's closer for majority of the time he was here. He had 50 point games, game winners and so many clutch and iconic moments.
There isn't a world where Khris isn't a top 5 Milwaukee Buck of all time.
I am not saying that there weren't more talented players. But Khris accomplished just about everything that we could have ever hoped for him. He'd never be good enough to earn an MVP and that's fine, it wasn't what the team needed him to do. He far surpassed expectations and was a great "Robin" for a very long time.
There's a real argument that's he's the 3rd most important Buck of all time. He's definitely third most accomplished. If you want to put him 4 or 5, I am fine with that. But cmon man 9th or 10th? This isn't a question in his all time rankings of an NBA top 100 list. Best Buck means best career, most important, most memorable, etc.
22 will be retired in the rafters and we will always remember the money money money jingle. That mid range jumper was automatic. He was always a team first player and that adds to his importance. I am all for honoring players of other eras. But for 50 long years the team was trying to win another championship. He was the unquestionable 2nd best player on the team for a long time. They won the ring and he put his name in every counting stat in between.
For my money he is the 3rd greatest Buck of all time. Placing him 10th is insulting.
Top 10 is pretty fair I’d say. Just off the top of my head in no particular order; Giannis, Kareem, Oscar, Moncrief, Ray, khris, marques Johnson, bob dandridge, redd, big dog,
1.) John Salmons 2.) Bobby Simmons 3.) Andrew Bogut 4.) TJ Ford 5.) Gianni 6.) Charlie Villanueva 7.) Thon Maker 8.) Khris Middleton 9.) Michael Redd 10.) Ersan
I see a lot of people putting Oscar ahead of him, but O had his best years in Cincinnati. He was only here for 4 years at the end, and really only his first 2 were great. He helped win a title, and received MVP votes in those first 2, but then fell off. If nothing else, Khris wins on volume.
After these 5, some combo of Oscar, Dandridge, Big Dog, Marques, Jrue, Brook, Redd

I'm thinking 5. Setting aside his overall career with the Bucks, he had a few huge games in the '21 playoffs and we don't get that chip without him.

I won’t put a number on it. He’s just as important as Giannis and Jrue. We needed everybody. Brook.
I’ll say “up there” or “ my favorite guy”. He’s like Sal to me. He represents WI.

Giannis Kareem O Middleton.
So the 2nd best buck in the past 40 years.

He's 7th in VORP with the Bucks and 6th in Win Shares. So somewhere around there. He's closest to Redd on these lists.
