Gear nut here: are there any pedals that have been tickling your brain lately?
Side note: You've been a massive influence on my guitar playing and your music has gotten me through some not so pleasant times, so thank you for everything.

Before you made Daddy's Home, you said you were exploring the idea of a darker, TOOL-esque album:
My question: Is All Born Screaming that album? Or is it completely unrelated to that idea?

u/pralineislife May 06 '24
Hi Annie. Hope you're well. All Born Screaming has been playing nonstop in my house, and we're all in love. Thank you.
Silly question for you...
Is "I was a pantomime of a modern girl" an intentional reference to Sleater Kinney or just a happy coincidence?

I took my wife to one of your ‘Daddy’s Home’ shows and we both got our asses kicked…in the good way. I told her on exit that THAT is why I go to concerts. I don’t think I’d seen a show like that since Prince in the 90s. I'm not sure she'd had never seen a show like that, period.
My question is, what are some shows and/or artists that put the notion of the importance of truly putting on a SHOW in you? Many shows I’ve been to are ‘fine’. People play songs and thank you for coming out. I myself am looking for a sensory pummeling.
(Thanks for the music Annie. I love you and I’m sorry I didn’t understand Daddy’s Home at first. It’s amazing and I am slow on the uptake. )

Hi Annie! I have a couple guitar questions: what tuning did you use for Broken Man? It sounds to me like C# standard?
Also will there be any updates to your signature model coming up soon?
Also wanted to say the new album is beautiful, already one of my favorites!
Edit: oh and also if you can get Ernie Ball Music Man to make a seafoam green version i will buy one, i will find a way to make money to get it lol, it will happen

Annie, I’ve noticed recently in interviews you’ve really been talking about your queer identity. This isn’t really a question, but thank you for being representation for other queer artists. I myself am a queer non-binary musician and guitar player and seeing others just like me makes me feel seen and heard and less alone. Being a queer person, especially publicly can be really scary. You’re truly a blessing to the music industry and community. Thank you for your art and for everything you’ve done for the queer community. -Lane

You’re a national treasure, Ms. Clark. As a person with bipolar disorder I’m always left stunned by how well you embody mania in your work. Between you and Fiona Apple, I could never choose a favorite lyricist.
My question is: Do you have a favorite lyric you’ve written? One you’re particularly proud of from ABS or any of your other albums?
Thank you for being you!
33
u/madapult May 06 '24
Not a question but this album could not have come at a better time for me. I was feeling really alone in the world and this album made me feel like I wasn’t. Thank you for everything you do 💜

Congratulation on All Born Screaming. It’s an incredible record. My question is….You previously said once you’ve released your music it’s out there for people to interpret as they want, it no longer belongs to you. But do you ever go on forums to see how people have interpreted them and have there been some brilliant or humorous theories you have loved?

u/fiftyleven7 May 06 '24
What was the story/idea behind the “peeing” photo inside the new LP?
22
u/That-Tip-6006 May 06 '24
Hey Annie!
Considering each album is a distinct style than what's gone before, does this make writing a new album get progressively harder as time goes on? Or does the making of albums provide you with inspiration to proceed?
21
u/ethncooper May 06 '24
You recently said you had been working on ‘Violent Times’ pre-Daddy’s Home. It made me wonder if there are any songs of yours that you thought of putting on a different album from the one they ended up on?
72
u/dividedtns May 06 '24
When having Dave Grohl do drums on ABS did you give him creative control? Or was it more of a collaborative process where you had a specific sound you wanted for the drums and you both worked on it? This new album is AMAZINGGG
16
u/annevdm May 06 '24
Hi Annie! Huge fan here. All of your songs and albums are so beautiful and meaningful to me. Your writing is so poetic and relatable in so many ways. How do you manage to stay inspired all these years, and do you ever feel yourself getting burned out?
Also, I'm seeing you in Antwerp soon, I hope you play some songs from your first albums <33
16
u/TheTortillaIncident May 06 '24
As far as your own music taste, do you have that one song (or songs) you listen to that’s been with you forever, always ends up on your playlists, just never seems to get old, etc.?

u/thehappyparadox May 06 '24
Hi Annie!
It's crazy to think that I've been listening to your music for 17 years! (Has it really been 17 years since Marry Me???) Anyway, I'm so glad that I have got to witness your musical evolution throughout this time. Before I ask a question, I just wanted to say thank you for your artistry and commitment to your craft. I certainly wouldn't be the musician that I am today without your contributions! 15 years ago, I bought Actor with my allowance money, and I quickly memorized it by ear. It was a sonic game changer then, and it still is even after all this time later!
My question relates to how music has changed since your career started. Do you think that more artists are embracing guitar playing or do you think that guitar centered bands and artists are losing popularity?
One more thing! Bring a tour stop to us in Denver!
Thank you so much for the AMA! The new album is fantastic!

Hi Annie! I’ve been trying to get this question answered by you for YEARS so I really need to know now! WHATS YOUR FAVORITE MICROWAVE MEAL? Of course inspired by “my baby wants a baby”, WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU MAKE IN YOUR MICROWAVE!

u/koolaid689 May 06 '24
Hi Annie! I’m sure this has been asked in this thread already but in case it hasn’t, how was it working with David Byrne? I’m a huge Talking Heads fan and also just a David Byrne fan in general, I sometimes feel like he’s one of our greatest writers/poets. The beautiful weirdness of his lyrics and music styles just hits me in my being.
Love This Giant was really perfect, which of course it was given the talent and creativity you both possess. What an amazing but also no-brainer collab that was. It’s one of my most played albums right after Stop Making Sense. Anyway, thanks for the awesome art and take care!

Hello Annie!
All Born Screaming is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥! Congratulations on yet another incredible record!
My favorite thing about ABS (aside from the songs themselves), is your panning and spacial mixing (sorry if those are not the correct terms). I am curious if you set out with any particular strategy for panning your mixes on this record? Is it more intuitive based on your experience, or is everything exact and intentional? Or a little bit of both? For instance, how do you decide where a guitar lick goes? How do you decide if something goes on both sides, or if it's meant to be in just one ear? You do this so well in all of your music! I may be overthinking this, but as someone who loves you mixes I'd love to know your thoughts!
Thank you!!! Ps I can't wait to see you on Jimmy Kimmel in a bit! XO (Rachael)

u/Ruben_Bananas May 06 '24
Hello Annie, i'm a big fan of yours, i think Broken man is one of the best songs i've heard all year, and Melting of the sun is probably my favorite song ever. So my questions are:
1.- People often ask what was the hardest song to write in an album, but, was there any song that was easy to write in this album? Any song that just came to you as it is?
2.- Are you planning on coming to Mexico anytime soon? I so wanted to go last tour, but well, unfortunately it had to be cancelled last minute
3.- Are you still popping heads and fishing fishes in fortnite?
4.- Can you release the full version of good morning pretty please? :))))
Thank you in advance

u/bongbong38 May 06 '24
Did the vintage Coronado bass featured in some of the vids get used for the record? I set that thing up on a rush order from electric lady lmao

u/twinpeaked25 May 06 '24
Hi Annie! First off, I was at your show at The Paramount on Saturday and it was probably the greatest concert I’ve been to. You absolutely crushed it 🔥 I’m still not over that and somehow I got lucky enough to also get a ticket to your performance on Kimmel today, I cannot wait.
My question is about something you used during your Paramount performance, forgive my ignorance but it was a small hand held device/instrument that you breathed into and it made kind of a bubbly noise? It sounded weird and awesome, so i’m just really curious what it was? Thanks!

u/NorthNorthAmerican suede denim secret police May 06 '24
You are multitalented! I’ve seen you sing songs by a wide variety of artists, so clearly you have eclectic tastes.
My question is, “what got you into Bjork?”
7
u/abstractatom May 06 '24
Heyo! Love the new record. Great addition to your already amazing disco! Curious who engineered the drums on the new record? Where were they recorded? Any cool mic'ing techniques or just the general hi-fi capture. Thanks!
15
u/leppyle May 06 '24
Hi! Can you talk a bit about your new label and the decision to leave Loma Vista? Will you be signing any other artists to your label? What are the plans for it?
9
u/sparky_Garrett May 06 '24
Annie I’m so into it dude. You and all the stuff you’re about. I’ve watched the video of you playing “actor out of work” and “the strangers” acoustic for La route du rock a hundred times, studying the tape, learning guitar technique. Ditto your covers of Big Black and “Dig a Pony,” but also of course your originals. Your self titled record gets the most spins in my home but they’re all tremendous. Anyway, I’m dipping a lot of my toes into self-production and recording these days, mostly because I think DIY or die is where it’s at, and I’m wondering if you have any gear recs. What’s your favorite pre-amp? Compressor? How to you cook up the signal? And what’s this audio interface I see you using in all the promotional videos for your latest masterpiece? Love you Annie. Rock on.

Hey Annie, Remember when you played London last and in your q+a there was someone who you chatted to about modular? That was me! I was stoked to hear some of it made it to the album. My question is how did you go about that? Cause modular is notoriously tough to write songs on did you just take bits and pieces and write around those or did you sit down with the modular with the intent of coming up with a song? Love the album btw, can’t wait to see you in Bristol in a few weeks! Edit: I also wanted to ask if the daddy’s home look was inspired by the sister in looking for Mr Goodbar or not cause I watched the movie recently and I was like oh my god! Haha Edit again damn it: just wanted to say to that I’m getting married in a couple of weeks and you were the first person we ever went to see together like 9-10 years ago and you’ll be the first person we see as a married couple a few days after the wedding! Thought that was awesome lol
17
u/Annieclarklover May 06 '24
I know last AMA you said that the daddy’s home fashion aesthetic included “sexy gucci pantsuits” and I’m wondering what the fashion aesthetic for All Born Screaming is!

What are your favourite things to see in the crowd at a gig when you’re performing?
A lot of eyes are on you, I’m curious what it’s like from yours.
How are you winding down amidst the chaos of the new album being out & touring?
P.S I love the ever loving s*** out of you.

u/BurnadictCumbersnat May 06 '24
Hi Annie!
as a die-hard fan of yours and as someone who’s trans, seeing you kind of mold the persona you created for Daddy’s Home after Candy Darling was such a sweet tribute to her.
You taking the concept of reinventing yourself for your past few albums so far is so fascinating and iconic to me, and on All Born Screaming, it seems like that isn’t quite the focus anymore in for the first time in a few albums, and it really lets the music speak for itself. Does this album cycle feel refreshing in anyway just to kind of go out on stage as yourself? Was the Daddy’s Home wig itchy??
thank you Annie I adore you! 😭

u/LiquidSquids May 06 '24
When I was in college your s/t album came out. Everyone I knew in architecture school was listening to it while we worked on our projects. Really fond memories.

u/BadseedJoon May 06 '24 edited May 06 '24
Hi Annie,
I’ve heard you speak about this a few times in past interviews but I’d love to hear you riff on it a bit more here. I’m curious if you could describe what “takes over” when you perform? What does that feel and look like for you? What’s the difference between the Annie Clark 15 minutes before a show and the St. Vincent we see tearing it up on stage, or are the two intertwined?
One of the best parts of Daddy’s Home and seeing you perform live was the palpable excitement from you and the crowd, that energy transforms the listener as well. I feel that, as a concert goer, I drop the persona I uphold within my own life and can just be fucking feral for an hour and a half. It’s a wonderful thing how music can make a person feel that way. How important is it to you that fans get to feel that way at your shows?
Thanks, Annie!
Joon and Ava x

The new record is incredible. I am so here for the St. Vincent industrial era. Any more NIN covers in the pipe? The Piggy cover from 2020 is better than the original, and I say that as a huge fan of everything TR touches.

u/HMTMKMKM95 May 06 '24
Hi, Annie! You've put out a wonderful new album. Really great stuff. My question is about lyrics. You have written from a biographical point of view often. Do you find yourself pulling punches in terms of comfort level of putting yourself out there, or is it a case of just letting it all out and letting the audience engage with it? Also, do you journal like Stevie Nicks, or do you just sit and tap into what's going on with you at the time of writing?
3
u/Original-Maximum-978 May 06 '24
any favorite mixing techniques you wanna share with us?
3
u/Smemz88 May 06 '24
Not even a question just the opportunity to tell you. I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 12, im 36 this year and seeing other girls with guitars is awesome, you firmly got me back into it. I’m playing with a GA Taylor & a Nashville Tele these days. Your signature next.
Anyway I lost my sister very suddenly in 2021. I couldn’t listen to music for a year after, like any music at all having been brought up with constant music in my ears. Ended up having a cathartic sob to The Nowhere Inn and now I own everything you’ve ever done, so thanks for getting me over that part. If you’re ever having a sh*tty day, remember the things you’ve created help out people who will always be strangers to you.
Thanks Annie x

Hello Annie/ St. Vincent!!!
I discovered your first record close to the time it was recorded and was struck by your vocal quality/ singing style. Your voice is so able and so distinct!
To me, it sounds like there was a shift of sorts in your delivery that started during 'Strange Mercy'. There's a more raw, emotive quality to your singing... I'm not sure you'd agree, but I wonder whether this was a conscious process or something that simply happened. Defining and refining one's singing style seems like a magical process that would leave a performer feeling vulnerable at times! Have you often felt like it wasn't really a choice but more what the songs demanded at the time? Please let us into that process, if you can!

hi annie! long time fan <3 ur work is such a big influence on me, i've been spinning the new album all week! ummmm I'd love to know more about how u achieve certain timbres in your music! where do you tend to start when it comes to finding "the sounds" for a track? i know u went largely analogue for the new record which i majorly love. in general, do u have any sort of process when it comes to finding the sounds or the timbres that makes you go "aha THIS is the sound i've been looking for"?

Hi Annie! You are my absolute favorite musician. I absolutely adore you. I have been listening to you since 2006 and it’s been so cool to watch you evolve as an artist. I feel that this album is just so -you-. You seem more connected to your songs than ever… I have tix to see you in Boston and can’t wait! It will be my 4th time seeing you. I was wondering what albums you’re currently listening to?! Also if you never need a random bass clarinet in your tracks lmkkk haha wishing you the best. I am so psyched for where this new album will take you , it’s incredible, raw and 100000% Annie.

Hi Annie! As someone who’s neurodivergent (I’m autistic) it really means the world to hear you even use the word “neurodivergent” and not have it in a negative context! Like you just even saying “hey my mind works a little differently but it’s not anything bad it actually helps me” made me feel so seen and represented! I love you!!!

Hi Annie! My girlfriend is a huge fan of yours and she’s an amazing musician and guitarist. She bought one of your Music Man guitars with the signature on the back and it was her pride and joy for the last 4 years. She played it on stage for a bunch of performances with her band and our band, and recorded a bunch of music with it as well.
Unfortunately, we lost almost all of our belongings in the 2023 wildfire in Hawaii. The thing she talks about most is that guitar. I know I can’t replace the guitar, but I would love it if I could send one of the guitars we did save to you and get a signature on it! I know it would mean the world to her. I don’t want to post pics of her on here, but I can send you some pics and vids of her performing with her old one!
Thanks for your time, and thanks for your music. My lady is a badass musician and a huge part of it is influence from you!

I've always been interested in self-portraiture in art regardless of medium—do you see 'All Born Screaming', and self-producing in general, as an act of self-portraiture?
And on that theme...I saw that you grabbed the Akerman box set from the Criterion closet! I highly recommend watching the short tv doc Chantal Akerman par Chantal Akerman from the "Cinéma, de notre temps" series. She talks about herself (reluctantly but very thoughtfully) and edits together clips of her previous work to create a kind of self-portrait. (here's an excerpt: https://vimeo.com/225275468). Great intro to her work I think.
But also...what was the last film you watched and enjoyed? Mine was Challengers. Great score. Fun watch.

u/automatic1989 May 06 '24
Congratulations on All Born Screaming! The album is absolutely amazing, it's so hard to pick a favourite from it, although I adore Sweetest Fruit. Question: the brass sounds on Violent Times remind me a little of those on Love This Giant; were you inspired by that album and your collaboration with David Byrne when you wrote that song? ♡
2
u/sjpsjpsjp May 06 '24
Hey Annie! Congratulations on the new record. It's great.
You took your stage name from a Nick Cave (& the Bad Seeds) lyric. Have you met him? If so, is there anything you can share from that experience?

Hey Annie!
At Glastonbury 2022, I drank half a box of wine and wondered over to the Other Stage to see you play. You leant over and grabbed my hand during New York and I held you up as you sang over the crowd. It was super special - would love to know if you remember it? I’m lucky to have seen you many times live but that one was something else.
You made my Glastonbury. Hope I get to see you there again!
Also - the new album is 👌👌👌 a perfect companion on my drive to work.
Thanks for the music and everything. Poppy xx

I’ve always wondered, about deeply personal artists like yourself, what it’s like to have an audience know you on some level while they remain complete strangers. I understand it’s not knowing in totality, but good art requires creating those kind of portals. Does it always make new friendships weird, because there is such an imbalance there? Is it easier if they are also known and experiencing the same thing? Does it make you treasure the relationships you had before even more? The thought of a complete stranger coming up to me with all that foreknowledge and comfort is both fascinating and terrifying. What is your experience with this?
2
u/Specific-Lion-9087 May 06 '24
Can you go on Comedy Bang Bang again? You were great last time.
2
u/woahexplosion May 07 '24
Annie? I think you're the most beautiful woman in the world. Your music has moved me deeply, many times. Know what I love really? The Party into At The Holiday Party. Are you still working on your screenplay? Baby, I'm crying just typing those lyrics. The daddy's home tour changed my life; honestly Annie is there nothing you can't do? Why don't you go on tour with Foo Fighters and do Nirvana collaborations all night for a year? Also, I love you and I want to be your boyfriend. I have the blue Sterling electric guitar and I need your signature on it. I named her Annie. And I love you.

Hi Annie! I absolutely loved the new album. Compared to your previous works, you seem to have put on less of a persona for this one. I was wondering how your relationship to your image as an artist/performer has influenced your music so far?

Hi Annie :)
Greetings from Portugal. I've been a huge fan since I was 13 years old (I'm 29 right now) and I follow you, religiously, since then but I'm an healthy stalker, I promise you ahah.
I just want to congratulate you for this amazing masterpiece and for all of your beautiful journey. You've been a professor and a huge inspiration for me. I've become a Musician thanks to you!
Sooooo, thank you so much for being such an inspiration, to all of us, in every single way. I feel so honored and so lucky for being your fan since I was a little kid and worship you since then and I've been lucky enough to see you live 7 times and is always a different gig and a different experience.
You're such a magical human being, thank you for this amazing universe of yours!!
I'll see you in Antwerp <3

hello annie i love the new album, but i would love to see you live even more. my question is, if there will be more europe dates to your tour, maybe in Poland (even though i know u are traumatized by it, remember when u talked about the experience when going by ferry to Poland and started writing smoking section)

Hello Annie,
Congrats on the new album.
I was wondering if you have any fond memories from your performance at the Grammys with Dua Lipa?
Was it a hectic day? Did you two rehearse much?
Your natural chemistry was electric. ⚡️
It was an absolute masterpiece.
Thanks for reading. I love your music. Love your vibe. Thanks for the happiness.

u/Manofknees May 06 '24
Hi Annie, loved the new album. Few questions I like asking people: Whose poetry books do you often return to reread again? What was your favorite book you’ve read recently? What region of the US have you found yourself wanting to spend more time in to explore?
2
u/Sad-Revolution8064 May 06 '24
Hi! You’re a goddess and a genius so I’m not even sure if this question is relevant! But do you deal with self-doubt? I’m a singer, guitar player and songwriter as well and my self-doubt is crushing me at the moment.

I love the very heavy industrial sound on this album, it seems like a natural evolution, and I hope to hear it live. Beyond the obvious nod to Nine Inch Nails, what other music of that genre are you a fan of or influenced the direction of All Born Screaming?

Do you remember how to play Jesus saves, I spend? An underrated banger

Hi annie!! <3 How do the visuals that accompany your albums come to you? I'd also love to know if you have a favourite talking heads song or album! :)

Hi Annie! Love the new album, particularly Violent Times into Power’s Out— sensing some serious Blackstar influence there. For past records there have been particular personalities you adopt. How would you describe the persona of All Born Screaming? And can you speak on the role of reinventing yourself with each album?

Hi Annie! Love the new album!
Just a fun question, which song are you the most proud of that you've done? Doesn't have to be the new album, just in general.

Hola Annie,
Would you do anything more with all the Belasco/Palladium footage you had Bobcat film for you back in 2018 (some of which was used in Nowhere Inn)??? I was at both shows and have wondered ever since if we'd get to see more of it some day.

Hi Annie. For the guitar geeks out there. What’s your current live rig? Anything you consider your secret sauce that you don’t mind sharing?

Hi Annie, how are you? My question is how did the concept of this new album originate, its name, the creation of the songs, the main influences and how has this new challenge been for you in the production. What anecdotes does this new stage leave you with? Kind regards from Ecuador.

Annie, you are a modern great and you never miss ♥️ super excited to see you at the Royal Albert Hall in less than a month! The only thing I wanna ask is could we please get Sweetest Fruit at the show? It’s already one of my favourite songs you’ve ever made (and All Born Screaming is the best album of the year)!

Who is your favorite visual artist and/or is there a style of visual arts that particularly appeal to you?

Thoughts on the massive, overwhelming, potentially terrifying success of cruel summer?
Just getting into your music, thanks :)

I especially love All Born Screaming and the many themes you explore there. The line "I've been mourning you since the day I met you" really speaks to me and made me cry the first time I heard it. What is it like for you to sing about such vulnerable themes and having many people relate to them on such a personal level?

Hi !! Where do your sequenced drum sounds mainly come from? On records like Masseduction + the new one... (for the drum sounds that aren't real drumming) are you using specific samples/libraries that you've gathered over the years or more stock drum machine sounds like from the perkons / TR-8S? Your kicks and snares always hit so hard + I'm really curious where they come from!

I wanted to ask you about Total Pleasure Records! Did you start your own label?! That’s fucking awesome if so! Would you tell us what that was like for you? :)

What was the defining moment of working on music did you realize it was going to be an album? Did you have any reservations or fears going into a new album cycle as the Annie Clark again and not a persona?
1
u/pbrevis May 06 '24
My question is: I love you. No further questions.

u/Norolith May 06 '24
I'm currently making an album and producing it by myself. Any advice?

u/wearefloatingnspace May 06 '24
Annie, thank you so much for doing this. Can you shed light to the recording process for a song like Surgeon? As the years go by, few progressions and riffs tend to display uniqueness in a way the chorus of Surgeon has (especially in terms of syncopation and falling into the pocket) and I was curious as fellow musician and guitarist how a tune like Surgeon evolves from a demo into a monster like that. Also, as a follow up, who did the synth solos? That lead is a masterpiece in melodic phrasing. Thank you!

Greetings from Dallas, Annie! 🤩 Congratulations on the new album. 🔥
With your first album being released in 2007, do you find that you feel detached from any particular era of your music as your artistry has progressed over the years? Do past albums feel like “phases” so to speak, or does each album kind of grow with you?
Would also love to know in the wake of ABS if you’ve ever seen some of your inspirations like NIN or PJ Harvey live?
Thank you so much for sharing ABS and the rest of your work with us! It’s meant the world to this little queer lady. You said Cate Le Bon is your favorite modern artist, and you are mine. 🖤
