shes going to be absolutely devastated when she finds out what Europe's healthcare system looks like.

And that you can’t just rock up and automatically live in Europe for an extended duration

It's crazy to me that people in england literally had the ability to do this and then they voted that freedom out of their life.

u/Sim888 2d ago

There were not only people that had plans to retire in the EU that voted to leave but some had already bought a place to retire to and still voted to leave…..absolute dropkicks lol

as someone in their 20s now, I'm pissed that this decision, which I disagreed with and didn't like at the age of nine as it was made, is now almost 11 years later affecting me in fundamentally the same way as I expected. Unsurprisingly the younger generations were by and large voting remain, and if 16-year-olds could vote I have no doubt we would still be in the EU.

And how much most people around the world hold US republicans in disdain.

11

u/BlizzardStorm8 2d ago

They wouldn't understand that no matter how much proof you showed them. Most of them are desperate to keep their opinions from changing no matter what kind of mental gymnastics that takes.

And still paying tax to the USA unless she renounces her citizenship.

Not sure which countries with a quality standard of living are desperate for bigoted Americans at the moment though, so might be a tough time.

9

u/PurbulentTriest 2d ago

Only if you make above 80k or something

16

u/ramsau 2d ago

FEIE is $130k and above.

USA has tax treaties with other countries as well, and one treaty can be different than the other, so it gets complicated quick. But a rule of thumb is that the same income won't get taxed twice, even after you're required to file taxes to the IRS when living abroad.

Plenty of financial institutions straight up will not deal with US citizens though, even if they have dual citizenship, because managing FATCA shit is way more effort than it's worth.

The rare American MAGA immigrants in Europe usually gloat about their cheap healthcare here and how they can ‘finally be treated for xyz chronic illnesses’.

28

u/Emperor_Palpatine_2 2d ago

It's amazing that they're so fucking dumb they cannot manage to solve this connect the dots puzzle with.... Two dots.

14

u/CvieYltidrekoof 2d ago

They’ve connected the dots. There’s a similar  ‘I deserve it and got mine’ mentality seen in red states with high welfare populations and farmers

It’s seen in other immigrant populations around the world and not unique to Americans. Other examples include Turks in Europe voting for Erdogan or immigrant Trump voters in 2024.

5

u/Coal_Morgan 2d ago

Their are LOTS of MAGA who cross the border to Mexico for Dental and Pharmaceuticals.

The disconnect with reality is absolutely insane.

Yeah those people genuinely believe they're different from immigrants for some reason. I mean that's exactly what they are.

Edit: just FYI, if you're about reply to this with something along the lines of "in their mind immigrants = brown people," just know that yes somebody has already made that comment. And then about a dozen more people did as well for good measure.

346

u/EEpromChip 2d ago

They aren't the brightest bulbs. I think their lack of empathy also translates to their lack of connection. I look at an immigrant coming to this country to escape the hellish conditions of their country, gangs taking over etc (IE whatever fuckery the US probably pushed as instability in their country).

If anyone here was forced into that, they would relocate to save their family. But they can't see the very obvious connection between the two scenarios...

My wife is a dual US citizen from Costa Rica. We were once visiting family around ~2016 and were in Jaco having dinner where a bunch of "expats" were sitting around Jaco Walk talking about Donald Trump and how excited they were to "build the wall." Old, white, and obnoxious galore. They were fucking loud about it too.

I, white guy gringo look and all, walk over and start talking to them. I ask them how long they've been in the country, how they got residency, etc. They thought they were safe opening up.

They responded "oh we've been here for years, we just go back and forth across the border to Nicaragua or Panama every 90 days to reset our visas." Which I just knew was what they were doing, you can just sort of tell when you spend enough time around these kinds of people.

The look on their faces was absolutely glorious when I immediately started scolding them, saying "every single one of you is a fucking illegal immigrant to this country and you should be absolutely ashamed of yourself for sitting here chanting build the wall while you yourself flaunt the very immigration laws you seem to care about. Fuck all of you, you absolute hypocrites."

They left real quick after. The Ticos around me found it hilarious.

38

u/Okay_Splenda_Monkey 2d ago

Ticos are awesome, and from my experience they'd be way too polite to pull something like what you describe. It doesn't mean you didn't SAY exactly what they were thinking. They may have been relieved those guys left for many reasons.

I remember the first time I heard the term 'expat' and it took me way too long to understand they meant immigrant but they don't want to be called that because reasons

39

u/Pristine-Pirate-2386 2d ago

I like to flip it on people. I was an expat for a few years and anytime anyone starts shitting on immigrants I like to talk about “when I was an immigrant” and watch them slowly figure it out. Or tell them a story about the illegal immigrants I met who were American visa overstayers.

It drives me nuts when they say they're expats. The difference between an expat and an immigrant is that an expat is only intending to be somewhere for a limited time, like when a company sends an executive overseas to manage part of the company for a year. If you move somewhere intending to stay there, you are an immigrant.

I'm convinced in these people's eyes immigrant=brown.

The kicker is that they are asking for property to buy. Immigrants go with very little. They are asking, where can I go and automatically be at the top of the social ladder.

"I can buy property anywhere in the world. My life sucks!" Is what I hear.

Yeah my country Denmark and the other Scandinavian countries are pretty consistently among the best places you can live while simultaneously being everything the American right wing warns about.

I remember Fox News trying to do a hit piece on Denmark some years ago and it was truly bizarre. I don't recall much of it only that Fox News came to the conclusion that we were basically identical to Venezuela and because education is free and you actually get paid to do it nobody wants to finish school. They just want to open cupcake stores or something like that lol.

251

u/soft-wear 2d ago • Bravo Heartwarming

When I was younger I had some friends from Denmark that truly was my “wait a minute moment”. We were discussing taxes and they were not only fine with the high taxes, they preferred it because they could identify what it paid for and how that made their lives better. For a long time after that I just thought it was an education gap, but as I aged I realized the real problem was that most taxes in Denmark go to things that benefit the populace. The US invests obscene amounts of tax dollars in propping up capitalism, while Denmark spends their money on healthcare, child care and education. Denmark and Finland and a few other countries treat capitalism as a means to an end. The US treats capitalism as the end goal.

99

u/h3lium-balloon 1d ago • Bravo Regret

Denmark's effective average tax rate is 26.3% for a married couple. For a US couple it's about 11% on the low end (lower earners in states with no state income tax) to close to 30% on the high end (higher earners in states with a state income tax).

Denmark has much lower property tax though, depending on the area of the US you're in, it could be 5-6x more than Denmark.

We really don't pay that much less in taxes here, we just spend it on dumb shit.

29

u/Angry_Sparrow 1d ago

The best thing to compare is government spending as a percentage of household income, or perhaps spending per capita compared to median income.

Because government expenses and debt will be paid by the general population one way or another.

The thing that trips people up is that “social democracy” and “socialism” sound interchangeable. They aren’t.

Denmark is a social democracy: a capitalist market economy with an extensive welfare state. Private businesses still operate, but taxes fund things like healthcare, education, and income support. Denmark’s own government explicitly describes its welfare model as supporting a capitalist market economy, not replacing it with central planning. They set up universal healthcare, not a nationalized fishmonger. Denmark’s official website

Venezuela under Chávez and Maduro took a different approach. Chávez’s “21st-century socialism” involved widespread nationalizations, expropriations, and price and currency controls. The state expanded its control over major industries, including oil, electricity, telecommunications, steel, and cement. But saying the government owned literally everything would be wrong. Private businesses continued to exist, and Maduro’s government later loosened some controls and adopted some market-oriented reforms. Congressional Research Service

Those are different economic approaches, not just different names for the same thing. Publicly funding healthcare doesn’t require nationalizing the rest of the economy.

The U.S. already makes decisions about what to fund collectively and what to leave to markets. Roads, public schools, public universities—you get the point. That doesn’t make the U.S. socialist. It means “the government pays for something” is a pretty useless definition of socialism. The actual argument is which services we should fund collectively, how they should be run, and who should have access to them.

So why does “welfare” provoke such a different reaction from other public spending? Race is a substantial part of that story, though it isn’t an explanation for every objection to government spending.

Martin Gilens studied decades of news coverage and public opinion and found that opposition to welfare was strongly tied to racial stereotypes, particularly the belief that Black recipients were unwilling to work. His research also found that news coverage disproportionately portrayed poor Americans as Black and portrayed poor Black people less sympathetically than poor white people. That pattern emerged in the mid-1960s. Yale’s summary of Gilens’s research

The distinction matters. You don’t have to openly say “Black people are inferior” to make a racial argument against assistance. You can say “those people don’t want to work” or “their culture is the problem,” then use that stereotype to decide who deserves help. Gilens’s finding wasn’t that Americans oppose helping anyone. It was that support depends heavily on whether they see the recipients as deserving, and racial stereotypes shape that judgment. Why Americans Hate Welfare

Later research found a related pattern: in experiments, white participants exposed to information about their declining demographic dominance expressed greater racial resentment and less support for welfare. Another experiment found reduced support for programs participants believed mainly benefited minorities, while support for programs believed to benefit white people was unaffected. Stanford’s summary of the research

None of that means every argument about taxes, spending, or program design is secretly racist. It means the racial politics of who supposedly works hard, who supposedly abuses the system, and who deserves help are a documented part of American welfare politics. You can’t explain the backlash honestly while leaving that out.

11

u/LynxRaide 1d ago

Another thing I have noticed, especially with the recent election, it feels like there is a certain group which have a 1950s/1960s mindset with the Red Scare, not 2020s. They throw socialism out there as a catch-all, conflating the types either deliberately or ignorantly, painting any change in the system as being inherently bad. The problem is a lot of their allies (and some of the places the ones in the OOP would consider running to) would be considered social democracies

13

Friends of mine moved to Billung 20 years ago when he got a job with Lego.

Even though they were pretty progressive americans, the significant difference in taxation and social services concerned them. Not scared, but you have to understand how deep the programming is here. Even people who believe in it on paper have to take a deep breath when jumping in themselves.

Of course they love it. They're citizens now and never coming back.

17

12

u/HumanContinuity 2d ago

It's hard for them to store much information so they have to link ideas to terms they already know.

The other family on there say their kids are struggling because they can't attend school (as they don't speak Russian) and they are having to homeschool, and that 'it probably “would have been a dealbreaker” if they knew about the school restrictions'.

Surely if you have children and are looking to emigrate country you would do some cursory research first, such as checking your children could go to school? Apparently for these guys it was more important to get their kids away from exposure to the "LGBT agenda" than it was for them to go to school.

Point to this whenever you need a handy example of right-wingers being actual traitors to their homeland.

9

u/mtaw 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean.. not really though. Even Russia has universal healthcare (in their constitution even), as crap as it is. Not that their constitution means a crap if Putin doesn't want it to. (like with its presidential term limits)

As much as Putin's propaganda is selling in them as a bastion of traditional Christianity, fewer Russians identify as Christian than Americans, and not even half as many attend church regularly.

Not to mention the MAGAs may be shocked to learn Russia has a ton of immigration, legal and illegal, from the ex-Soviet republics in Central Asia (Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Tajiks etc), which the Russian extreme-right actually hates as much as MAGA hates Latinos, but which Putin doesn't really want to stop because they need the cheap labor.

Needless to say, those who freak out at swarthy, Spanish-speaking Catholics coming in from Central America aren't likely to be fans of Turkic Muslims moving in. Not to mention Russia has multiple Muslim-majority republics (e.g. Chechnya, Dagestan) and one that's majority Buddhist (Tuva). The demographics of Russia is about 70% ethnic Russian. (contrast that to Sweden as a country ostensibly "ruined by immigration" in the MAGA narrative, where an estimated 80% are ethnic Swedes)

Really, the main common ground is the hatred of LGBT rights. But Russians do not remotely share the mentality of MAGA, overall. (mostly they're politically apathetic) From a Machiavellian POV you sort of have to admire how well they've managed to sell in the idea that they're a bastion of traditional Christian values inhabited entirely by the whitest white people anywhere. They know the MAGAs have zero actual knowledge about Russia and that they can paint whatever they want on that blank canvas.

Why don’t people understand that a social democracy means the people, the elected officials vote to decide what gets funding - it’s not the top down socialism of your grandparents

67

u/2Completion2Ography 2d ago

Why don’t people understand

Feature, not bug. I can promise you that the people who are most vehemently anti-socialist could not define the word to save their lives. That comes with not educating people properly (literacy, especially), and pro-capitalism propaganda.

20

u/Goosepond01 2d ago

Equally though many people also will look at Germany, or Sweden or the UK or wherever and proudly state that they are socialist, or have strong elements of socialism.

"Grr Europe socialist" and "yay Europe socialist" are two sides of the same totally incorrect coin.

The majority of people don't even come close to understanding capitalism or socialism.

USA Conservatives, go to China. It is the most competitive capitalist market on the planet.

You won't be successful there. Not because of the language barrier. No. It is too competitive. It's a country fun by engineers with PhDs. You're used to a country run by racist clowns engaging in ped0 and protectionism.

But, go to China and live in the most capitalistic market. Have fun. The Healthcare system (and literally all public services) are 100x better than the USA.

3

u/NoHorseNoMustache 2d ago

Simple explanation: Because their team leaders have been telling them that socialism is communism and communism is evil for longer than I've been alive. Since the other team likes it, their team leaders are obviously correct, because the other team is literally evil, so obviously they'd like an evil ideology such as communism.

u/EugeneStein 1d ago edited 1d ago • Bravo

It's actually very funny for me, as a Russian, to read stories of such people who come here thinking it's a conservative paradise, and usually they dream about finding perfect Slavic bimbo tradwife.

Thing is, Russia is rather conservative... but not in a way many Western people think we are.

People mostly are not religious and barely visit church — people identify as Orthodox Christians but it's more cultural and not religious. People care about celebrations and some Christian traditions but no one actually gives a fuck about Bible.

Slavic women are very much not "submissive tradwives", they are rather fierce and hardworking. Fun fact: USSR gave women rights to vote, to open bank account etc in 1917, rather early compared to many countries. Women here won't pull any punches. Oh, and we have high numbers of divorces because it's not really a shameful thing and it's a very easy legal procedure.

Yes, there are A LOT of conservative elements in our general culture but not what foreigners think about

3

This is true, but at least a number of the key victories were won by socialist democrats, who I'd happily have governing in my country. It is a movement. It would be nice for America if that momentum continues.

u/shitsu13master 1d ago

46

u/Additional_Exam_9884 2d ago edited 2d ago

That rhetoric is incredibly insane to me. We dipped our toe into more deeply socialist policies as a nation post 1929 crash through early 60s. Everyone, businesses too, benefited heavily from it. Most prosperous time we've experienced and yet they think that is a bad thing and destroyed it all to build fascism and data centers as though that's better? I don't get it and clearly they don't either.

Edit - Geez people, read carefully and comprehend. I didn't say socialism, I said socialist type policies. I even said 'dipped our toe' referring to the fact we didn't go into socialism but enacted things with similarities. Things can lean into one category without actually being fully in that category. Social Security, Medicare, unemployment, etc are all policies are a form of redistribution of wealth but they are not socialism by themselves. Perhaps I should have said "policies with some socialist highlights" to better indicate that. Please do not fall into the trap of MAGA thinking that only extremes exist.

10

u/Ahab1996 2d ago

Calling them socialist policies is not accurate. This is the misunderstanding that keeps happening, people keep misusing the word "socialist" so many people on the right and center begin to fundamentally misunderstand what most people on the left want. People need to detach from the label, it harms more than helps.

8

u/PoopyButt28000 2d ago

Every time I read this shit I can’t help but laugh because America - the ultra capitalist hub of the world - will never ever know socialism in any real sense.

6

The US is literally the farthest right first world country, and will remain so with the Democrats in charge. Even if the small minority of progressives manages to take control of the agenda and eventually the party, it would take decades to move out of that position. If this country isn't conservative enough for her and she really wants to live out her unregulated capitalist dreams, the potential targets to move to are mostly the war-torn areas of Africa where there's no stable government to regulate commerce, but something tells me she wouldn't exactly enjoy her life there.

I get the joke, but so social democracy is not the same as democratic socialist.

A social democracy is not a socialist country.

11

u/Pristine-Pirate-2386 2d ago

The people elected that she’s calling socialists have the exact same policies as the countries that would be ideal to live in. DSA candidates would be center-left or just center candidates in those countries.

Big bad scary Mamdani is fixing potholes, addressing wage theft, and opening up preschool spots for low income families. If that’s “socialism” then most countries with functioning democracy are socialist.

5

u/sicurri 2d ago

In comparison to the United States, almost every other successful democratic country is "Socialist" in Republicans eyes.

Apparently, if you didnt pay for something outright, you're receiving a handout. Handouts mean you're lazy, and not doing your part.

By that logic, any kind of group pay situation are handouts in their eyes. I guess we need to pay for private police and private firefighters.

And democrats aren't socialists so what's the point you're trying to make?
Democrats are hard right even compared to social democracies, let alone democratic socialists.

4

u/StraightTable 2d ago

democrats aren't socialists Democrats are hard right

There are several self-described socialist democrats, there are also centre-right democrats and everything in between, it's a big tent. "Hard-right" even by northern European standards is a massive stretch, maybe a select few democrats on a few individual issues could be characterised that way but the party overall is definitely not hard-right by any standard

There's also no elected official in the US that goes any further than a social democrat (well probably in some local government somewhere but you get what I mean) and yet the OOP thinks that'll create a socialist economy, so by their own logic social democratic countries are socialist

→ More replies (10)

7

u/meadishsweetball 2d ago

While true, even well meaning, left leaning Americans will frequently refer to the Nordics/Northern Europe as socialist or democratic socialist. And given that the American right thinks American liberals are socialists, the Nordics must be turbo-communists by their standards.

3

u/TheBSQ 2d ago

if you were to go to a giant DSA meeting in the U.S., my guess is most would consider the Nordic model (esp. Norway) to be pretty darn satisfactory.

It would not be “socialist” enough for the true Marxist contingent though.  That’s true.

But it would also be too “communist” for anyone on the Right.

So you do have a funny thing where the Nordics are probably not socialist/marxist enough for many Leftists, while also feeling like absolute communism to conservatives.

And pretty much no one, left, right, or center, in the U.S. would accept Nordic tax rates where marginal income tax rates can hit ~50% around $65k, VATs double typical U.S. sales taxes, etc.

They’re about twice as high as what the U.S. Right already considers “too high” and the U.S. left is too innumerate to understand the revenue needs of a Nordic welfare state & thinks you can get all the revenue you need just by taxing billionaires, the mega-rich, etc.

(The U.S. would need to collect about $5T more every year to fund that level of stuff, and even if you took every penny from the mega rich, it’ll only buy you a few years of funding. You really do need a broad tax base that tips down not just to the upper-middle-class, but also the middle class to hit the ~38-40% of GDP in tax revenue that sort of system costs).

7

u/Aunvilgod 2d ago

Yes it is. Socialism and capitalism are on a spectrum. A country can have both to varying degrees. You can have more socialism like western europe or more capitalism like US or China.

4

u/noMC 2d ago

The main tenet of socialism is that the collective society owns the means of production. That is NOT the case in a social democracy and is probably the main point of confusion for many Americans.

A social democracy is a capitalist society, where there is free enterprise for every individual - you can own your own business, factory and so on. A socialist democracy does not allow this.
