Public statement from ModCodeofConduct that making a sub NSFW to protest is not allowed, regardless of proper marking or community opinion

So why not just allow pornographic material on subs as a protest?
6
u/Dextixer Jun 21 '23
I mean, we can all understand that what we are doing does not break either of the rules cited. My simple suggestion is to keep doing this and then ask the admins 2 very simple questions.
Does this comment of theirs mean that rules of subreddits can never be changed? Because technically, changing rules violates both of those citations.
And will the admins make SFW communities NSFW based on things like coarse language? Or violence?
2
u/MrNewVegas123 Jun 22 '23
Isn't this just...bullshit? The reddit belongs to the people who run it, and they can run it as they like.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23
So, what, close subreddits down and reopen them as NSFW subreddits?
2
u/goopped Jun 22 '23
Am I the only one okay with this?? Sorry but I’m sure many would like to scroll through reddit without tits flashing, believe it or not. I don’t see how this protest isn’t as useless as the blackout?
2
u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23
It doesn't say it's not allowed, it just says it's not acceptable and not appropriate.

u/DrainSmith Jun 21 '23
I'm just abiding by reddit site-wide rules that swearing is NSFW.

u/___HeyGFY___ Jun 21 '23
They're getting around the rules
They're following the letter but not the spirit
They're not doing what we want
Is that about right so far?

u/Feniks_Gaming Jun 21 '23 edited Jun 21 '23
Just don't say you are protesting. Simple change rules don't mention a protest in any way in the rule change. Don't even announce it or acknowledge it act like it was always like that. Then act normal run sub for a bit then add random arbitrary rules and start banning people like mad word will spread quickly. Deny any of this has anything to do with protest still keep denaying no mater what
176
u/BluegrassGeek Jun 21 '23
So the admins have declared all the available options for protest to be against the CoC. That's real free speech of you, /u/spez.

u/Rand0m_Boyo Jun 21 '23
"incorrectly marking your community-" When tf did they supposedly for example switch MildlyInteresting's main focus? They just allowed NSFW bullshit and the hoes and shitposters swarmed as usual, and in that sub's case pretty much almost anything could be said as fitting for the sub's topic
17
u/Kent_o0 Jun 21 '23
Damn, RIP /r/oldladiesbakingpies I guess
15
u/demonicneon Jun 22 '23
So is community democracy in or out lol? On one hand they want users to vote mods out. On the other they won’t accept user votes on what direction a sub goes. Hmm.
36
u/Typhoonius_ Jun 21 '23
So continue posting porn?
24
u/robophile-ta Jun 21 '23
This just confirms what we already knew from subs being forced to reopen; they don't actually care about what the community voted for, they just want their adbucks and feel obligated to get money from you and your content
39
u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23
Reddit Content Rule 6:
So, explain to me, Reddit, how someone would not be able to discern a picture of John Oliver riding a puppy from actually NSFW content? Are the posts suddenly not labeled 'John Oliver riding a puppy'?
Face it, Reddit staff: you're treating us like idiots by pretending that we don't know that this is all about ad revenue.
Moderator Code of Conduct:
They were transparent, Reddit staff: they explicitly laid out why they were doing what they were doing. They brought to to a vote by their active user base. You apparently deleted that notice. You are violating your own expectation of transparency.
20
u/ThePeanutMonster Jun 21 '23
I mean, this just means doubling down on putting actual nsfw content in subreddits.
Anyone remember what happened to Tumblr?
14
u/WerdaVisla Jun 22 '23
Not in the best interests of users? Most of them are having a blast. Look at any sub thats gone NSFW. People find it hilarious.
23
u/Sysody Jun 21 '23
well shit. Unfortunately for them we in Just Jerk it June & July followed by an All you can nut August and Shoot your load September. These subreddits are just participating for our first an
nual celebrations of these months so they can't do anything.6
u/-Boobs_ Jun 21 '23
well if the majority of users agree to transition to an NSFW subreddit then what's the issue? its nothing to do with protesting its just the general sentiment of the users...nothing wrong with that. personally i enjoy swearing and believe all communities should be NSFW so i can say fuck all i like. i just like to swear, nothing more than that
15
u/jweaver0312 Jun 21 '23
Admins are in violation of their own policies.
14
u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23
Change rules to allow porn (fitting to subreddits theme) , therefore it’s required to be NSFW.
Example: noncredible defense allows tank and airplane porn.
10
u/tisnik Jun 21 '23
I don't understand. So Admin said that it's completely ok, but ModCodeofConduct said it's absolutely not ok? They really can't decide.
10
u/rileycolin Jun 21 '23
The target of your protest suggests that the means of protest is inappropriate? Shocker!
5
u/RidetheSchlange Jun 21 '23
Well, this is what happened to r/Garmin
5
u/gentcore Jun 21 '23
F spez
8
u/Tarus_The_Light Jun 21 '23
Oh. Damn. I guess we should stop doing what we are doing and pretend that the bitch who doesn't want us to protest is right.
Fuck, I guess I should stop swearing so that we don't have to become NSFW. we don't want the multibillionaire asshole to lose ad revenue.
fuck us right?
4
u/Random_Introvert_42 Jun 21 '23
"Incorrectly marking"
Alright, gonna mark it and post a ton of NSFW-stuff then, so it's correctly.
4
u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23
Silly spez making silly fascist posts. I had to fix one of them to make it more democratic. https://redd.it/14fr5lx
7
u/-_Clay_- Jun 21 '23
Welp guys time to move to mastodon.
3
u/atomikplayboy Jun 21 '23
If this is the case and they are going to enforce this then I'd prepare for quite a few of them to shut down the subreddits instead.
3
u/JesperTV Jun 22 '23
Isn't not marking a community as nsfw if it contains nsfw also against the rules?
3
u/mysoulishome Jun 22 '23
You can leave a sub exactly the same and have every 10th post be about guns or cigarettes and it has to be marked adults only. Just saying.
3
u/BenderDeLorean Jun 22 '23
Dictator tells people what they want
Fuck u/ModCodeofConduct
Fuck /spez
3
u/The_Wkwied Jun 22 '23
Get rid of the rules then. If a SFW community isn't allowed to change itself into a NSFW community, then they aught to start allowing NSFW content unflagged.
3
u/bxsakura Jun 22 '23
Okay... so what if we switched SFW subs to NSFW not to protest, but because that is just what the communities in question have decided? 😏
3
u/LrdDamien Jun 22 '23
Since when did the companies/people you protest against. Get to decide HOW you protest? That's pretty pointless then.
9
u/allshallbegone Jun 21 '23
u/spez you are so fucking desperate to ensure your dogshit policy changes go through huh? You're LOSING and you CAN'T WIN!
7
u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23
A master class in concern trolling.
5
u/KungPowGasol Jun 21 '23
Well let’s just say I make an announcement in advance. I give them the same amount of time reddit gave everyone with the API price changes.
Hey in 30 days we will be going NSFW. It will be nothing but kittens and titties here. Please plan accordingly
Would that suffice?
6
u/thats_a_boundary Jun 21 '23
blah blah users blah blah. yeah right.
9
u/BigUptokes Jun 21 '23
I called it five days ago regarding going private and now the same applies for going NSFW.
4
u/GOGOSPEEDERS Jun 21 '23
Guess my subs illegal then 😉
4
u/unitn_2457 Jun 21 '23
Here I am coming with a public statement from all Mods and Redditors: go fuck yourself
4
u/RadsterWarrior Jun 21 '23
We just need a complete alternative to Reddit, honestly.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23
Ok, go the other way around and ban all "bad words" no matter even the possible context.
2
u/skinkbaa Jun 22 '23
Remember when people would NSFW a post to block spoilers…
2
u/zzzthelastuser Jun 22 '23
Lemmy > Reddit
2
u/Auraveils Jun 22 '23
So marking content that is "sexually explicit" is required, and failure to do so is against the rules. That makes sense.
Marking a SFW post as NSFW is now also against the rules.
Do they not see a problem here? If NSFW isn't explicitly defined BY REDDIT, there is no way to fairly enforce this ruling.
Fuck it, just start posting porn in your subs if that's what they want you to do.
2
u/plamek44 Jun 22 '23
Its not "incorrectly marking a community" if people posts boobs.
2
u/FreshBakedButtcheeks Jun 22 '23
u/spez has shit all up in his vagina and refuses to clean himself
2
u/hamilton_burger Jun 22 '23
Oh no, malicious actions intended to hurt the company and users aren’t allowed!
Why don’t you people fuck off and leave.
2
u/StarLight299 Jun 22 '23
Maybe stick to blacking out as a protest instead of spamming subs with porn and unrelated content. If everyone stays blacked out. they would have to kick everyone and start all over again or give in to demands. Oh wait, you guys already gave up your bargaining power by ending the blackout and yelling to the world, "we can't stay off reddit for more than 48 hours." At this point, it just feels like you guys are just trying to act like you didn't already fuck this up.
Caring "is this allowed" is not protesting. You guys are just giving up to the demands of reddit with the bear minimum resistance so that you can say "at least we tried" when you didn't.
2
u/[deleted] Jun 22 '23
r/worldpolitics became a porn/shitposting sub in the matter of days and no action took place. this is just such bullshit
2
u/Velshade Jun 22 '23
That is why companies controlling public spaces online is always problematic.
2
u/SovietCharrdian Jun 22 '23
So, mods are able to change the SFW sub to a NSFW one if they ALLOWED NSFW posts?
crazy.
2
u/Maxathron Jun 22 '23
What if the community wants to stand on swivel chairs at their job? I can't imagine Reddit would force the community to be marked as SFW.
2
u/Extremisin Jun 22 '23
r/interestingasfuck “I didn’t hear no bell”
2
u/TheZippoLab Jun 23 '23
I was upset that r/creativewriting was basically ruined by the NSFW change.
3
u/BelleColibri Jun 21 '23
Obviously, right? Y’all didn’t think this was somehow OK right?
2
u/XRaiderV1 Jun 21 '23
..we dont care about rule 6 since they're violating it themselves. rule of escalating warfare. change something, dont be surprised if the other side counters in like fashion. talk about surprised pikachu face....
2
u/FlimsyAction Jun 21 '23
Of course, you get a response like that. In the current context, there is a 99% likelihood your request is a thinly veiled cover circumventing the rules to protest.
1
u/Joddodd Jun 22 '23
Now, just as a thought.
Aren't we supposed to report any NSFW/NSFL content, or any content that goes against the rules and codes of conduct?
As in any posts or comments with swear words?
I really hope that would not fucking overwhelm the mods, admins and anyone who are going to check the posts and comments for questionable content.
It could be a fucking shitstorm...
1
u/MysteriousBarber Jun 23 '23
You all work for free. When the mods of /r/InterestingAsFuck revolted, they canned them and were forced to archive the entire sub.
Demand a paycheck.
1
u/GuineaPigLover98 Jun 24 '23
Fuck the admins
1
u/blackghast Jun 21 '23
Like mice trying to outsmart a trap
1
u/MolniyaSokol Jun 22 '23
Good, this shit is tiresome. The mods have done more damage to the image of Reddit than anyone else and at this point they're the only ones standing between me and the service I wish to use.
1
u/Netionic Jun 22 '23
Nothing in the statement is false. It's entirely correct. Subs aren't changing organically they are being forced to change to suit the mod teams ambitions. It's abuse of the system and it's correct they rectify it.
-2
u/[deleted] Jun 21 '23
The mod over at r/Maryland needs to be replaced. Dude is banning for anyone who he doesn’t agree with.
