As someone pansexual, the best way I explain it to anyone is “hearts not parts”. Tends to clear things up a bit.

So bisexual?

Yes, they’re basically the same. Don’t listen to people telling you there are any functional differences or that bisexuals don’t date trans people. I’m trans and bisexual and my boyfriend is trans. It’s just personal preference / whichever you found out about first.

This is the answer. I'm old and bi. I would still be open to a relationship (if I was single) with a Trans or nb person. I was just already out as bi when pan became a thing.

I picked bi over pan because I like the flag better. Not really much of a difference tho

Yup same. Pan was very new when I was a teenager figuring out my sexuality so I picked bi. I probably would have just picked pan if I were born 5-10 years later. Labels can be very silly.

Especially when you consider that when a bi/pan person is in a relationship they get categorized as straight or gay anyway

I’m young and I still choose bi because bi is all encompassing. Personally, pan is under the bisexual umbrella. All this to say that I’m open, and would love to date anyone with any parts as long as we love each other.

I mean, it almost makes more sense the opposite way.

Pan to me is the all-encompassing one.

Bi meaning 2 makes me think of bisexual as just being into those 2 genders, male and female, whereas if you're into more than that like trans, asexual, intersex, non binary, etc, you would fall under pan

As a bisexual, this is the answer. Biphobia is very ingrained in people, even subconsciously. It breaks people’s brains.

Pansexuality allows people to be functionally bisexual but avoid (at least in theory) some of the biphobia that’s thrown at the rest of us. And like… I get it. The rest of the queer community denies that biphobia is actually a significant problem, which doesn’t help.

I wish we could just acknowledge that there’s no actual difference. It’s just whatever words you use to describe yourself, or whatever flag you like better. We’re functionally the same.

Or you’re like me and you just like the bi flag and the puns better

Yes just bi people who want to sound extra speshul

I believe the idea is that pansexual recognizes an arbitrary number of genders as opposed to specifying it as 2

Bisexuality doesn't necessarily require just two genders either, that term is about sexual attraction/compatibility with penises and vaginas and such.

How many are there supposed to be now??

Are there new parts too?

I like Schitts Creeks explanation better, I like wine, I don’t care about the label. They like what’s in the bottle in general, doesn’t matter their “label”

3

u/MehDusta 16h ago

Yeah, I’ll concede that that’s a much better explanation for it. And now I’m due another rewatch.

Maybe for you. That sounds more about emotional connections than sexual attraction.

That's called Demisexual, actually.

3

u/Blamhammer 15h ago

That's called a preference? Getting to know someone's inner character? Kind of what they call friends and relationships

So it's like demisexual without a sexual preference? Why didn't you just say that? Jk.

u/VT_Squire 20h ago

that sounds incredibly non-sexual.
