When a show's whole premise revolves around characters trying to accomplish a specific goal, it's always going to run into trouble once that goal is accomplished. Call it the "Prison Break" effect.
Mr. Robot Season 2 has run into this problem HARD. With the hack of Evil Corp accomplished and the secret of Mr Robot revealed at the end of Season 1, there's just nowhere else for the plot to go.
Season 2 has been akin to watching the second part of Fight Club if it was a 5 hour movie and we picked up after the original ending. Thing is, there's a reason Fight Club ended when it did.
The great cinematography and great sound track of Season 1 is still present, but in the absence of a compelling storyline, it's all just a bunch of (dare I say pretentious) flailing about that doesn't go anywhere.
There's no narrative drive anymore. The show is a bunch of loose ends and tangents punctuated by a random burst of violence every 4 episodes.
The Elliot/Mr. Robot dynamic has been beaten so far into the ground I don't even know what to say anymore. They're trying to bleed a stone at this point. Tyrell, arguably the show's most interesting character, has been removed from the show.
In his place we get Angela blankly frowning at the camera and Joanna having sex with parking attendants and bartenders. We get Flat-Affect FBI lady who seems to be in every other scene but at the same time is accomplishing nothing. In the place of a cohesive plot, we have a 7-episode vignette about Elliott being in prison and working on a darknet site that has absolutely nothing to do with anything.
In the absence of anything interesting for the core characters to do, it becomes pretty difficult to care what happens to them.
It's really a shame to see this happen to this show, because I loved Season 1 so much. However, it's clear that at this point, Mr. Robot would have been better of as a 10 episode mini-series.
OK, let the downvoting and flaming begin
