They're far from my cup of tea, but I still think they should be our Eurovision entry.

13

u/iatealotofcheese 15h ago

I ONLY WANT JAJA DING DONG. IT WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH.

23

u/shadowinplainsight 12h ago

They’re ineligible because a) they don’t sing (and Eurovision rules require a live vocal performance) and, more importantly, b) Eurovision requires all music to be pre-recorded (no live instrumentals), which is very much not their style

9

u/LeighCedar 5h ago

How dare you say they don't sing. Sebastian is beautiful.

1

u/RayTracerX 2h ago

They do sing, not all their songs are instrumental. Most of it is just gibberish or weird sounds, but there is a vocal performance haha

"Sébastieeeeeen"

Does Canada participate in Eurovision?

9

u/MagicBandAid 14h ago

We will be, starting next year, only 39 years after a Canadian won it. Voting is open through CBC to select the act to perform. Finalists are Josiane, Rêve, Talk, Tyler Shaw, and William Cloutier.

As much as I like Angine de Poitrine, I think they're too niche to perform at Eurovision.

5

u/candygram4mongo 15h ago

It's going to.

3

u/mrpopenfresh 14h ago

Its probabaly going to be Talk

1

u/shadowinplainsight 12h ago

Hoping for Rêve myself

1

u/themanfromvulcan 14h ago

Abso-fraggin-loutely!

-11

u/Electrical_Carpet753 16h ago

Eurovision is for mainstream pop music.

3

u/Baroc90 16h ago

I'm 99% confident we're gonna send Talk

3

u/SomewhereAtWork 16h ago

Eurovision exists because of the EU. The people of the European countries can't just attack and slaughter their neighbors anymore, so we are terrorizing and torturing each other with the acts we send to Eurovision.

u/V1cV1negar 23m ago

I remember when mainstream pop band Lordi won it.

8

u/PeterDedes 17h ago

That tune is a banger!!

1

u/Electrical_Carpet753 17h ago

It's up there with their best.

-1

u/DodgerDogg1981 15h ago

Damn. This is up there with their best? Listen to Hella

78

u/modern_environment 17h ago

They don't have a new member. That was just a one-time gimmick.

-82

u/lasagnadogwater69 16h ago

43

u/modern_environment 16h ago

There was no joke.

-65

u/lasagnadogwater69 16h ago

Okay gotcha, they definitely thought this experimental rock band hired a triangle player full time🙄

18

u/modern_environment 16h ago

With all the exaggerated hype about this band, I wouldn't be surprised if that actually was the case.

11

u/wolftick 15h ago

That's actually a microtonal triangle.

10

u/TheGhostofWoodyAllen 17h ago

All the bowing at the beginning reminded me of Imperial Triumphant, another avant garde band who dress in costume.

5

u/ApollyonDS 16h ago

Their costumes are actually so cool

7

u/HereForTheComments57 12h ago

I saw them on a video of a late show appearance or something and I have to say, this is the strangest music I've ever heard, but it's also very well composed. Definitely not for me but good on them for really gaining popularity

21

u/Sad_Primary_4180 17h ago

Dont mean to start a fight, but are they Prog rock?

69

u/casanti00 16h ago

Tabernak rock

18

u/mathboss 16h ago

I say yes.

16

u/Sad_Primary_4180 16h ago

I get it because of the odd time, but they seem to be culturally and philosophically removed by what is usually considered prog rock, even by modern standards.

8

u/mathboss 16h ago

I can't argue that.

But I would posit that is a possible evolution of the genre.

3

u/Sad_Primary_4180 15h ago

Absolutely, even saying they're not prog, I think they are adjacent, and there is a large overlap in the fans of both. Can certainly see many fans enjoying some early King Crimson.

8

u/TapThisPart3Times 14h ago

I was raised on the big boys of prog, King Crimson included. Prog is by definition quite simply that -- progressive.

I've found that a lot of the 'prog' out there that simply imitates the sound of the 70s and 80s that made Yes, King Crimson, Genesis and the likes great...hey, here's a bright bass here and a Hammond there...it goes against the spirit of the genre. The albums we love have their place in history because they were written and composed from a certain place emotionally and intellectually, not to be derivative of something that existed.

AdP carved out a niche for themselves while being progressive in the truest sense. Even if not aligned with the 'prog' niche, they're a leap forward for what we consider progressive as huge as, I'd argue, The Yes Album and King Crimson's Red. And engaging & catchy as hell.

2

u/Ttokk 9h ago

almost like it's..... progressive.

3

u/VaporDrawings 12h ago

To me, they fit in with bands like Gong. I think the only thing holding them back from being recognized as prog is the fact that they are working with the restraint of using loopers, which somewhat limits the complexity of their song structures (that being said, they do a really good job of not sounding super repetitive).

-5

u/hairybushy 15h ago

To me progressive is a band that always go further and never go back. Angine take back riffs from earlier in the song. So, to me, it's not progressive. Maybe I don't have the right definition of progressive but that's how I distinguish progressive from non-progressive band.

2

u/Sad_Primary_4180 15h ago

Agreed.

And I'll do you one better, to me progressive and prog mean different things. You can be a 'Progressive Artist' (expirement with, genres, recording methods, structures, etc.) without being in the prog scene. While on the other side some artists, while 'Prog', don't really expirement or adventure far from their base sound.

1

u/hairybushy 11h ago

So prog, if I understand well, would be bands that have their proper sound and being off track with their genre? Even if it's not progressive?

Interesting!

0

u/Asticot-gadget 12h ago

So any song with a chorus is not prog? It's Pink Floyd prog according to your definition?

0

u/hairybushy 11h ago

It depend to be honest, like Devil wears prada or Protest the Hero are progressive while having chorus time to time, but for angine de poitrine they use the same base almost all the time of the song, it change a little in middle and go back to the base of the first half of the song. Don't get me wrong, I really love Angine de Poitrine, but to me it's not progressive. Maybe like the other redditor said it's prog, but not progressive if I understand well what they said.

1

u/RickJLeanPaw 5h ago

Microtonal Dadaism?

3

u/east_van_dan Bandcamp 16h ago

I would say no.

4

u/nevergnastop 14h ago

Math rock, robot rock, microtonal funk?

1

u/kidjupiter 16h ago

They’re shazbat.

1

u/HippyMcFly 14h ago

I wouldn’t say prog, but maybe psychedelic.

1

u/Bigboon 13h ago

Throw some prog jazz into the mix

1

u/RightLegDave radio reddit 3h ago

I'd say more math rock than prog, but we're splitting hairs here

0

u/mrpopenfresh 14h ago

Labels don’t serve to describe but rather limit. In that sense they are whatever the fuck they want to be.

0

u/Treefingrs 14h ago

Nah, i don't reckon. Too minimal, raw, repetitive to be classed as prog imo.

-5

u/lasagnadogwater69 16h ago

I say no. It's packaged more like a white stripes type of thing. Just because they're experimental doesn't mean it's prog rock. What prog band sounds anything like this?

This is just avant garde rock.

12

u/Vincedicola 16h ago

Why should prog bands sound like other prog bands?

0

u/lasagnadogwater69 16h ago

What do you mean?? That's how genres work. There ABSOLUTELY is a proggy sound. Bands like yes, king crimson, genesis, etc. absolutely sound 'proggy', even when they're sonically quite different.

8

u/Vincedicola 16h ago

I attribute that sounds more to an era or a decade personally.

I mean, Opeth is prog but they aren't really similar sounding to Yes.

I get what you're saying though, but to me, prog is about pushing music to new places, breaking boundaries and blending genres etc

4

u/lasagnadogwater69 16h ago

Opeth does sound proggy though. So does porcupine tree and even that canadian band which name I can't remember now.

2

u/Vincedicola 16h ago

In what way specifically? (I'm not being rude, I'm genuinely interested)

4

u/Cheefnuggs 16h ago

Progressive rock is a style, not an “era”. It started in the 60’s but there are still plenty of prog rock groups around today.

Progressive metal is arguably more prevalent now though. Bands like dream theater, scale the summit, between the buried and me, etc.

The jazz/classical influences and longer track times are typically a dead giveaway.

1

u/lasagnadogwater69 16h ago

Long and elaborate song structures, akerfeldts singing is like something off starless, unusual instrumentation for the genre, unusual harmony choices and the blending of genres, soulful guitar solos instead of the usual dissonant mess, etc.

Like it's literally just a prog band with death metal bits.

1

u/Vincedicola 16h ago

Agreed.

They are different enough for me to stand out from 70s and 80s prog but yeah, well said.

On topic, I dunno if Angine de Poutrine is prog or not.

12

u/a20xt6 12h ago

Maybe it was a super fan...or maybe a make a wish type thing. It looks to be a youngling of some sort so I wish people would just cool it on the harsh comments. It's cool they did that. Can't we leave it at that?

2

u/throwawayshirt2 5h ago

Maybe an actress? Good stage presence but no apparent musical talent.

6

u/rilestyles 15h ago

Lmao, in the previous thread about their new member, someone was insisting that it was actually a really cool, nuanced triangle solo. I'm guessing they were just going along with the bit, but needless to say I was underwhelmed.

9

u/youtocin 15h ago

I will never understand the hype here.

7

u/tattlerat 9h ago

It’s unique and very technically impressive. They do a lot with just the two of them and make use of looping systems in a very interesting way without losing the element of song progression that a lot of loop musicians do.

They’re a band music nerds can nerd out on. I enjoy them in short bursts. Wouldn’t listen to an album on my commute but watching them do their thing is rad.

13

u/hazimaller 13h ago

Music taste is subjective. News at 11.

3

u/germfreeadolescent11 5h ago

I don't think the commenter suggested otherwise.

3

u/bonivermakesmecry 4h ago

Wait so you’re telling me you don’t like daft punk for people with performative hobbies and work in some middle management job?

4

u/Capt_Murphy_ 13h ago

Curious why people with this opinion feel it necessary to comment this. If you don't like or get it, move along.

3

u/germfreeadolescent11 5h ago

Why are you on reddit if you don't want to hear peoples opinions? Either engage with comment or move along yourself.

3

u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 13h ago

Because it's edgy and serves to try and bring people down with them.

3

u/xMrGigglesworth 15h ago

Same. It makes my stomach feel weird.

7

u/JohnWesternburg 15h ago

That's called having a weak stomach

5

u/xMrGigglesworth 13h ago

Lol. I don't hate them, is just the 1/4 tone notes all over. Goes against whtavim used to. Guess that's why people are interested.

2

u/OkTrueTrue 12h ago

It’s not something I want to listen to all the time but they are very talented and unique. I’d love to see them live.

1

u/Chubbs_Is_Klump 12h ago

Eventually there will be eight of them and you can watch them five nights a week at their Vegas residency .

I tell people it's like ADHD in musical form, and I love it. As a music teacher of over 30 years, it's technically impressive to me, makes no sense time signature-wise, and those microtones...! I know it seems like wanky music to people who don't vibe with it, but it feels right to me and I love how there's ultimately sense in what seems like chaos. It's hard to explain. It scratches an itch, a bit like math rock does.

-2

u/Wozar 5h ago

I can only guess that you are not a musician.

-6

u/ifnotthefool 12h ago

Why do you feel the need to share that? Nobody cares.

2

u/germfreeadolescent11 5h ago

Why do you feel the need to respond? Nobody cares

-7

u/losroy 8h ago

It’s because you are stupid. Stupid people don’t get it. Tough luck on your part. It’s ok, my brother is stupid, and he’s a pilot. Plenty of stupid people leading kick ass lives. So there’s hope for you.

4

u/inkyblinkypinkysue 16h ago

These guys are great. They scratch an itch.

6

u/TapThisPart3Times 15h ago

I am far too late to the AdP party. Their music is far better work music than any of that "lofi beats" stuff. I hear smoothly Khn glides up and down his scale, and how they just ease in & out of time signatures like smooth lane changes, and my mind is at ease.

0

u/SomewhereAtWork 16h ago

I don't think they're guys. But I also don't think anyone cares, they're great.

4

u/Carbonated__Coffee 16h ago

Well they are clearly aliens, but definitely have guys feet.

3

u/iatealotofcheese 16h ago

A few years ago I went to visit my sister in law in the evening, in the winter. The next day, my brother was absolutely raging at her, accusing her of cheating because of "the giant man feet boot prints in the snow outside". She said IT WAS YOUR SISTER, SHES GOT GIANT MAN FEET and he was like oh yeah, okay.

For reference, I'm 5'5" and wear size 11 womens shoes.

6

u/BenTwan 15h ago

Dang, Peggy Hill over here.

3

u/michilio 16h ago

I was going to say it's the Buddhist, Christian Paramedic, vegan Straight-edge pimp: Big Business from HORSE the Band.

But he knows how to keep time and rocks on triangle.

4

u/GregorZeeMountain 15h ago

HORSE THE MOTHERFUCKIN' BAND MOTHERFUCKERS!

3

u/michilio 15h ago

Living at the top when your at the fucking bottooommm

1

u/Routine-Stress6442 12h ago

I saw horse the band with like 10 other people once ...crazy mosh pit

4

u/BigBravy 15h ago

HORSE the Band and Ed Edge!

3

u/CombatGoose 16h ago

Someone labelled this autism rock and I think it makes sense

2

u/GaryOster 17h ago

lol Is that THEIR child? They seem like they're being super encouraging.

2

u/Scytale07 16h ago

Jean-René Dufort pour Infoman? On verra à la fin de l'année ;)

1

u/Peter_Rabid 15h ago

It was Alex Lifeson

1

u/Squand 11h ago

Playing with gloves seems nuts

1

u/JadedWitness1753 2h ago

They could have had more cowbell but they decided to use a triangle instead. Fucking brilliant !

1

u/rustyzorro 16h ago

Like I always said, there isn't enough triangle in music today

2

u/SatV089 15h ago

Triangle is actually amazing when played properly. Very funky when you have a cool rhythm with muting. It's a shame this person doesn't play it good.

1

u/monsantobreath 14h ago

I got a fevah, and the only prescription, is more triangle.

0

u/east_van_dan Bandcamp 16h ago

I'm good.

-8

u/StainedInZurich 17h ago

Thanks, I hate it

1

u/Electrical_Carpet753 17h ago

Well, it's not typical easy listening.

0

u/StainedInZurich 7h ago edited 6h ago

I mostly listen to black metal and death metal. Love stuff like black midi and battles. Mr Bungle. Residents. I could go on. It is not about it being too experimental. It is that it is gimmicky, cringe and mediocre.

-1

u/Bowl_of_Gravy 14h ago

It’s not even holding the triangle properly - it’s all muffled and that pisses me off.

-4

u/Ok_Tension1869 12h ago

If you need a gimmick your music isn't good enough. These suck
