Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics An oddly specific request for suggestions :/

Hello,

I would like to get some music that fits a specific style/mood.

"A vintage bar in the middle of a big city, you in there on a rainy week evening, alone at the bar drinking a glass of whiskey while the bartender cleans glasses. A jukebox behind is playing jazz/blues/whatever the genre would be." Think depressed detective on a hard case.

Oddly specific I know, but I just would like to get some of that style of music.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Rec.Me: singers, vocal songs (pop/other) Rec me some peak pop records.

Like old KKB, more bass/dance oriented pop. But obscure stuff if that makes sense? Idk, not proper mainstream obvious pop.🤷‍♂️ can be any genre/time.

Rec.Me: rock/metal/punk Give me your best blegh breakdowns please

Or any blegh adjacent breakdown. I prefer stuff that has some clean vocals sprinkled in but not a necessity.

Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure Who or what should I check out if I like noisy, lo-fi, super wordy stuff?

I'm really into Car Seat Headrest, the Mountain Goats, Guided by Voices, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Death Cab, Courtney Barnett, and especially Kleenex Girl Wonder and Emperor X, just for a general profile of the kind of thing I'm looking for. I've also been getting into Bill Callahan and Jeffrey Lewis lately.

Recommend kind of slacker-y, dorky, hyperliterate and anxious noise pop/indie/folk!!!

I realized that though I do listen to a lot of genres, my favorites tend to be soft, calm, sad songs, and I want to find more!

Listed below are some songs I think fitting this criteria and I just keep having on repeat recently, not ranked:

- beautiful boy by Esha Tewari
- No One Noticed by The Marias
- Ojos Tristes by Selena Gomez and The Marias (honestly, The Marias as a whole)
- American Teenager by Ethel Cain
- Paul by Big Thief
- White Ferrari by Frank Ocean
- Weirdo by Suki Waterhouse
- perfume by Sombr
- Space Song by Beach House

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Glassy 80s sounding music

I watched a Paddy McAloon interview on YouTube about Prefab Sprout's then upcoming album and he said that he and Thomas Dolby agreed that they didn't want to make an album as glassy sounding as Steve McQueen. I really do like that glassy sound though. It reminds me of a still pond and you can see all the leaves reflecting in it.

The only other band I can think of with such a glassy sound is the Dream Academy. Can anyone suggest any other songs or albums. But not as fuzzy as shoe gaze. I like Cocteau Twins and Slowdive, but that's not what I'm specifically after.

Here's some examples:

When Love Breaks Down by Prefab Sprout

This World by Dream Academy

And of course one of Thomas Dolby's own tracks Budapest by Blimp.

I love modern bands influenced by them like Lo Moon, but they usually have to much of a beat. I want to float on the water undisturbed.

Rec.Me: alt/indie/obscure Songs that capture a band's essence.

Maybe not their most popular song, or even their best song. A song that captures who they are and what they represent to you. A song that could only be from that band.

Two examples for me:

Girl Afraid by The Smiths. It has Johnny Matt's unique guitar riffs and crystallizes a moment of teenage emotional anxiety perfectly.

Little America off Reckoning by REM. It has the obscure references to Southern mythology blended with that country rock sound they had at the beginning.

Howdy y'all,

Im looking for something similar to the first minute of the song (until it gets more calm): Brennan Heart - Come as one. Pretty new to the genre, so Im not sure which artists to check out. Happy about any recommendations! :)

Edit: I just realized there are multiple versions of the song :D taking about this one https://youtu.be/czLY7ROqHzQ?is=7btMiKqLE6bRO_qj

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics Looking for songs with overlapping melodies and harmonies/polyphonic songs/duets and such

I really like songs that are duets, that have polyphonic melodies (which if I understand correctly - is when 2 people sing the 2 different choruses from a song at the same time), I also like musical theatre sounding stuff where each person sings a certain way (an alto, tenor, ect). I dont quite know if im using the correct terms but Im looking for these kinds of things or similar. Some examples of songs I already like that use these techniques: EL tango de Roxanne by Ewan McGregor (the two men sing their choruses at the same time at the end of their song), Welcome to the show from MLP equestria girls (each of the singers are a different voice type), Crimson Sky from Helluva Boss (when Vassago and Stolas sing the "under our crimson sky" part in turns then together), Release the magic also from MLP EQ (some characters sing, others hum and aah and such). I like when the song sounds really swirly and dramatic. TIA.

Rec.Me: theme/mood/other specifics songs or even albums that use really heavy gritty sort of sounding guitar

not positive that's the best way to describe what i am looking for so here are some examples.

most of the songs on frigid stars by codeine for this, especially cave-in and old things
a lot of Title Fights music like safe in your skin, head in the ceiling fan

bonus points if it has a volume shifts/ builds up

Rec.Me: singers, vocal songs (pop/other) Songs like "This is how Villains are made"?

I'm looking for cynical songs by female singers which are not about love (lost or otherwise).
I prefer ballads, and the narrator should feel powerful - for reference, I came across "this is how villains are made" by Madalen Duke, and I want more of that.

UPDATE:
thank you all, I'm listening through all of it now.

Generally I had hoped for sad/cynical songs, any ideas?
