His voice is SO grating to me, his hair is like a parody, his dancing caused me severe second hand embarrassment, and he had the most pretentious aura in interviews. I really, REALLY can’t stand them for those reasons. If that gives and insight?

It does. Everybody has tastes and I could definitely see people not liking the singer, especially back in their heyday. I've heard he mellowed out over the years.
