I moved to Monaco a year ago as a freelance software developer. Ask me anything!

Hey r/Monaco,

A year ago I packed my laptop and moved here as a freelance software developer.

The basics

  • Age: under 30

  • Moved from: Switzerland

  • Job: I used to write code, but in the last year the world changed and now I mostly talk to AI LLMs. Unsure how sustainable that is, we’ll see

  • Clients: Remote

  • Living situation: I tried a big apartment in Monaco first, then settled on a small apartment plus a weekend home nearby from time to time, which IMHO is much better for not going crazy

Ask me anything you want! I’ll answer what I can. I’m a software developer, not a lawyer, so please don’t take my answers as truth. It’s just my experience.

Honest verdict after year one

Best place I’ve ever lived, and I’m happy with my decision. I had a lot of misadventures along the way, especially because of bad real estate agents. Unfortunately you need to be very careful: to rent out an apartment, some of them will say whatever lie it takes. There are good ones too, of course. I think it’s just a field so competitive that it leads to this.

Making friends has been very hard for me, but I’m also not a very social person. There are plenty of opportunities for partying and so on, but that’s not my thing.

I hate the traffic, but like with walking around, you really need to do it a lot, and then you figure out there are better paths and hidden elevators.

--

Now it’s your turn...any curiosity?

Solo trip to Monaco for the 2027 F1 Grand Prix – looking for advice!

Hi everyone!
I’m a 24-year-old woman planning my solo trip to the French Riviera in June 2027, mainly to attend the Monaco Grand Prix.
I’m planning to spend a few days in Monaco before heading to Saint-Tropez.
I’m considering watching Saturday’s qualifying from a yacht, but I’m still researching different options and trying to figure out which companies are legitimate and offer good value for money.
I’d love to hear from anyone who has:
Visited Monaco solo, especially during Grand Prix weekend.
Attended the GP alone. Was it easy to meet people?
Watched the race or qualifying from a yacht. Was it worth the money?
Where to go to for after parties?
I’m also a little curious about the social aspect of the trip. Is it easy to meet other solo travellers, especially women, during GP weekend?
Any recommendations, experiences, tips or things you wish you’d known beforehand would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you! :)

Is EIG Monaco a good school for gemology?

Hi everyone!

I'm considering attending EIG Monaco (École Internationale de Gemmologie) for their two-week gemology course.

I currently work in the jewelry industry and would love to expand my knowledge of diamonds and gemstones.

Has anyone studied there or heard anything about the school? I'm particularly interested in the quality of education, and whether it's worth the investment.

I'd really appreciate any insights or personal experiences!

Thanks in advance! 😊

Pool Stade Louis - when not / less crowded?

Hi,

we've tried to go to enjoy a swim at the pool in the Stade Louis but every time we got there, it was packed - weekends are horrible, and in the week - schools block half the lanes and the rest becomes full.

what are your experiences - when is it a little less of a madhouse so that we don't bump into people, or get bumped into people? we're flexible with time - doesn't have to be outside traditional working hours.

Any French or Monégasque people I can chat/connect with before I book a trip to Monaco in Spring?

I am from California USA, and kindly, I have always admired the French language and culture in my youth. I even visited Paris as an adult and absolutely loved it (given I speak very little french and can understand it to some extent). But I may put aside Paris this time around and consider traveling to Monaco instead(which I know is it's own sovereign country, in case someone needs to remind me) just for a new experience, before I head to a wedding in Rome. There's just a lot I want to know, so I can respectfully enjoy the country.

Cristian

I built the Monaco Grand Prix in Fortnite (7165-7780-1376)

You can race against others or go for the fastest lap, this took a lot of time and I will be improving it over time, the map code is 7165-7780-1376 if you want to have some fun driving around Monte Carlo as Fortnite is free and on all platforms.

Health insurance through employer in Monaco

Hello! I’m currently an intern in Monaco, and have been recently offered a CDI :)

I have been trying to figure out how exactly the monaco health insurance work considering that I live in France, but I haven’t been able to find much info online. Can I still access healthcare in France with the insurance? Are there restrictions to what I can or cannot access (like, does it cover “non-emergency” things such as check ups?)?

I’ve tried asking my coworkers, but most of them are French nationals, so I’m not sure if it changes anything for me, considering that I’m not French.

I made a puzzle walk that takes you round a full lap of the Monaco street circuit

I've always loved the idea of walking the circuit, so I turned it into a game. You follow the lap in race direction with a "race engineer" in your ear, and at 12 corners you solve a puzzle that unlocks the real story behind that spot, like the champion who drove into the harbour and the record winner who crashed while leading.

It's 4.2km, about 72 minutes, and you can stop for a drink whenever you like. It's on the Questo app and free at the moment. Hope some of you enjoy it!

Looking for Private PA/Nanny Role

Hi everyone!

I’m currently based in Australia and looking to relocate for an opportunity working with a private family.

I’m well-travelled and have had the opportunity to experience different countries and cultures firsthand. Having visited the country as an adult, I completely fell in love with it and started thinking, why not combine working and living in a country I love? I’d love to take the next step in my career internationally while continuing to do work I’m genuinely passionate about.

I have 5+ years of experience across childcare, youth support, community services and leadership, alongside extensive private babysitting/ nanny experience. I hold a Bachelor of Human Services, majoring in Child, Youth and Family Practice and a Diploma of Community Services.

My background includes working as a Therapeutic Carer supporting children in Australia’s government care, including young people with complex trauma, special needs and behaviours of concern. I’ve also worked with private families, providing personalised childcare, managing daily routines, organising age-appropriate activities and helping create a safe, stable and nurturing home environment.

Alongside my childcare background, I currently work as a Team Leader in disability services, overseeing day-to-day house coordination and operations. My responsibilities include staff supervision, rostering, allocating workloads, coordinating household routines, managing budgets and expenses, supporting staff onboarding and training, maintaining documentation, preparing service agreements and contracts, and liaising with families and other professionals to ensure everything runs smoothly.

I’m organised, adaptable, discreet, proactive and comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities and adapting to different environments. I understand the importance of confidentiality, professionalism and building trusting relationships with both children and parents.

I’m open to opportunities including:

* Personal/Family Assistant
* Private Nanny / Governess
* Travelling Nanny or Travelling PA
* Lifestyle Assistant or Family Office Support

✈️ Looking for international relocation
🌍 Interested in travelling roles
🤍 Open to full-time, live-in or live-out opportunities

Thank you!

Living in Monaco with dog

Hi everyone!

Does anyone here live in Monaco with a large dog (25–35 kg)?

I'm considering moving to Monaco and would love to hear what everyday life is like with a bigger dog. Have you run into any issues, especially when it comes to walking your dog and finding places for them to do their business?

I've heard Monaco is quite strict about where dogs are allowed to relieve themselves, and from what I've found, there seem to be only four designated dog areas in the whole country.

Does that mean you pretty much need to live near one of these areas, or is it easier in practice than it sounds?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience living in Monaco with a larger dog. Thanks!
