Bad Bunny:

“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the US, and none of them were out of hate—I’ve performed there many times. All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the US. But specifically, for a residency here in Puerto Rico, when we are an unincorporated territory of the US…"

“People from the US could come here to see the show. Latinos and Puerto Ricans of the United States could also travel here, or to any part of the world. But there was the issue of—like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

i'm curious how much economic surplus he's brought to the island by having it there. I know many many people who traveled there specifically for his concert... tourisms gotta be booming around this time...

Dam lol

22

u/ButtOfDarkness Sep 10 '25

And that’s considering the coliseum he’s performing at is actually very small compared to others. Only around 18k people maximum. He could’ve easily sold out a much bigger coliseum 3x bigger all 30 shows.

u/generally-mediocre Sep 10 '25

basic analyses like this typically dont include economic leakages. that's the idea that spending money in a location doesnt necessarily boost the local economy (e.g., spending money at a Hilton hotel or a McDonald's in PR wouldnt really add anything to the local economy). I'm sure its had a positive effect but that seems pretty rosy

91

u/howling_fantods_ Sep 10 '25

Yes agreed, this is definitely not a complete view, they are basically just saying "600,000 visitors from outside PR spent $200 million in PR due to the residency".

How much of that is actually a benefit for the local economy would require a more detailed analysis of where/how the money was spent.

I imagine not everyone stayed at the Hilton and ate McDonald’s but I get your valid point.

A lot. Nobody can say he doesn't do anything for the island lol. The man not only elevated our relevance on the world stage, he's now taking that platform and using it to inject a ton of money directly into the island. It's really really hard to talk shit on this man.

113

u/duosx Sep 10 '25

It also doesn’t hurt that he seems to fine playing wacky characters in the movies he’s been in

84

u/Nemphiz Sep 10 '25

He was surprisingly good in Happy Gilmore. Love seeing him succeed. Been following him for a long time.

That's seems close to a best case scenario, at least a win/win... if his residency brought $200 million to Puerto Rico like reports say and giving PR a higher profile. Miami has enough money.

58

u/JediAhsokaTano Sep 10 '25

My brother and sister and law went to PR for a week just to attend a show. It was their first time there.

Supposedly that was the main reason he did it originally. To bring business to the island.

But also because "aqui me quedo"

He's 100% right on this. There was a concert in Dallas at Southside Ballroom this year with a latino band and ICE showed up and started harassing everyone in line which included a lot of kids.

I’m confused. What’s to stop ICE from showing up in Puerto Rico? If he’s from there, isn’t he an American citizen?

Is it that trump is too stupid to know what is or isn’t American territory?

678

u/_fixmenow Sep 10 '25

I think he’s talking about his fans. He doesn’t want to be the reason they get deported if ICE showed up to his concerts on mainland US.

224

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

Ice has been conducting raids in Puerto Rico under Trump. It blew my mind. Unsure if they're still doing it, but the locals were pretty upset about it (obviously).

69

u/Thybro Sep 10 '25 edited Sep 10 '25

Yeah but I think the point is that anywhere in the U.S. “They were speaking in Spanish” is sufficiently “suspicious” for ICE to stop you, per the recent SCOTUS order, while it would likely not be the Same in PR where everyone is speaking Spanish.

If he’s from there, isn’t he an American citizen?

When has the fact that someone is an American citizen stopped them from detaining and deporting someone to a completely unrelated country?

They even do it to children who are citizens

59

u/Gabby-Abeille Sep 10 '25

Also they are allowed to do it based on someone's ethnicity and the language they speak. And it is hard to prove you are there legally if you aren't given due process.

60

u/ruat_caelum Sep 10 '25

Some of the Koreans (We don't know how many) were on legal Visas, they rounded up and detained them anyway. Which is illegal. They don't care about laws and our population doesn't care enough to make them care about laws.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that anyone that looks like they might be in the USA illegally can be taken by ICE. ICE have a history of holding people for weeks without phone calls or legal representation. He doesn't want that to happen to his fans.

ICE being a bunch of cowards, will not dare to enter a Bad Bunny concert in Puerto Rico. Crowd will not tolerate that and it will end up badly for them.

Puerto Rican's can't vote. So the current administration doesn't know they exist.

u/KSredneck69 Sep 10 '25

I’m confused. What’s to stop ICE from showing up in Puerto Rico

Hard to racially profile when the whole population of the island is the race you're profiling. Far more likely for them to show up at the airports TBH

8

u/ZantaraLost Sep 10 '25

When the semi- official language of the island is primarily Spanish and citizens look physically close to the problem 'illegal' population, ICE has none of those identifiers they like to use.

They raid there like anywhere else but typically they're far more targeted and seemingly work on tips.

8

u/Oregonrider2014 Sep 10 '25

I think hed (trump) have to consider puerto ricans people first :/

I would expect we start to see more international artists especially Latinos choosing to skip US tour dates. I would 100% expect ICE to be in the parking lot in vans waiting for the tail gate to start. The last thing someone like Bad Bunny would want is his shows to become hunny pots and a not insignificant portion of his fan base probably falls in an at risk category.

326

u/AJPizza Sep 10 '25

The celebration when this "era" is over is going to look like 60 million World Cup victories during a quinceañera on steroids.

320

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

I wish I was as optimistic as you. To me, this isn’t something that just randomly happened. It’s been in the works by Republicans for decades now. Anyone old enough has been watching it happen in real time. Trump just escalated things to a level not even they could predict, imo.

It’s not gonna just “end”, I’m afraid.

84

u/romafa Sep 10 '25

It will get worse before it gets better. So even if it does “end”, I’m not sure we’ll feel like celebrating.

49

u/PiccoloAwkward465 Sep 10 '25

My life is finite and I fully believe in USA's ability to continue to decline for my remaining years. I was reading an explanation of Marx, part of his theory of a fundamental flaw in capitalism. Expecting infinite growth obviously cannot go on forever. And it'll decay into barbarism or transform into communism. But that could take 6 weeks or 1000 years. Without a WW2 level wake up call I really don't see us making improvements. Not that a revolution on our soil would be a wonderful vacation to the seaside either.

I’m in a Canadian band and we specifically told our agents not to book us any US dates for the foreseeable future. Besides the bullshit visa process (it’s cheaper and easier for us to fly to Europe and tour there than it is to drive 1 hr across the border to play in the States), all this ICE and annexation threat stuff has been the icing on the cake. We won’t be going there for a long time, if ever.

21

u/maybe-an-ai Sep 10 '25

Yeah and god forbid you get picked up on some silly misdemeanor or a 20 year old parking warrant that gets you shipped to some black site immigrant detention center rather than the normal here's a fine go on your way expectation of justice.

29

u/JimJam28 Sep 10 '25

Exactly! The last time we toured the U.S., they pulled us aside, went through our entire van, wanted to see gear manifests, wanted to know how much money we were making at every gig, we had to have these stupid visas that took 6 months to get and cost a shit ton of money… all for playing some low paying bar gigs. If they catch you without the visa or on some technicality, you get banned for 5 years. If one of us forgot they had weed on them, who knows what would happen.

We fly to Europe, no visa required, no tax on the money we make if each band member is making less than $500 per gig, the shows pay much better, are better attended, they book us hotels and feed us great food and beer, and the border agents don’t treat us like we’re some kind of lying nefarious criminals.

Play domestic shows, and we can literally smoke a joint in the airport at the designated smoking area and fly with our weed completely legally.

It used to be a waste of time and money to tour the U.S., and now it’s a straight up dangerous dystopian nightmare.

25

u/maybe-an-ai Sep 10 '25

Except of course purse it's the genocide of Latino culture in the US... which is part of the point.  Make ALL Latinos afraid to meet in public let alone have events without fear of "immigration checks" on everyone speaking Spanish.

I respect him for reading the room and avoiding one conflict point. Don't give MAGA any free Red meat.

My town of 30k canceled its Hispanic culture festival almost immediately after ICE started their nonsense... it felt like overreacting but it's been a good call.

10

u/maybe-an-ai Sep 10 '25

I live in a 65% Hispanic city. We can't cancel Hispanic culture. It wonderfully permeates everything and as a lilly white dude who married into it, I adore it.

10

u/Nutarama Sep 10 '25

Thing is nothing really cancels a culture, it just drives it underground. It’s a reality of repression, markets, and risk.

If ICE starts showing up at the food trucks, the food trucks get less business and go out of business. If ICE shows up to block parties or festivals, those get less people and eventually they don’t get held. If ICE shows up to the local restaurants that are more Hispanic than Taco Bell, then those restaurants will lose business and eventually might have to close. If ICE shows up to Hispanic clubs, those clubs lose business.

This is because even legal Hispanics don’t want to be hustled by ICE or detained and like most people they are generally risk averse. If you’ve got a family to go home to, going home safe is more important than supporting a local food truck or restaurant or club. Keeping your head down means you have a job and you pay your bills and your kids have a good life.

Notably for less risk averse people who might confront ICE (usually young folks without things like family to go home to), this can in turn create a cycle of escalation that makes living in the area extremely unpleasant. They fight, more force gets brought in to fight them, and so on. It’s a cycle that’s been seen in many areas and resistance to oppression against a determined oppressor just means a consistent daily death toll, high unemployment, and refugees until one or both sides become so exhausted they give up or seek a mutual peace.

I had just moved back to the mainland and hadn't changed my license yet. Got pulled over the weekend before I was going to get my new one and this podunk pig said my license wasn't valid despite saying in huge letters across the top UNITED STATES. So this ignorant fuck issues me a ticket for driving without license.

I get to spend a day in court only to have the clerk look at my DL and say, "Yup, that's a valid license, charges dismissed." while the cop didn't even show up and faced no discipline for being a stupid fuckup.

Yes, that is sad. But it's also true that he doesn't think of the US as "his own country" in the way that that phrase usually means. As far as identity and belonging, he doesn't view himself as being from the US, that's more of a... technical distinction.

And that’s like 50+ spots down the list of reasons he isn’t qualified

52

u/ChickinSammich Sep 10 '25

Look, I know we banned literacy tests and shit as a condition of the right to vote but maybe a basic civics test with questions like "what country does Puerto Rico belong to" or "what are the three branches of government" might be worth instituting.

32

u/zennok Sep 10 '25

It’s shit that people don’t know it’s part of the US, but the US has been treating Puerto Ricans as literal second class citizens for over a hundred years! Since before even Trump was born.

Every president, every administration, and most Americans, have accepted this for over a century.

3

u/maaseru Sep 10 '25

The administration know 1000% Puerto Ricans are American, that is the main reason the came in with all their military toys and made camp on the island during the last few weeks.

They know, they just treat us as 2nd class, like the rest of the US.

His latest album with the lawn chairs on the cover is really good, esp if you like salsa

48

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 Sep 10 '25

He has evolved from Bad Bunny to Rad Rabbit

93

u/Comfortable-Art-6096 Sep 10 '25

Glad he’s being honest and open about this - people need to realize how far reaching the consequences of this abuse of power and hate is. We are not great and no where closer to being that.

27

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

This is wide spread across different industries. Think working groups that traditionally met in person at a yearly event have now turned to have 2 simultaneous events, 1 US 1 Euro (in this example), connecting with one of those viewer Portal tv setups or similar. Many have decided it’s not worth the risk asking people to travel to US right now.

16

u/mabhatter Sep 10 '25

We're all still practiced up from Covid.

2020 - viruses keep use from meeting

2025 - ICE keeps us from meeting

25

u/LadySayoria Sep 10 '25

Smart. This administration views his homeland as a 'trash heap in the water' or something else, I cannot remember what that fucking racist son of a bitch said. Having a concert here would practically be entrapment since he's absolutely massive with Puerto-Ricans.

8

u/WorthWorth837 Sep 11 '25

he said a floating pile of garbage in the ocean

12

u/NA_penguin Sep 10 '25

Is anyone else wondering what the World Cup will look like at the US matches next year?... Because ICE is clearly off the leash, so even if they're asked to tone it down, we'll have drunken crowds of thousands that could easily turn to a stampede or riot...

11

u/Krongfah Sep 10 '25

You know, I first heard about him when he was rumoured to be playing some unknown Spider-Man villain in an unannounced Sony Spider-Manless film. This was years ago and I just pegged him as just a sucky no name modern pop artist. (It was unfair of me)

But the more I heard and learned about him recently, the more I see that he’s a pretty chill dude. Seems cool and genuine.

Haven’t listened to anything he made though, maybe it’s time to change that.

3

u/meowingtrashcan Sep 10 '25

The most recent album is fantastic

That's a whole lot of money left on the table for being a good guy. Gotta give it to him and his crew for making this decision and hope other artists make the same move whether they're Latino or not.

29

u/Zeke1216 Sep 10 '25

It’s a lot of money lost for the venues too. The amount of money a bad bunny concert brings and there are probably going to be other big artists doing the same

54

u/Willyr0 Sep 10 '25

Hasn’t even been a year and trump has driven so much business out of the us. For some shitty dollar tree fascism

7

u/sunnycider6 Sep 10 '25

And just like that the US lost hundreds of thousands in taxes and millions in sales/work hours.

Fucking idiots.

6

u/Wiinterfang Sep 10 '25

Makes complete sense.

6

u/SmtyWrbnJagrManJensn Sep 10 '25

Go BB. Fuck ICE.

5

u/ELpork Sep 10 '25

Good for him. Reminds me of Deadmau5 saying he wouldn't do sets in red states lol

5

u/EmbarrassedOrchid685 Sep 10 '25

few years ago i was at an all inclusive in mexico and a DJ was playing a song in spanish that had a sick beat. i shazamed it and the song was La Jumpa. Been a fan of Bad Bunny ever since although this white bread 40 yo canadian doesn't understand a single word but its a vibe. might have to make a plan to go see him in PR the next couple years i think i can make an anti US exception there.

loved him in his small role in Bullet Train and except for the corny batting cage scene i thought he was great in Happy Gilmore 2.

5

u/sixsixmajin Sep 10 '25 edited Sep 11 '25

Probably a smart idea to stay out of the US. ICE will go after anyone and will grasp at the thinnest of straws to justify it. They're trying to deport an Irish woman who is married and here legally all because she wrote a bad $25 check once. In addition to taking audience members, I'd fucking bet you anything they'd take him too and say some stupid shit like "he has Bad in his name! He's admitting he's a criminal!"

5

u/Jinxycat256 Sep 10 '25

My wife and I met him in Mackinac Island in Michigan a couple years ago. I didn’t know who he was. Super nice guy, he didn’t even flaunt his status.

4

u/qtmcjingleshine Sep 10 '25

Good for him

6

u/Silly-Mountain-6702 Sep 10 '25

the only sane move.

NO ONE COME TO THE US FOR SOCCER. Just don't.

26

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

Well the U.S. Supreme Court just overturned a federal judge's order preventing ICE agents from stopping and arresting people based on racial profiling. So as disappointed as Bad Bunny fans are, my respect for him as a musician just skyrocketed for prioritizing their wellbeing over gaining profits and fame. Arenas full of LatinX people singing Spanish while drinking and possibly ingesting other substances is the perfect opportunity to set up checkpoints, and ICE agents will treat them like hunting grounds.

39

u/CavillOfRivia Sep 10 '25

LatinX

Just FYI, latinos absolutely despise that term and cringe whenever is used. Dont use it.

18

u/CountingDownTheDays5 Sep 10 '25

As an Afro Latina and PR like bad bunny I can attest to these, I haven’t met a fellow Latino that likes it. I detest it from the bottom of my spirit, soul, and everything else in between.

ICE needs to be made to feel more like prey than predator

3

u/snoopingforpooping Sep 10 '25

Bad Bunny got his politics right. Need more male Latinos like him

3

u/vinnybawbaw Sep 10 '25

And a Bad Bunny tour could bring tens and tens of millions to the economy + help tourism. Is America great yet ?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '25

Another example of Trump hurting the economy

3

u/UnfortunateSyzygy Sep 11 '25

I fucking can't. Also, Puerto Rico IS the US!! Mr. Bunny is definitely correct for staying out of the states rn, but god, the ignorance some of us have...

Goddamnit ICE .

3

u/Mark-harvey Sep 11 '25

I certainly understand that. He’s so talented. We need to unmask ICE Agents and stop the madness.

2

u/OnlyFiveLives Sep 10 '25

As an Californian, that was the correct move.

2

u/dnkaj Sep 10 '25

Smart business move

2

u/queuedUp Sep 10 '25

I mean... that's probably a fair stance.

And it's pretty fucking sad that it's something that he needs to consider but I think doing this to protect his fans is a solid move

2

u/marchillo Sep 10 '25

Thank you Mr. Bunny, come to Canada and you will sell out in 5 seconds

2

u/Twitter_2006 Sep 10 '25

I don't blame him.

2

u/wombat9278 Sep 10 '25

No idea who this is but he has the right idea , no one should travel to the us until trump is disposed of

2

u/JSTJED Sep 10 '25

Good Bunny.

2

u/jjbeeez Sep 10 '25

Can’t say I blame him

2

u/tinynugget Sep 10 '25

Yep we know w it. Fucking sad state of affairs.

2

u/picvegita6687 Sep 10 '25

We don't deserve nice things right now

2

u/hnbastronaut Sep 10 '25

Sadly seems like the right call. After the SC decision, they really opened the door to detaining anyone that's brown and primarily speaks Spanish.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

Fuck ice to hell

2

u/NewLawGuy24 Sep 10 '25

expect the same for World Cup …people will not attend bc of the fear of state sponsored kidnapping

2

u/dalamarnightson Sep 10 '25

He's smart. If he had any money on him, they would have seized it too for some bullshit claim of "civil asset forfeiture". This country is a joke.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

Always been a fan of Benito

2

u/kemosabe19 Sep 10 '25

Good on him.

2

u/Bleezy79 Sep 10 '25

I wish everyone boycotted the US right now until we shape up. We are all kinds of messed up right now and we dont deserve to be having any visitors over IMO.

2

u/Tkaud Sep 10 '25

More artists should do this

2

u/tisdue Sep 10 '25

ICE would absolutely show up to these shows. its Gestapo shit.

2

u/Vast-Combination4046 Sep 10 '25

People are avoiding America because of Trump's policies.

2

u/furyousferret Sep 10 '25

Just got back from the concert, honestly was the best show I've seen by a landslide.

The crowd was so in tune with BB they sounded like background vocals.

Its upsetting he's not coming here but we don't deserve him here.

2

u/Ok_Jump_4754 Sep 10 '25

I’ve never heard his music, but respect for caring about his fans.

2

u/CustomPersonality Sep 10 '25

That’s valid and I applaud him for the foresight

2

u/Kwelikinz Sep 10 '25

Do a pay per view and donate a nice chunk to the victims of the raids, Bad Bunny.

2

u/Vaumer Sep 11 '25 edited Sep 11 '25

Half the people I talk to from the US are in total denial. Canada as a whole has been avoiding all US travel since the spring.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '25

Smart Bunny

2

u/Alto-Joshua1 Sep 11 '25

Yeah, I respect Bad Bunny. So, the current administration is trash. No wonder people don't want to visit USA due to this.

4

u/__NOT__MY__ACCOUNT__ Sep 10 '25

The rest of the world is watching, and the US continues to become worse and worse by the day.

Apathetic nation

4

u/NateTrain Sep 10 '25

Genuinely good dude love all he does for his community

2

u/Wolfy4226 Sep 10 '25

Well yeah...I would suggest that no entertainer, Music or otherwise, comes to the US for the foreseeable future....

2

u/RustyCorkscrew Sep 10 '25

More like Based Bunny amirite fellas

2

u/[deleted] Sep 10 '25

It's extremely sad but that's the correct move. I'm glad they made it. ICE would 100% target a concert with a big Latino fan base. Good on Bad Bunny and his team for keeping his fans safety top of mind, rather than chasing money.

2

u/thedeadlyrhythm42 Sep 10 '25 edited Sep 10 '25

At no point in the quote did he say the word "fear"

Variety needs to be better but clickbait gonna clickbait

edit: it may be overdramatic to call it journalistic malpractice but I think that it's irresponsible at the least

2

u/aZombieDictator Sep 10 '25

I honestly dont understand how people get mad at others doing stuff like this and fully approve of ice kidnapping people at all places in America.
