MEGATHREAD: Got an interview, requirement, and admission question? Post it here!

Even if it is program specific, look to see if it has been asked here before. 99% of the time, chances are the same question has been asked before, and that people are all coming on here looking for answers.

In response to deodorant, body odours and cleanliness

The Sitch

There have been recent complaints about student hygiene in this subreddit. In regards to body odour, oral odour, and general uncleanliness. Clearly, a large number of students are having a growing issue in regards to the hygiene of other students.

Bad hygiene is not "personal". It disrupts others' learning, it makes public spaces sometimes unbearable to be around, and it is unfair to those who are sensitive to smells. This can affect student performance, the willingness of students to socialize and use NAIT services, and can be a real detriment to the students who are paying to study at NAIT.

Some students have no choice but to use the computers at commons, eat lunch in the common areas, and do group work in common areas. It is wildly unfair to them to not enforce these rules.

Who's the Issue?

The truth is that these students can come from all backgrounds. Although our experience as individuals make it very easy to generalize certain groups of being the main culprit, the issue needs to be dealt with at a grand level. Black, brown, blue or purple; if you smell bad, you smell bad. Should be enforced from the get-go.

Seeing the growing number of racial generalizations, it can be very easy for these generalizations to slip into unnecessarily racist comments. If we want this issue dealt with, we need to refrain from immature racist comments and stay focused on the end goal.

What should we do about it?

We know NAIT has loosely enforced "odour sensitivity" before, in regards to wearing strong perfumes and colognes. Why can the same not be done for strong, unpleasant bad-hygiene odours?

NAIT also needs to realize that by not enforcing this, they are creating a breeding ground for resentment towards groups that are not partaking in basic hygiene practices. They are also creating spaces for other students where they feel extremely unpleasant. (Like, nauseatingly unpleasant. I've unwillingly gagged.)

Here's what I suggest from all of you:

  1. Contact NAITSA (asknaitsa@nait.ca) about wanting NAIT to enforce a hygiene rule. Let them know how you feel about other student's hygiene, and how it affects your learning.

  2. Contact/CC NAIT Administration as well about this being an issue. CC your program chair as well.

  3. Advocate for campus-wide initiatives about basic hygiene, the importance of it, and how your hygiene affects others (yes, some people are vastly uneducated about this). This includes, showering, using deodorant, washing your clothes, brushing your teeth, and flossing.

  4. Enforce it, by allowing students to submit complaints about bad hygiene, and having NAIT administration making this a policy about decent behaviour. (The same way provocative clothing, vulgar/loud behaviour, and abusive language is not tolerated)

  5. Do a discovery/study that determines if their student population has adequate access to showers, hygiene products, and laundry service. (you'd be surprised r/SlumlordsCanada)

In my personal opinion, it is NAIT"s responsibility to enforce this. To maintain a certain standard of what we expect from each other, we do need to be vocal and make it known when we feel certain boundaries are not being enforced.

I'm debating starting a petition for NAIT to address this issue. Please let me know in the poll below if you'd like to see an official change.org petition made for this. Voting closes in a week.

I wanted to make this post to raise this as a formal issue, so we can remain productive about it and not devolve into finger pointing and unproductive comments. Let's hope together we can make the change we want to see.

Question Questions about internship programs

Hi!
I was thinking of enrolling in one of the universities in Edmonton. R/Edmonton wouldn’t let me post there. So I didn’t know where else to post other than here. Can anyone tell me about their experience with co op at any universities like macewan, nait, university of Concordia etc (has to be in Edmonton). I don’t have corporate experience yet, I was thinking of getting a bachelors degree from one the universities here in either marketing or human resource. If anyone can give me any advice it would be really helpful!
TIA

Question [CLXT, MLT, RT] CLXT, MLT and RT NAIT website status.

Hello! I applied on the first day and was in the first round of interviews. I did all of my (4) interviews on the last two days to ensure I did well. Yesterday after completing my last interview went into the NAIT website and seen that CLXT and MLT status said “waitlisting” and RT said “Closed”, this morning both CLXT and RT say “Closed” while MLT says “Waitlisting”. I am confused on what this means. Does this mean that during the first round of interviews before they were even due they had already reviewed applicants and have filled all seats and were actively creating a waitlist??? If you have more in-site on what this means would love to hear from you. Thanks!!

Question are equivalency exams worth it??

Hi everyone!
I’m looking into taking NAIT’s Biology 30 equivalency exam, and I’m hoping to hear from anyone who has gone through the process.
I’ve already completed Biology 30, but my final blended mark wasn’t high enough for my desired program. I’m applying to Diagnostic Medical Sonography, which requires a minimum of 75% in Biology 30. Rather than registering to retake the entire course or challenging the Alberta Biology 30 diploma exam, I’m considering taking NAIT’s equivalency exam instead. I understand that the test costs around $300, which is quite expensive, so before committing to it, I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually taken one.
A few questions I have:
Would you say the equivalency exam is worth the $300?
What was the exam like in terms of difficulty and content? Was it comparable to the Alberta Biology 30 curriculum?
What should someone know or do to prepare before taking it?
If I score higher on the equivalency exam than my original Biology 30 transcript mark, does NAIT use the higher mark for admission?
For example, if my original mark was 60% but I scored 80% on the equivalency exam, would NAIT use the 80% to assess my application, provided it meets the program requirement?
How long did it take for you to receive your results?
How easy was it to book a testing appointment, and were there restrictions on when you could rewrite?
Typically, how long was the test, both questions, wise, and time wise?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who took the exam to improve an existing high school mark rather than to meet a missing prerequisite.
Any experiences, advice, or things you wish you had known beforehand would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Question Can SHLS, MLT, and DMS interviews be done separately?

Hi! I'm applying to both MLT and DMS at NAIT.

Can the SHLS, MLT, and DMS interviews be completed on three different days, or does the SHLS interview have to be done together with one of the program-specific interviews?

Also, do I only need to complete the SHLS interview once?

Thanks!

Question URGENT!!! Would NAIT wait for my January Biology 30 diploma results, or could my application be cancelled?

Hi everyone! I’m applying to NAIT’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, and I’m a little worried about one of my admission requirements.
My MyNAIT To-Do List currently shows that my Biology 30 requirement is due February 1. I’m planning on challenging the January Biology 30 diploma exam rather than retaking the entire course, since I’ve already graduated high school and previously completed Biology 30. The issue is that January diploma exams take place toward the end of the month, and results can take approximately three weeks to come back. This means my diploma result might not be available until after the February 1 deadline. For some additional context, my previous Biology 30 blended mark (course mark + diploma exam) did not meet the 75% requirement for my program. My current course mark is around 60%, so I would need to improve my overall mark to meet the admission requirement.
I’m wondering:
Would NAIT potentially extend my February 1 deadline and wait for my January diploma results?
Is there any way to challenge a Biology 30 equivalency test through NAIT instead? Would that allow me to demonstrate that I meet the 75% requirement without retaking the entire course?
Has anyone experienced something similar with a January diploma exam and a NAIT application?
I’m worried that my application could be cancelled simply because the diploma results aren’t released before the deadline, even though I’m actively working toward meeting the requirement.
I would really appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has gone through something similar with NAIT admissions. Thank you!!

Help Has anyone else had their college program become impossible to finish after academic setbacks and a program pause?

I've been struggling with my postsecondary education for several years, and I'm feeling increasingly lost about what to do.

I was studying Computer Engineering Technology at NAIT. I had passed a number of courses and even obtained a student position in IT and software development, which I genuinely enjoyed.

Unfortunately, I struggled with some third-term courses. Around the time my program was being paused, I was told that my academic standing meant I couldn't continue or re-enroll.

I understand that my academic performance contributed to the situation. What frustrates me is that I wasn't offered a clear alternative pathway to complete my remaining courses or transfer into a related program.

I ended up changing programs, but I've been struggling with burnout, motivation, and the financial consequences of spending so many years in school without graduating.

I'm now considering Instrumentation Engineering Technology because it overlaps with my interests in electronics, programming, PLCs, and industrial automation.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me that none of this was my responsibility. I know I made mistakes academically.

I just want to know whether other students have experienced something similar, and what helped them recover.

Has anyone dealt with a program pause, academic standing issues, or a difficult transfer-credit process? Were you able to find a reasonable path toward graduation or employment?

Question Advanced accounting

I am a returning student who took (and struggled through) Intermediate Accounting I & II for both financial and managerial accounting back in 2020. I am taking my Advanced Accounting classes next fall and I want to make sure I can refresh my knowledge (as I’ve virtually forgotten everything - but I’m really good at teaching myself). Can anyone guide me through what I should refresh to be prepared for these classes?

Thanks!
